I reccommend Lubuntu x64.

The most secure way I can think of is:

On your personal machine, create two burner email accounts
Boot into a linux USB on a burner machine (local library or something similar)
Peruse the contents
Log into one of the email accounts and send anything interesting to the other (or dump the entire disk image and send that)

Optional: Back on your personal machine, within a VM, download the files. There's the issue of not being able to ensure the files you pull don't themselves exploit some vulnerability on the system (ex. pictures somehow executing code through the photo viewer), which would make doing anything with them dangerous without a dedicated burner machine.

It's unlikely that the drive contains anything serious (bootloader rootkits, VM escapes, etc), so this is probably overkill.

I honestly don't know enough about virtualization but as far as I know you'd pass the block level device through the host system and then mount it for I/O inside the VM. There are ways of jumping out of a VM but from what I can see stuxnet specifically would be more concerned with causing damage from within the virtual machine itself assuming it detects one. You aren't really safe from rootkits and the likes in a VM for sure, I guess the best way to test it if you're that concerned is to use a throwaway computer isolated from your network.
