I just installed KDE Neon (obviously ships with KDE 5.7) on my laptop. Feels good man. In my experience, it does take a while to load from a HDD though, so I'd highly recommend getting an SSD if you don't already have one.

OSX is a Unix based OS that was built around BSD, but it's only mostly POSIX compliant. Boot OSX in single user mode and you see copyright Berkeley University, because it's BSD based.... But like Linux it's only mostly POSIX compliant. You've got to go with a BSD distribution for true Unix.

tLdr....Linux is a free Unix clone, OSX is an expensive Unix clone.
