Is this pretty much the end? Should I move back to W7?
>>
i learned from buying vista that upgrading to the next biggest thing is a HORRIBLE mistake, and to always wait until it's clear how good or bad it is. Blind consumerism allowed this to happen, and folks like me who use win 7 or 8.1 that knew better find it fucking hilarious.

seriously vista left such a bad taste in my mouth i ended up using xp until 2014.
>>

Group policy editor isn't going away, but some policies will not be enforced on Home/Pro.

It is pretty bullshit, though. I imagine they will reneg on the changes once business and work complains.
>>
>>55802945
As far as I can tell, Cortana was never really "Disabled" anyway, it just didn't say the word "Cortana" in some places, and it only allowed basic file seraches.

You could still do the edits through regedit. Until they fucking remove that too.

They already are. The registry settings do nothing on Home/Pro. They are just ignored by the OS.

I don't know, I still think you could get away with the 32-bit version on 1 GB RAM if you disabled absolutely everything and powershell-wiped all the crapps.
>>
>>55802983
The thing is, a lot of people DID wait, and after almost a year of other people shilling it, they thought it was the best Windows iteration yet.

And then Microsoft started doing this out of nowhere.
>>
>>55803065
Good question, why don't you ask MS? It was hard enough giving away Win 10 for free. They are in for a rude awakening if they really think people are going to pay for the priviledge of losing control over basic aspects of their computer.

do not upgrade to win10. security updates for win7 last until 2020.

why would want an operating system that can tell microsoft whether or not you have pirated games on your system? why would you want to be part of the information collection botnet? who the fuck needs all that dumb shit in the start menu? why do you want your data stored on external cloud servers beyond your control? why do you want to use an operating system that turns its telemetry back on after updates - updates that you can't even choose whether or not to receive? why would you want to have an os that doesn't let you actually control anything?

(that being said, you can actually just get win10, make installation media for it, and then revert using the rollback tool or a system image, and then that machine is entitled to win10 in the future at any time for free)

I mean, uh, RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE

It doesnt, it is optional alternative pament model for bussines.

>Cortana can't be disabled at all

She can, by Group Policy editor. Also, a lot of language versions (that still comes with English or can simply get installed proper language pack) comes without Cortana in first place.

>Group Policy Editor is now disabled/removed from W10 Pro

It is not, gpedit is still there, only few policies change to "Enterprise/Edu only". This include Win 10 tips or lock screen disable option, but not critical ones like telemetry control, updates delivery options or web searching/recommended sites.

You can check the list of affected policies yourself. Shouldnt be hard, there are four, you dont even need more than one hand, another can remain in pants.

Everything else stays as it was. GP editor is still there, providing its functionality, not going anywhere.

>Even though MS released news a few days ago saying that she can't be disabled at all.

Yes, she cant be disabled in Settings "app"... but policy related to disabling Cortana is not blocked on Pro and will remain here after next update. In other words, you can still disable her.

What they said was true, from certain point of view. What I said is also true. It all depends on how you provide the info.

you can avoid it, you just have to put in effort. every time it restarts after updates, a lot of telemetry points will be reactivated. you just have to go through and disable them again before connecting to the internet.

Microsoft is desperate to enforce Win10 to everyone in order to improve their EcoSystem to the level of Apple, since their ecosystem is pretty organized.

There will ALWAYS be workarounds around EVERYTHING if there are enough people to dedicate themselves on a problem, they'll fix it.

I understand that some of you feel comfortable using Windows. Be patient, workarounds will be available.

If your current motherboard will last you a few more years and you plan on having a GPU that can do Direct X12, upgrade to Win 10 and downgrade imminently to keep that option open in the future.

If you're current machine is a non gaming laptop or was a PC built in early 2012, don't even bother with that, unless you really think you'll have the same hardware in 2020.

There is now an additional subscription tier for small business who could not previously obtain enterprise edition.

Very Disingenuous/misinformed/bordering deliberate fallacy - Several GPOs have been locked to Enterprise/Education/Server, 95% of GPOs still work on Windows 10 Pro, and the GP Editor is still there.

Professionals may have preferences in operating system, but aren't so foolish as to disparage another system and especially not to make lies about another system.
In reality a professional will see an Windows system and see dollar signs thinking of all the extra support callouts.

NEETs on the other hand are generally fanboys who take great offense when someone chooses something toher than what they have chosen - as they have nothing else in their lives but those choices.
To choose something other than their preferred OS is to insult them directly as they somehow feel their choice has been invalidated and by extension they have been invalidated.

Enterprise versions of Windows have needed a subscription for years, aka Software Assurance. They are actually lowering the price except for large orgs. There are no plans to introduce subscriptions for home versions of Windows. It would break their OEM agreements if they did that: they are planning to charge directly, from... about now, actually. If you think you might want a current version of Windows rather than legacy shit, upgrading now would be a good time. If not, install Gentoo etc. I know none of my software, going forward, will support downlevel versions of Windows.

Cortana is not quite what you think it is, can still be disabled via Group Policy on Pro, and in any case you've been using it all along as it is the core of the Start menu's (crap) search. You can still tell it to not personalise, although yes I question the validity of that decision, because Cortana is some putrid shit.

Group Policy is still there, just 4 of the settings are non-functional in consumer versions of Windows. None of them particularly deal-breaker, they were all oriented towards Enterprise desktop management. It is still concerning they would remove features (except that WiFi thing, that was a stupid idea in the first place). We may simply put them back in forcibly if people miss them.

I see, well I use Avast/Malwarebytes/Spybot all at once, so it was weird how the latter two didn't say shit about it and was like "This is clean" but then Avast was like AIYOO HOLLL UP.

I guess given how pirated software usually comes to risks for bitminer/trojan/malware I just got used to assuming that was the case if I caught something. Shame on me.

>>55813270
I was recommended this around 2-3 years ago? Should I not use it anymore? Cause I know it seems to be active a lot, but I don't know any free alternatives that's good, Malwarebytes and Spybot don't seem to do jack shit for anti virus, well not free versions anyways.

Of course you can disable it and even remove it, stop saying shit
>>

it turned shit about a yearish ago
>>

So what do we use now?
>>
>>55809865

A million times this.

I'm shit with computers and even I figured out how to turn off the botnet by doing some quick Google searches. I even killed Cortana (doesn't appear in Task Manager). If I can do it, any of you can.

And like anon said, just pirate the fucking thing and don't give it any personal info.

And for all you scared of the botnet, the simple truth is the ONLY fucking way you can avoid it is by not giving it your info in the first place. I don't care if you have crazy hacking skills, if you register Windows under your name or have a cellphone plan that has your personal info, or use social media giving it ANYTHING that can identify you, etc., you're fucked. All this telemetry bullshit doesn't mean shit in the grand scheme of things.

I pirated win10, I bought a prepaid cell phone (registered under fake name/address), I didn't register my mac. There's no possible way not to feed the botnet. The important thing is give it nothing that traces back to you personally. Get a good VPN (several to choose form), a few addons (noscript/self destruct cookies/https everywhere), and protonmail for email and you'll be fine. Stop acting like a bunch of bitches about Win10.

>>55810942

I fucking love OSX, but even I will defend the need for Windows (have both). If anything, once configured, this is a GREAT htpc/gaming machine (at least with Vulcan is now is). Just wish I was smart/patient enough for Linux, but I've got a million projects right now and just don't have the time.

Since when did MSE/MD get good enough? Or was it just a matter of Avast turning to shit and choosing the lesser evil?

I lack common sense, so that's a no go for me. The shiny buttons call to me.

I have a desktop running Windows 10 and a brand new Retina Macbook Pro 13"...
I wanted to wait for the 2016 model but my 2011 kicked the bucket and it is the only machine I had available for while I was finishing up Summer classes/work at my university.
Having both OS is great and I wouldn't want things any other way.
Macbook Pros are amazing with battery life which is a top priority for me when I work 4 hours and have class for 5 then have enough battery left over to watch 2 hours of movies.

Pretty much, yes. And Edu, if you happened to be a student or uni staff member, thats the same.

Bonus points if you have language version from region that dont support Cortana yet.

Fuck this I'm buying a Mac. I'm done with Microsoft. All you paid shills on damage control can't fix this one.

I used to be a huge fan of them. Been using since Windows 95 and ever since Windows 8 they've been going downhill as a company.

It's over. This is the final straw. I'm not all that into Stallman's philosophy on free software, but even I can see that this is very bad. I'm sure normal users will too.

This is great advertisement for Linux and macOS. Just like how Windows Vista was for Apple.

See you all in hell I'm getting a Mac. Fuck Microsoft and fuck you cucks defending them enjoy your lockscreen advertisements you bitch.

I don't know how to describe it but Windows feels less 'real' than it used to. Since the jump to Windows 8 and beyond, the OS just feels less substantial in a way I can't really explain.

I'm kinda fucked. I've used insider previews and win10 pro for a what, two years now? They've seemed quite okayish and I pulled the trigger and said this spring to our corp board that we could migrate to win10 pretty easily.

Now, we have few remote offices with 10-20 windows 10 pro machines each.

I feel kinda betrayed by this move MS pulled.

Displaying ads on lockscreens in our office won't do. Win 10 pro licences are $200 a pop? And they're still showing ads down our throats?

Fuck me.
