Here in Japan there are many stores to buy old electronics.
Is there a similar chain store in America? I am going to NYC soon and I want an old Thinkpad to run Open BSD on. I know of Goodwill, but I don't trust it. The people there are mostly black and they don't understand how electronics work.
Just buy one from ebay.
Craigslist
Also NYC is horrible
Even by American standards
Have fun!

Isn't Craigslist notorious for rip offs?

Yeah you can get ripped off in Craigslist, but there's still a lot of legitimate users because it's a good service.

I would strongly advise against craigslist OP. Yes, there are many legitimate users - snd there are many bad ones too.
I've also noticed that when I browse through craigslist, the items in the photos seem to be much more filthier than they are on ebay. While cragslist can help you find rarer or niche items such as older thinkpads, crt monitors, etc, ebay makes the whole process easier.
Your call OP, but in a major city like NYC, I wouldn't want to take the risk of flipping the craigslist coin.
Newegg also sells old thinkpads and refurb electronics, but they tend to be priced more than they should be so I rarely use them.
Fry's and Tigerdirect I've never used either because ebay has always met my needs.
