Why is 10 gigabit networking still so expensive? Normally technology filters down from the enterprise level to the consumer level and the only consumer stuff becomes totally obsolete yet gigabit ethernet has been the consumer level standard for over a decade.
there is no reason for consumers to use 10gbit

Why do you need more than 100mbps?
The network has no reason to go faster than a SATA3 HDD can. Until workstations start using SAS HDDs, 1GB speeds are plenty.

SSDs can far surpass gigabit speeds with only 1 user, when you have multiple users transferring files stuff gets super congested fast.

then portchannel to 2 or 4 gbit
if you are doing high tech anime transfers then you can pay for enterprise equipment because no one else needs it
Because stagnation is key to making lots of money.

Define expensive, and how many ports. You can get Cisco 3750E's with 2 10g ports for ~150. You can daisy chain them over their stacking ports too. Cisco Nexus 3064s for $1k with 48 10g ports and 4 40g ports.

>transferring with 12.5MiB theoretical is acceptable
Networking is always expensive.
Sure 10g cabling a cards might be able to come down in price but 10g switches need to have quite a bit of muscle for the switching fabric.
2 ports = ok, 8-10 = ouch, rack mounted 24 = bend over
