What is the /g/ replacement for the godtier (discontinued) sansa clip+/zip?
>>
Another Clip Zip
FiiO X1/3/5
xDuoo X3
>>
Just go on the Rockbox website and see which compatible walkman has the most features you need.
>>
>>55797990
>Another Clip Zip
Ridiculously overpriced
>FiiO X1/3/5
>xDuoo X3
Lacking in portability
>Walkman with rockbox and sd support
Such a thing doesn't exist
>>
>>55798071
The X1 and xDuoo X3 are actually pretty small.
You don't really need rockbox with a walkman anyway. Get the new A series
>>
>>55797944

The phone you already have in your pocket.
>>
>>55798083
Those weigh 7x respective 3x as much as the clips do.
>Walkman A series
Good contender but pricy, also no clip
>>55798111
We've been over this meme countless times. Phones are less expendable, heavier, lack the clip, no physical buttons, battery life, may lack expandable storage, etc.
>>
What do you need the clip for
>>
>>55798286
Phones dont need a clip, theu fit in your pocket.
Touchscreen is superior to physical buttons and way less cumbersome.
Music doesn't even impact battery life on phones anymore
>>
>>55798527
but a phone with a good DAC is not cheep,
Fiio X1 is nearly 100$
>>
>>55798566
I don't know, the htc m8 is getting cheap.
Plus is has a good screen and some of the best speakers on any mobile device, plus its in stereo.

Plus you can root it and get viper4android
>>
>>55798527
>Phones dont need a clip, theu fit in your pocket.
False, going for a run or bike ride with a phone plus music can be really annoying. Flailing with your arms might catch the cord, it might fall out of your pocket, it will bounce around in your pocket, and a lot of high end pants don't even have decent pockets. Also don't mention those shitty bracelet things.
>Touchscreen is superior to physical buttons and way less cumbersome.
No, not at all. You have to avert all attention to the phone screen to navigate it. I can switch tracks in my pocket, or while it is attached to my shirt without looking, can you?
>Music doesn't even impact battery life on phones anymore
It's still an impact

And you still didn't respond to a ton of other arguments. Phones are great, but for some purposes a dedicated little device is better.
>>
The clip+ was so good I bought three new ones before it discontinued to give to friends but I never got around to that, so I have one well working clip+ and 3 brand new ones.
>>
>>55798527
I can't listen to music and play Pokemon GO at the same time.
>>
>>55798601
yes but for someone who dont want to change their smartphone just for the DAC, X1-likes are a good choice

>USE THE PHONE

Fuck you if you say this.

OP clearly has his reasons for wanting a dedicated mp3 player. Looking through the archive, every thread is almost always 2/3 arguments about phones vs mp3 players. Jesus christ just answer the goddamn question.

I've been thinking about this question OP and this player is pretty good for me.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B015OC3FUU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3OI3LRK7WT20W

I travel a lot and I also run so a player with a long battery life and that isn't too expensive is good for me.
>>
>>55798601
The camera on the M8 is shit, and it most likely won't get Nougat.
>>
>>55798786
If I understand the correctly the people behind the player in your link also made these:

http://www.gearbest.com/mp3-mp4-players/pp_275871.html
http://www.gearbest.com/mp3-mp4-players/pp_144002.html
http://www.gearbest.com/mp3-mp4-players/pp_134760.html

Sadly they lack the clip and aren't that good looking save for the x02, but if nothing better comes up I think I might be getting one of these.
>>
Shit nigga, these are worth money? I just found one in my drawer a couple months ago.
>>

>>
I still use Philips gogear sa6085/02. Audio books and lectures when doing whatever. Not bad.
>>
Mine broke a few months back and now I just use my phone. Because there is no replacement. Rockbox is essentially dead. And the Clip is way too expensive now. Fuck this gay earth.
>>
>>55798659
You can't?? If I have Spotify or similar playing when I start Pokemon Go it pauses the music, then I can just go in from the notification tray and hit play and it mutes Pokemon and plays my music. I have an Android though, maybe it's different for iPhone.
>>
>>55799139
I must've dropped mine and I have another one which isn't working, I'm sad because it was literally all I could ever ask for in a music player.

I can tell you've never done anything physical while listening to music. Having the clip allows you to fasten the player to a fixed location meaning no need to fumble in your pocket or put strain on the cord.
Having physical buttons means you can easily control your music without having to pull the device out. This is done even more easily with a small form factor like the clip.
>>
>>55798655
I regret not stocking up on new ones. I remember when they were dirt cheap

The sport has at least double the battery capacity, it lasts for 24hrs+. They do use cheaper components with less memory though, which was the reason why rockbox couldn't be ported to to it. For me with one huge playlist on random, the sport is plenty good for my uses, still have my two clip+ floating around anyway even if one needs the power button resoldered. Oh and the battery connector on my sport needed to be resoldered as well.
>>
>>55798006
Rockbox only works on shit that's long been discontinued, and holy lol at the suggestion they've got it working stable on Sony hardware. It only exists for people that still somehow have working players, and the main devs know this to the point where they don't give a shit anymore, and get pissy when it's suggested that the project really has nowhere else to go if they're 100% out of actively-made hardware to port it to, i.e. it's fucking dead (which it really is from a hardware standpoint)

The problem with the newer Sandisk players (Jam/Zip) is that documentation is near-nonexistent, and everything that DOES exist indicates that these are budget SoC's that are too closed-off and/or underpowered to port to, granted the remaining team isn't exactly a bastion of programming expertise as it is, but if there was a way to port to these players, someone would've found out by now

You're a bloody retard.

Honestly the best choice is a phone with SD storage. I use my G4 for music all the time with black player. Works like a charm.

Everybody knows the real battery drain is screen on time, but you can get headphones with buttons desu.

It seems like there aren't really any replacements to the clip zip which is kind of sad desu
>>
The only thing keeping me away from music on my phone is the 1000 song per playlist limit on Google Music and Deezer (which I use on PC). I want to shuffle through my library and the only way to do that would be via a big playlist. As long as I can't do that, I stick with my 6 years old Cowon J3 + pirating.

And Spotify won't let me upload my own mp3 library to sync with my phone

For me it's perfect when you are on the go. Sure if you plan to only use it on commutes it's not as useful. Also when players still were cheap I didn't have to worry that much about breaking or losing one, I could always just buy a new one.

Using a phone isn't an option for everyone, there have been various anons with good reasons as to why the prefer a dedicated player.

Also headphones with buttons don't tend to give a good bang for a buck (maybe the newer chink ones do but still) and I'd rather not buy a new set of headphones just to get the same functionality I've been used to for years.

Wew, you are both retarded. Not as retarded as the guys trying to start an argument about phones in a dedicated music player thread, but still.

I'm still using a ZEN X-Fi Style which will sooner or later die. No idea what to replace it with.

Also, needing FLAC for a portable player.. ffs guys just do an ABX test and let the meme die. It's alright to need lossless at home to keep your nervosa down, where storage is no issue. But why use FLAC on the go if you can't possibly distinguish from high bitrate mp3/your favorite lossy meme?
>>
>>55803948
You don't need the same capacity. Same voltage yes though.
I've actually done a battery replacement on my Clip+. Battery type 323036P fits just fine.
Although if you're okay with some ghetto niggerrigging you can wire up a big-ass battery. Tempting, to be honest. Get a big battery, drill a small hole in the back of the case and just thread the wires through, then hotglue it together, then snap the case back together. Could get batteries as big as you damn well please-forget 320mAh, think 3000.
Removing the clip on the back of course (it's probably already broken on yours anyway).

Well, if you never compare to the actual source at the same effective volume, how could you know if there is a difference? You obviously don't give much of a fuck about audio, not that there is anything wrong with that. You do you.
Just makes it a bit weird for you to try and argue with people who'd like to give one.

A problem you might be unaware of running into with your use of EQ is clipping. After being "mastered" the peak level of audio in the digital files is usually very close to the 0dBFS limit, if not already smashed against it. If you put positive gain onto these files (after all those transcodes it doesn't get any better) you smash the audio even further. Depending on how your player handles those peaks you are really shitting all over the audio. That's really the only problem of consumer EQs, they most often are situated before the volume control, thus cause clipping if any positive gain is applied.
>>
>>55799857
I don't have/use a phone.
>>
I bought an iPod Touch 1G off a guy on the street for $30 and it has lasted me years. Also I've been able to put a bunch of songs on it and the sound quality is pretty good.
>>
>>55798566
The DAC doesn't do that, it doesn't do what you think it does to audio quality. A good DAC doesn't mean much at all.

>>55815184
Most of the parametric EQs have gain sliders.
>>
>>55797944
i bricked my fucking sansa, how to unbrick?
>>
I would recommend Xduoo X2, cheap portable DAC. ~35$ on gearbest, 45 on penon, around the same size as the clip+ but no clip.
Sound is great, a little bass heavy though, all around a great replacement for the sansa.
>>
>>55815391
>>
>>55815447
PS: UI is worse than rockbox, last firmware version 0.7 corrected a lot of things however. EQ may be limited for your needs.
>>
>>55815390

I produce a bit of "music" myself, so I know what a parametric EQ is and how to work it. I have no idea what you are trying to tell me though. That there are (very few) consumer EQs (in almost every case graphical) that allow you to attenuate input?

My point is: Applying positive gain to music puts you at a very high risk to clip your audio, hence should always be avoided.
>>
>>55799139
Just get a Fiio X1, its a good replacement/upgrade from the sansa clip
>>
>>55815492
I know all that, and there a lot of PEQ solutions available to the end user.
Consumer oriented players, audiophile, whatever you want to call it have gain controls to avoid wave clipping.
>>
>>55815542

See, this is why I hate the "audiophile" community. They somehow managed it to discredit the word "consumer" as some kind of non-member to their club of exclusive shitheads. When I say consumer I just mean that, the person listening, not producing.

You might be right, but most EQs I have come accross, be it soundcard drivers, players, apps, you name it, actually don't avoid clipping. And also don't even tell you they are clipping.

I knew what you were referring to, and "audiophile" is a dirty word outside of that clique. I think the fashion is to refer to yourself as a music lover instead.
>but most EQs I have come accross
They definitely aren't all created equal. Some have much better implementation than others.
Here are a few poor results from certain players.
>>
>>55816225

Jesus, I guess that's what you get for using poorly implemented graphical EQs. One can only guess how terrible some of the 2-5 band EQs of player apps are.

mp3 players are obsolete.

just get on your phone

Buy the poweramp app

and get yourself some cheap blutooth headphones.

if you want buttons without looking at your phone. there are alot of headphones out there that allow you to control your phones mp3 player via the volune buttons via double clicks and holding.

and all these things cost less than 50 dollars combined.

seriously its 2016
do some research
apps and blutooth technology isnt the gimick they were 5 years ago
>>
>>55818124

???
It's the most accurate of all those built-in EQs, and you're most likely not even using it. Just has bad band parametrization. Get a better one as plugin and be happy.

Can't, Pokémon Go's not supported. I'm getting a secondary phone just for the game.

All you really need to know is that there's over 7 billion people in the world and not one of them is going to think exactly like you do. Some people like certain things. Others don't. I can guarantee you that you do things I don't understand. Like thinking a phone is an even remotely decent choice for a PMP

What the literal fuck are you doing to a Clip+ that makes it fall apart in under a year? I've got one I've had for ages. It's been dropped, tossed, and dunked in water. Still works fine though the battery is finally starting to go.

If you mean just the clip breaking off the back, yeah, that happened to mine. It's not an integral part and the player is even more compact without it. Just file off the remains of it and find another way to attach it to what you want or slip it into a pocket.

Most of the buttons on my Clip+ work poorly, and I have to press them really hard for them to work. I suspect it's dust from keeping it in my pocket.

This is a perfect solution for people who don't mind subpar sound quality or headphones that randomly disconnect and need to be charged separately.

Clip+ and similar high quality MP3 players beat the DAC and amp in most phones. IIRC the Clip+ has 1 ohm impedance, making it able to drive many high end headphones and earbuds without a separate headphone amp.

I just keep buying refurbished sansa clips+. I now have 4 backups which should last me for a decade.

The only thing that dies in them is the non-replaceable battery - I have them running a few hours a day, every day and the first one I bought a few years back can only hold 2 hours charge now.

Truth is there is no replacement for sasna clip+ yet. There might not be one for years. Sansa came out of nowhere and sadly got folded into sandisk and the new versions are like any other generic player.

>>55824570
You could probably replace the battery. I had sweat get in my prior one and it shorted in a non-obvious place. The one before that I fucked up the headphone port then pulled the pad off while trying to replace it ;_;

Battery would be relatively easy if you can find one with the right specs and/or compatible power regulator.
>>
>>55825006
You can google the symptoms and get a pretty good idea about what the issue is. As for replacement batteries I wouldn't know, I haven't done that yet.
>>
>>55823502
>IIRC the Clip+ has 1 ohm impedance
It does, and that's a good thing. It minimizes peculiar frequency interaction with the load.

>making it able to drive many high end headphones and earbuds without a separate headphone amp
Not the Clip+.
Clip+ has low output impedance, but the noise floor is slightly high and the maximum voltage is not impressive.
Aside from the very low output impedance, most phones eclipse it, especially the iPhone that audiophiles sneer at(which has pretty good audio performance).

>similar high quality MP3 players beat the DAC and amp in most phones
Other players, such the Fiio X1 and Cowon Plenue D can deliver performance beyond almost any phone without bleeding prices, but there are plenty of dedicated players with poor audio, just as with smartphones.
