If I downgrade to Win 8.1, how easy is it to upgrade again in the future?
As long as you upgraded before the free offer ended (or after with accessibility stuff turned on) then you can upgrade to a valid Win10 install whenever.
When you "upgrade", MS will remember your hardware so there'll be no problems in future activations. You also already own the license so you can use your W8.1 license key to activate W10 if something goes wrong (if you change hardware, for example).

Thanks guys. I'm on 10 now and have another week or two to go before the downgrade option expires so I'm trying to decide whether it's safe to go back while there's time. All that tracking stuff scares me...

Your W8.1 license is still valid, you can do a clean install of W8.1 after the rollback option "expires".

True, but I think I've seen just about all the best "features" W10 has to offer and the downgrade option seems quicker. I hope it W10 gets better with time (especially in the privacy/data-mining departments) but I'm not sure it's worth waiting around for it to happen.
Okay, so I downloaded the Windows 10 ISO. That should be enough to make the upgrade again later, correct?

pretty sure you have to install, activate and roll back

Easy.
GNU+Linux will remain free in the foreseeable future.

I've done so and it's activated. Just haven't initiated the roll back yet. Anyone have experience with this? Does it mess up your programs/drivers?
