I'm thinking about getting a new mouse, since mine has a habit of freezing.
What do you recommend?
This one. If you would ever consider anything else commit suicide.

something cheap and simple, don't go full retard with "gaming" mouses and don't buy gimmicky ones unless you really need the features

It's not for gaming. I just want something reliable.

The wired elecom mouse that I got goes to sleep when I don't use it for a couple seconds. Very annoying.

Watch out if you pull the trigger on an Intellimouse though. How long they last is a crap shoot and the warranty MS offers is only a year.
I bought this fucker right here for $22 back in 2010. It worked great for about a year and half (past the warranty) before all single clicks became double clicks. I didn't set this in the OS.

Never had such a problem. Return it and get a new one.

I've had that exact one for like 4 years and still works perfectly.
