How much ppi is too much?
The average person can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a 5" device unless they have their eyes right next to the screen.
Also mobile VR meme.
My main computer is 276 ppi. I don't think I'd need any more than that.

Whatever is more than the pixel density that is unresolvable for someone with 20/20 vision at the approximate distance the display will be viewed at.
The problem is, the distance a person views a screen from varies.
I would like to do a comparison of 4K and 1080p at the 12.5" scale, but I'm not rich.
Maybe I could get some shill on youtube to do it.
my phone has 534 PPI. it's really nice at times but I don't think I need anything more than 1080p considering the extra resolution that I barely notice takes extra processing speed and isn't as power efficient.
Im posting this on a 2012 IPod touch. It doesnt matter how close I get to the screen I cant see any pixels

If there is a single person who can perceive the difference then it is not too much. I know I'm not average, because I can clearly see better than 20/15 which was the cutoff when I was measured by the school, but I can clearly see the pixels in my blackberry passport which is 4.5in 1440x1440

That 'retina' buzzword stuff was pretty well engineered. The rest of us just have to put up with standard screen resolutions.
