Any reason why I shouldn't buy a Sinn 6000?

It has all the features I want.

Date, multiple time zones, chronograph, under 40mm.

Price is around $3700. Is that fair for the number of features and quality?
>>
I plan to get my first rep. Does this look okay to you guys?
>>
>>55868136
if you can afford it, i say go for it. that piece looks really nice

Only if you wanted to give up the time zone and go with a 38mm el primero with the sweet 36,000 goodness.
>>
>>55868136
Well it's definitely high quality. If you have the money then go for it, I think that one is pretty fucking hot.
>>
>>55868285
Reps are gay and it'll break within the first few months

Just buy a cheapo automatic like a Seiko 5. If you like the Submariner so much buy an Invicta or something.

I own the 38mm El Primero that came out in 2012, and the Sinn 6000 was the other watch I was considering because I wanted an under 40mm chronograph. Now that I've had it a couple of years I kinda wish I had gone with the Sinn. The Omega FOIS is another under 40mm chrono if you don't mind a manual wind watch. It's cheaper than the Sinn too.

Funny how the AR coating goes from worst to best (steinhart<seiko<breitling)

Kinda miss my skx though.

>>55869410

Took about two weeks to get there, so it was pretty slow. Other than that the build is good, rather accurate but less so than my sdgm seiko or breitling (which is the most accurate). Other than the ceramic bezel being of poor quality (visibility at certain angles) I'm pretty content with it and it gets the most wear out of all 3 watches (mostly cause I don't want to damage the breitling as I'm working with a lot of pc components that could easily scratch it).
>>
Could anyone with smaller wrists, show me how a skx 007/009 looks on your wrist?

A Patek Phillipe Aquanaut is the most affordable automatic in their whole catalogue, and as a steel sports watch can easily be your every day wear. Good for a bit of stealth luxury, as it doesn't scream Patek at everyone who happens to glance at your wrist.

Or just get a Seiko 5.

It's so shit I can't gauge it, like I'll wind it up, it'll go fine for a bit while I keep an eye on it, I'll go out, come back and it would of stopped

Mainspring is a cunt of a job as well isn't it? Like doing a head gasket car yeah?
>>
Why does no one discuss about black watches?
>>
>>55880347
I suppose that depends on your perspective.

I don't think there is generally such an involved root cause discovery process in the mainspring broken like the head gasket. Like with a head gasket you have to check both the block and the head because one of the two now probably has something wrong with it that needs to be fixed before you put a new gasket on or that one will also get fucked the same way. By comparison a broken spring doesn't mean a problem barrel afaik

Having done both, I can tell you that a mainspring is significantly easier to replace. On good movements, you can remove just the barrel bridge and tilt the barrel out without disturbing much else. Difficulty is going to come in after that. If you have a brand new barrel and mainspring to drop in, awesome. If you want to open the barrel and replace just the mainspring, that gets a bit more difficult. You're going to need to figure out a way to wind the mainspring back in to the barrel, as well as a way to close the barrel.

I didn't do geneva stripes on mine, just a straight grain finish. Wasn't very difficult, just held the bridges on a mainplate in a movement holder and held the movement holder against a straight piece of wood. Simple but effective.

The actual quality of the watches are good. It's just some people take issue with their sometimes boarding on exact copy homaging.
>>

Having a triple date is just an uncommon complication. The time when they're truly useful is with an annual or perpetual calendar. Assuming the watch is just a triple date, you still have the correct it every time a month has less than 31 days. They're not the most complex complication out there, but they just require a lot of room under the dial. They're also commonly paired with a moon phase indicator, which doesn't help keep things cheap.

>>55883599
Pic related, originally just a cheap Chinese 6497 watch. I'd love to get some more quality parts for it some day, but that can wait.

>>55883628
It happens, and thank you. One of my classmates tried geneva stripes, but I don't have any pictures of his work. He used a small table top mill and a wood disc with abrasive on it. It worked pretty well, but wasn't as consistent as we would have liked.

Like I just said to the other Anon, small ladies calibers. They're super cheap, super simple, and you'll learn a lot very quickly servicing something so small. Dial is too dark for the hands. Need something cream/off-white, look at just about any WW2 era watch for an example of how those hands wear, they just about all used a similar style.

Generally squared-off letters and dial features or a solid typeface would warrant the use of something of a similar style regarding the hands.

For the case you pictured, I would honestly recommend going somewhat plain and simple. Batons may even be too messy on the dial in my opinion,

Oh dear lord I didn't enough notice the mix of Arabic, Roman, and Batons, holy shit. That's awful.
It's abstract and interesting to look at, but awful. Like modern art if you would.

The case is a difficult call, it's very plain, but full of features and potential. The crown being at the 4'o'clock position, and nearly hidden by that case is already going to add a certain measure of interest in the watch.
See if you can't find the same case, but polished, no doubt you can find a cream dial to your liking that will fit a Seiko 5, no necessarily made to mod a seiko 5, but fits out of coincidence.

You've just posted one there now that is the embodiment of what I mean when I said

>Generally squared-off letters and dial features or a solid typeface would warrant the use of something of a similar style regarding the hands.

The numbering if soft and rounded, and the hands reflect this and follow suit.

>If you have time, could you show me dial/hands combinations with work together?
This has already been done in the form of watches on the retail market, most of the time anyway.

If you're looking for inspiration more than anything, than I can only suggest what I think would be interesting more than anything;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Seiko-Custom-Pilot-Big-Numbers-28-5mm-Sterile-Dial-/291821998051

Perhaps the linked dial, along with the case you have pictured, the hands elude me however, the lettering being soft in finish, but the presence of batons does throw a spanner in the works as to the style of hands to go for.

The hands have more of a dress feel than a sporty one to me (Please, let's not get caught up on the distinction, you niggers know exactly what I mean) but I think they'll work, not sold on the second hand however, you'd probably be best trying the one that comes with the SNZH55 and seeing how it looks, and again with the one pictured. Should look relatively good though, nice and clean, neat edges to boot. Though I'm not sure how the hands will work with the case finish. As of stock, the hands and case are quite heavily polished, the hands pictured seem more grainy. though it could well be a trick of the light.

Should you not have the means, I have no doubt a watch maker wouldn't mind giving it a once over to clear the finish away, be that by acid bath or whatever means they see fit. Though the hands would need to receive the same treatment and/or refinish in order to look natural.
>>
>>55886796
I'll probably just get the case refinished to match the hands or get somewhat close. There's a few watchmakers near me but the closest one charges a shit load for battery changes and resizing so it'll be bit of a journey to go on, but I think it'd be worth it.

I would like to know how many seconds a good quality quartz watch looses in 6 months. Have any of you ever tried to count that?

I think my Hamilton lost 1 or 2 but I don't think quartz loses time that often unless the movement is fucked or shitty.

HAQ is like 15 a year

I preordered one too earlier this year, it was nice to get $20 back because they lowered the price. Even if it's shit I'm not going to be upset for how cheap it is.

I'm curious as to what they will use as an adhesive for it.

I fully expect that shit to fail and slide off/fall out.

Would you buy a watch like this on Ebay? Advertised as 40's vintage. Something this old in this condition seems too good to be true. Google yields too many variations to compare if everything is original. A pic of the case back was provided which shows it being completely devoid of markings which is odd.
How does one buy vintage watches where the specific model is not commonly sought after and researched?

It's a hard restoration at best. It's mercilessly polished and I'm sure the crystal is not original. The hands doesn't look right either. I myself would not buy it.

I know most anons prefer buying online, but I would advise you to try to hunt for watches in real stores, specially if you're after something slightly uncommon like vintage pieces.

I just recently bought a few more pieces for my vintage collection and let me tell you: there is nothing like visiting an antique watch dealer shop irl.

Cheers!

Disagree
I like the case shape of the turtle way more than the SKX007/9.
>>
>>55888067
I like both. I wish that they made a smaller turtle reissue, around the size of the skx013. And I wish that I could get a skx013 with hacking, handwinding, and a domed acrylic crystal.

You're both right in the sense that it helped me correctly value the watch. It was more of a question about the quality of that watch (i.e. adequately refurbished but not great), and how to buy more obscure vintage watch in general. I wasn't actually planning to buy a >$200 watch at the moment since I've already bought 5 watches this year, but while looking for a cheap but nice gift for my gf and dad, this one caught my eye and made me wonder about how much I'd be willing to pay for it if I'm looking for something like that right now (probably <$200).

Trawled through my local watch forums and found a couple decent vintage watches and I kind of want to bite:

$360 for a 1975 King Seiko 5626-8001 (35mm) or
$320 for a 1962 Seamaster (34mm) ?

>>
>>55892137

Sure, that is nice, but the prices are 2x - 3x as much in those kinds of stores than you can find online.

For myself, finding a great value on a vintage piece is part of the fun, so I prefer to hunt online. Of course, doing so effectively means you need to educate yourself well enough to spot the more original examples.

To each their own though.
>>
>>55894016

You should do some research into the Seiko 56xx movement before deciding whether it is a good idea. The quick-set mechanism the day and date as a plastic gear that tends to eventually crack due to age (not wear, pure ageing) and it is already impossible to get replacements. If and when it inevitably breaks on that KS you will have to set day and date without the benefit of a quick-set.

For this reason, it is best to get a the n day or date version of the 56xx KS if you find one. Otherwise, stick to the 52xx KS as the 52xx does not have a known Achilles heel.

>>55895085
>>55896268

Very helpful you too are, sure, just don't warn him about the quick-set issue with the 56xx.
>>
>>55896779
Setting a date is already bad enough without a quickset. Setting a day/date... x_x

>I would advise you to try to hunt for watches in real stores
I sure love paying from 50 to 100% more and have to deal with people/vendors.
Not everyone has money and time to waste.

But obviously if you want to be 100% sure to get something good you have to pay more.
What about forums, though? Wouldn't it be better than both eBay and real stores for vintage?
>>55893386

Plus white nomos's don't really stand out much anyway to normies.
Get a good fake rolex to impress normies.
