Never had a laptop in my life, believe it or not. Been a solely desktop guy since I started computing in 2002.

Thinking about getting one for college. Primary usage would be note-taking, paper-writing, Netflix in the library in between classes, and the occasional casual video game on Steam.

I've been looking at the Asus Vivobook e403sa. Has a lot of great features and a 1920x1080 display, which is apparently rare for a budget laptop. This one runs $375. Pretty affordable.

I just got paid, and my folks mailed me a surprise check for my birthday. I don't flippantly spend money, however - I'm not a super wealthy guy, and I'm making my way through college. But I think it's high time I get myself a laptop. Plus, on my desktop that I assembled/built/whatever, I'm still running Windows 7 (which I love) but I wanna try Windows 10, honestly. My mother has a Windows 10 computer, and I kind of like it, honestly. Willing to give it a shot.

So, is the Asus Vivobook e403sa a good choice? Here's the Pros and Cons that I've managed to assemble after some basic research:

PROS
>full-HD (1920 x 1080)
>14-hour battery life
>Price, obviously
>Apparently, a wide-variety of ports.
>Pretty good performance capability

CONS
>Runs a little warm, according to some reviewers
>Display isn't as bright as it could be
>Some slight trackpad problems
>Shitty webcam
>Several reports of Space Bar disfunction

What do the experts at /g/ think?

Note taking on a laptop is way overrated. Vast majority of people who want to take a laptop to class for this reason end up screwing around on facebook or whatever instead.

Whipping out a pen and paper in a lecture means you mean fucking business. You're not doing shit other than taking notes. Even people who doodle still take notes.

You can try going digital and getting a stylus though.

Get a Surface Pro 4, take it back if you don't like it. OneNote is incredible, you'll probably like taking notes with it.

I've never gotten used to writing on tablet surfaces. Even signing my name on a device versus on paper is awkward.

Digitizer or analog stylus? Digitizer styluses make all the difference.

Some protips from someone who went to college when technology was neither as good as it is now, nor as affordable.
I was in University over 10 years ago, then again a couple of years ago and things are completely different now.

Record the lectures on audio and video on your phone if you can, always sit at the front.
Most lectures are just regurgitating the textbooks so use the library. Again take photos with your phone so you don't have to bother loaning and returning textbooks.
Try not to be a social outcast. What will make university easier more than anything is being informed about everything, participate in social media groups.

I'd say what you need is good phone with a good camera and microphone + large SD card, some cheap tablet to read textbooks on, and some cheap laptop to do document processing.
