How did normies get memed into shelling out massive amounts of money every two years on premium, high-end cell phones that 90% of them use to merely browse Facebook, Instagram and play Candy Crush?

It's actually incredible how this somehow went down.
>>
Only school shooters pay for phones up front.

Normal people buy the phone on contract.
>>
Practically everyone I know pays out several hundred dollars for the newest iteration of whatever-brand-phone they have. Until last year I didn't even have a smartphone, and then I bought an S3 for 50$ and it has been smooth sailing.

There is no need for the highest power shit unless you are a phone dev, a 'hardcore' mobile phone gamer, or a cardboard autist.
>>
>Candy Crush
I have not seen one play this under 40 in years.
I visited my gf in Berkeley a couple times and there were tons of posters in the BART stations asking San Francisco if they were ready for the Jelly.
Like wtf? SF is always ready for goo.
>>
>>55815975
You are paying the full cost of the phone on contract too, just over time.

Any dickhead can just buy a mid-range, unlocked android upfront for like $300 and save themselves from paying like $20-30 extra on their bill a month.
>>
>>55816026
>You are paying the full cost of the phone on contract too, just over time.

But it's not shelling out massive amounts every 2 years.
>>
>>55816026
they are talking about normies
>>
I'm resisting the temptation to get a new phone this year. Considering moving to iPhone for once. I currently have a Nexus 6P. I want off this ride, it sucks.
>>
>>55815975
Contracts are so bad, I think I've seen 200% price for a phone with contract. Sure you ain't paying it right now, but that's a nasty money sink.
>>
>>55816039
???

So dropping $2-300 dollars up front, then taking a $20 bill spike for two years isn't shelling out a massive amount of money? I never said it was all down at once.
>>
>>55816047
>I currently have a Nexus 6P. I want off this ride, it sucks.
What's wrong with it?
>>
Same reason why /g/entoomen upgrade at least once a year.
>>
I have owned every iPhone since the 4 and I took a little break for 3 months (would have been longer) and used an Android (HTC Something they shilled really hard in 2013) it broke so it was shit.
Best experience I had was with the iPhone 4 and 4s I don't know why I ever changed.
>>
>>55816109
>Best experience I had was with the iPhone 4 and 4s I don't know why I ever changed.
Lol nostalgia. The newer phones and versions of iOS are better in EVERY way.
>>

The thing is that the vast, vast majority of people don't actually care what they get in return for their money.

They're not being "tricked" into shelling out more than they need to, they just love the thrill of dropping tons of money so they can have the super cool latest premium thing that they can show off to everyone else so they can feel important.

I'm not even ranting about normies or trying to convince you they're sheep, even though I do think it's stupid, it's just that status is such an annoyingly big part of every single culture around the world.
>>
>>55816127
>It's actually incredible how this somehow went down.
Literally every "normie" I know simply buys a cheap ass prebuilt from walmart or best buy then keeps it for 10-years until it breaks down then buys another one.
>>
>>55815975
You still pay the same amount for the phone overall, whether you buy it upfront or get it included with a contract.
>>
It's all about status.
>>
>>55816127
Yeah this guy is on the money: >>55816146

From working in retail personally, most people only really shell out significant money if they're buying a mac, and even the cunts purchasing the sub-$200 toshiba has a top of the line iPhone. Retards.
>>
>>55816146
I think he meant normies that buy $1200 Macbooks.
>>
>>55816123
They're all to big. I want a phone that fits in my pocket and my hand (yes, I have small hands)
>>
>>55815962
Because what is "merely" browsing social media to you, a slug with only his high school classmates and relatives as contacts, is an entire sphere of information exchange to the common man, from entertainment to intimate discussion to sexual pursuit. Their feeds are much more lively than yours, thus making it likelier that they see something of interest, thus making it more worthwhile to keep scrolling

So if you have a device that lets you do that anywhere, anytime, in addition to having the functions that are a pseudo-necessity in modern society, of course you'll not mind shelling out for a new one when you get bored, or more likely in the case of normies, break your old one
>>
>>55816194
iPhone SE is very small and has the latest internals.
>>
>>55816127
Furthermore, they keep that computer until it dies. Two years doesn't suddenly strike and they throw it away and buy a whole new one.
>>
>>55816211
You are just making a point for phones you goddamn idiot.

'They just spend money because they're bored' ..
>>
>>55816109
I really liked my 4s until is started getting fucky with ram after an update. My iPhone 5 had shit signal and didn't even work correctly on 3g. Honestly, like my moto g4 better so far. Better than either iphone in every way aside from maybe construction, though screens started popping out in both iPhones so time will tell. For $150 I'm happy either way.
>>
>>55816214
It's also what, $400? Why would I spend that for something that won't give me anything I will use that my current phone doesn't already give me? I would rather buy a dozen bottles of vodka with the money.
>>
>>55816221
That's hardly true

Many sell them thinking once they are out of school that they no longer have a use for them, seeing them as redundancies to their phones and tablets
>>
>>55816248
It was never my intention to convince you to upgrade to a newer iPhone.

/shrug
>>
I feel the same about nook and kindle. You can literally do everything and then some on a mini-laptop.
>>
I plan on running my 2 year old nexus 5 into the ground. I might even cancel my service soon. WiFi is everywhere and half the time I'm banned on the LTE network because of some other fag shitposting.
>>
>>55816194

I've honestly never really understood this, I don't have small hands but I've never had an issue with portability with tablets which are "too big" for anyone's hands. And on top of that, purses and shoulder bags and all manner of pouches are actually in fashion these days for both men and women to carry around your shit. I actually love just dropping my phone, wallet, and other tech junk in a bag that I can keep a hand on at all times so there's no chance of it dropping it or getting pick-pocketed while I'm busy, it's way more handy than tiny pants pockets.
>>
>>55816238
The point is addressed why they buy the expensive ones. You can't browse Twitter on your cheap little flip phone
>>
>>55816269
They have e-ink laptops?
>>
>>55815962

>>
>>55815962
My mom just bought a s7 edge and the latest samsung tablet.

I'm 25 and work in IT and they usually ask me about most tech purchases. I told her she didn't need any of those things and she would get the same experience at lower costs. The guy at the store even told her the same thing.

It's weird how these companies brainwash people into thinking they need the most powerful devices for just browsing facebook/snapchat and whatever browsing they do.

Yay!!! Something I know a lot about!!

I was a regional accounts executive for one of the big 4 US carriers when it all happened, and I got to see it from all available angles since I started as a sales rep in 2005 with an independent dealer, got promoted to store manager, got poached by corporate and worked my way up to regional management by 2009.

It was a perfect storm kind of thing, to be honest. We offered $10 unlimited data per line on family plans and when a certain company started releasing details on their move into the mobility market, other smartphone manufacturers began subsidizing handsets to us (that $600 phone actually cost us $450 until that) so we were able to do things like offer HTC WinMo and Palm Trēo handsets at the magical $99 with $100 MiR so we were actually PAYING PEOPLE a dollar to take the phones.

Once that saturated the market with Nokia Symbian smartphones, and the two aforementioned options, it made that letter phone by the fruits have an even bigger impact because smartphones were getting a decent foothold as texting/email devices... We basically went balls out on building a consumer environment where the iPhone would be more than a flash in the pan gimmick (I hate actually giving up what carrier I worked for because it could get me d0x'd, but Fuck it) because we had so much riding on that one device. Like we seriously went so hard that to guarantee the exclusive we had to agree NOT to touch Android, limit our WinMo lineup, and flat out dump Symbian after the e71 and surge. Apple wanted a guarantee of our commitment and we wanted a consumer environment where the smartphone was no longer a stuffy "adult" device, but a crucial tool to bring the rest of the world right to your pocket. Apple likes taking all of the credit, but it was a team effort. We utilized dropping the price point on the handsets and features to make them aggressively accessible (cont.)...
>>
>>55816506
I agree. If you can't afford $250k, what makes you think you can afford it with interest on top?
>>
>>55816460

My mom had an s5 and bought an s7 edge because she "needed a new phone".

While slowly phasing in specific data packages for smartphones that were triple what they paid prior to the iPhone for unlimited, and then we even phased out unlimited data entirely once smartphones were a part of daily life. Then it didn't matter if they were accessible, you HAD to have one, so we cranked up the pricing all around and made a fucking killing.

We didn't even have a single goddamn regret until android started to take off, by fortuitously, just as some really good devices started coming to market our exclusivity with apple ended and we were able to start bringing android devices into our lineup.

In all honesty, nothing.

Do research. Find one that has an actual good sensor for the camera, reasonable storage or expandable storage, and apps for everything you might want to use it for, and find the cheapest one that meets those requirements.

>>
>>55816605
Yep. And I'm partially to blame for that, at least with the death star. In the mid Atlantic market, I suggested increasing the $10 unlimited to $25 for BlackBerry and $30 for iPhone. It tested well, with negligible churn and very little holdout on renewals despite the cost increase, so it was rolled out to other markets, tested just as well, and became company (then industry) standard before they made it even worse by doing away with unlimited and charging $25 for 2GB... That wasn't me. I was gone by then. My gift from the company for the smartphone-specific data packages was being laid off with a reasonable severance package.

>>
>>55816684
I don't blame you, anon. Nor do I really blame the company. What you did was good business.

I blame the public, who didn't tell the company to go jump in a lake when the first increases happened, and then happily swallowed subsequent price hikes and ever tighter data caps, because they wanted their shiny new phones, with shitty new pointless apps.

>Anon, what happened to my phone? Why doesn't it look the same?
>Anon, you messed my phone up! I keep getting an error and it won't let me in!

>>55815962

One reason is because many normies see phones as a fashion accessory. If you don't have the newest iShit then you are a poorfag to be mocked.

Another reason is that phone companies shove the "free" upgrades down their customer's throat so most people take the offer. I say "free" because those upgrades just lock the customers into a new contract that keeps them paying those ridiculous fees. Since they are normies, they have no idea how to pick a phone and will always go for the upgrade because their current phone is too slow, picking another shit phone to upgrade to.

>>
>>55816791
And that was exactly the consumer environment we worked so hard to cultivate by dropping the up front cost and initially allowing smartphones to run off the generic $10 unlimited data. We did something different than what was done with cars, TV, etc. Instead of making people wait and only the 1%ers could have a smartphone (which face it, at the time they were basically feature phones with a full keyboard, push email, and a java enabled browser), we made them accessible to teenagers on family plans. Once we leveraged that to create an environment where you "had" to have a smartphone, otherwise you were a loser we rolled out the iPhone. So now, even if you have a smartphone, unless is a new Palm Trēo or an iPhone, you're a loser again. Then we rolled out texting phones that weren't smartphones and shifted the data plans so that the feature phones were $10 unlimited and smartphones were $25 unlimited (iPhone $30) and that's where we officially became bastards.

I'm just glad I got laid off when I did because I could not have stayed with the company if my smartphones data plan idea added soft caps after 2gb. I really couldn't have kept silent and I'd have been fired rather than "downsized". My severance package and 401k were a necessity.

I have zero need to upgrade from my S4. It does everything I need it to. The only thing I wouldn't mind is a better camera, although I should probably just shell out for an ACTUAL camera instead. I'll get a S5 when they drop to the same $100-ish price mark I got my S4 at.

I own several phones for security reasons. I do not trust phone software especially the cloud to protect my data.

I have a tablet only for financial apps. It has a unique email and no social or "sharing" apps. The microphone and camera are disabled.

I have a sports/health phone that I pair with my bike sensors, my heart rate monitor, my blood pressure monitor, my ECG and blood glucose monitors. It also has a unique email to interface with some MyHealth apps for secure messaging to doctors, scheduling appointments, doing Rx refills, etc. Again, no other social or "sharing" apps that could access my personal health data.

Lastly I have my "normal" social phone that I use for email, social networks, camera, music and video streaming, etc.. It's like most people's phone except I keep it void of any financial or health data.

I usually stay about 1-gen behind current, buying new for about half the original price. Currently using an iPad Air, Samsung Galaxy S5 Active, and LG G4.
>>
Quick thing about pricepoints: they are established as much by consumers as by producers. People are willing to pay for $600 phones, so the price point is $600.

$600 for owning something "premium" that you will use every day for 2-3 years is not a difficult sell.

I got a slightly used S5 for 100$. Rooted, unlocked, RoM'd, with a brand new Anker battery and Sd Slot.
Besides the camera having poor lowlight performance and having the ugliest chassis known to man, I spent half the price for what people spend for the same experience. And even then, they may not be able to install enhancements and customize it the way they want because of US greed and locked BLs.

What's sad is the S5 is the only available device that's smaller than 5.5, has an sd, removable battery, AMOLED, can have CM installed, and will work on all US carriers. That shit is just ridiculous.

>>
>>55817603
Don't forget that the device you get with a contract is locked, too.

I'd love to have my phone plan paid for by my parents, but they live in another country.
>>
>>55817467

A few years ago you would pay higher fees on your bill for a "free" phone over the entire contract. If you add up those fees you were paying more than the phone itself. Even if you brought a different device, your phone bill would stay the same. Absolutely disgusting.

Now that people are starting to wise up, the cell phone companies are getting rid of contracts. Now instead of getting money from non-existent phone costs, they are getting money from non-existent data costs. Before data was unlimited but now we have to pay out the ass for data that doesn't cost the company anything. The plans are still shit but in a different form.

I'm using project fi and while I think their plans are still overpriced, it is the best you can get in the US since they pro-rate your data and give you a discount on your next bill if you didn't use up your data allowance.

When I was with verizon I had to pay seperate for voice, text, and data (aren't they all literally the same thing today?). On top of that I had to pay a bullshit smartphone fee, a bullshit network access fee (isn't that what the plan supposed to be?!), and some other misc taxes that show up NOWHERE on my project fi bill. Fuck that company.
>>
>>55817628
Sure, but my financial situation allows me to easily weather the cost of a new phone upfront, so there's no reason for me to spread the payments and get an inferior (locked) device for the same or more money.

Not him but I do. Switched to it after getting fucked by Verizon and absolutely not wanting to deal with their shitty stores or inept customer service anymore. I only shitpost and occasionally browse other sites on my phone, vidya for me is only at home or just emulators on the go. I bearly use 1GB a month so it's great for me. Monthly bill is usually anywhere from $25 - 30.

Only caveat is that you have to use either the Nexus 5x or 6p. Got the 5x from their site at $200 and it's decent enough, though not high end by any means it still gets the job done.

Only Important thing I recommended is switching on the data limit in the phone settings. Accidently turned it off once and streamed a movie at home thinking I was using my wifi, got an e-mail saying I went over my limit at 4.8 GB and got stuck with a $60 bill like a retard.
>>
>>55818407
Have to admit I'm torn anon.

I usually use less than 1gb so it'd be a good price, probably $30 a month including taxes. And $200 for a 5X seems bretty gud.

I'd miss being able to listen to radio though. I commute by train so it's not like i can use the radio in my car. Until I saw Fi I was thinking of getting a Moto G. Damn.

>>
>>55818552
Check to see if there's available wifi on your commute. I turn off Fi in wifi hotspots when I can. You can also always download some songs and maybe even a couple of podcasts at home then just listen to them during your commute the next day.
>>
>>55818552

I listen to pandora on my phone and I never go above my 2GB limit. Only time I did was when I turned off wifi and forgot to turn it on. I was watching a lot of youtube videos in bed and went over my 2GB limit in one night.

If you have comcast, there are a ton of wi-fi hotspots you can use in cities. Shitty thing is they have login portals so your phone can't automatically switch to them.
>>
>>55818861
There is wifi but it's $5 a day.

Podcasts are a good idea, thanks for the suggestion. If I'm really desperate I could get a little pocket radio too.

You say you turn off Fi in hotspots... any reason why?

>>55818965
How much do you listen to it? My commute is about 2.5 hours each day.
>>
>>55817223
>I usually stay about 1-gen behind current, buying new for about half the original price. Currently using an iPad Air, Samsung Galaxy S5 Active, and LG G4.

I burn through phones every few years because they have built-in time bombs. Somewhere in the chain, Android or Apple stops doing security updates for older versions of their OS. The manufacturers stop retrofitting these updates to their phones. The carriers stop providing updates for older phones to their subscribers. Running a custom OS, e.g. CM, sometimes doesn't work because some banking and trading apps check for signed OS versions, etc... So it seems like 2 - 3 years is the useful life of a phone that needs to run current apps.

This.

The market revolves around flagships. Apps are built to work with flagships in mind. Buying a 1/2 year old phone or a non-flagship/Nexus Android phone often means having to deal with slow apps and a shitload of glitches. The quoted image has been true for EVERY iPhone I've ever owned.

I used to use old/junior flagship Android phones for years until I started using my phone for more than just phone calls and messenger.

>>55815962
Normies are tech retarded. They believe it is a sin to open any device you have paid for. They believe they must take anything that isn't functioning properly to the people that sold them the thing for it to be fixed, instead of fixing it themselves. They don't understand the word "proprietary," but if they did they would embrace it as the greatest thing ever conceived. Many of them also consider phones a status symbol. People with the money to buy one will buy one for the sake of buying one, and people without the money to buy one might be able to get one anyway via government subsidies.

Also, companies like being able to harass their employees 24/7, so if you try to resist they will just buy you a smartphone.

>They believe they must take anything that isn't functioning properly to the people that sold them the thing for it to be fixed, instead of fixing it themselves.

I don't see the problem here. It's okay to pay a lot for things that are important to you.

>>55819464
The truth is it has nothing to do with planned obsolescence. After two years even Android phones still do 99% of the shit you usually do. It's simply about what people want and if the device is something they use multiple hours every day and are even seen in public using those devices, they tend to want the latest and greatest, even though it really makes no substantial difference.

That's because they're women. And women are designed to burn money. All of you in this thread are neglecting that women have had a drastic increase in purchasing power these past few years. As such the economy will reflect some of their decisions: designer shit, shiny shit and expensive shit. And why is this the case? Because women are designed to hoard objects of value so as to increase her pool of resources in her search for a mate. Knowing this, (((marketers))) have designed a cult of personality that actively fosters this behavior among women and lately among men. All so that (((they))) can get more money.

Tl;dr Blame women, those who enable them, and those who manipulate them for the current situations in the world.

Been on Fi for 4 months, it's pretty legit.

Only issues I've had is sometimes if it is trying to make a phonecall on wifi and the network is being used for a fuckload of torrents I have to turn off the wifi connection briefly.

I don't really use data, I have open wifi at home and work - I just listen to my playlists during the commute.

Even if you use google maps for 4 hours a day you'd end up with ~$3 worth of charges in data at the end of the month.

Android and iOS are both designed to slow down older devices with every new version.

>but iOS doesn't lag
Yes it does, I'm using it on a freshly wiped iPad Mini 2 and it's definitely laggy. Anyone who claims it isn't laggy must not be using the Retina version.

>but Android doesn't lag
Yes it does, when KitKat came out my GNex got so ungodly slow that I was forced to upgrade to the N5. My N5 has served me well so far, but I'm almost certain that Android N will lag it up and I'll be forced to upgrade yet again.

Sure they do. Status is super important in normie land. (And also in basement-dweller land, it's just conveyed by different means)

There are statistics and studies that show people would rather, for the same money, buy e.g. 300 square meter houses if they neighbors have 250 ones, than 350 ones if their neighbors have 400 ones.
Bigger status, relative to all others, also means you get more pussy.
So the absolute worth |·| comes far later, when the < relation has been evaluated.

Since learning new technology is actually not fun to most people (people browsing /g/ are of course an exception), and most people rather, like your mom probably, doesn't want to waste time figuring stuff out if it's not an end of itself, stick to the iPhone track. So people get back to their standard but luxury items.
So the question becomes why the dominating company, Apple say, managed to get into the pool position. They had a long run and were first with a bunch of things.

The best possible scenario is to buy a flagship 6-12 months after release and never on release, for the following reasons:

1. cheaper
2. still blows similarly-priced newer mid-range phones out of the water
3. software has matured (both for official firmware and third-party custom ones)
4. any problems present with the initial production batch are likely to have been fixed
