Because JPEG is still a much better format for photos people take with their smartphones. PNGs of equivalent quality are 3-5x bigger (which inflates your hosting bill).

iOS is an important chunk of almost every company that operates in a first-world country. Besides, properly coded websites (i.e. not 4chinz) serve h.264 video to iOS users, which is decoded in hardware. Most Android devices don't even have hardware decoders for webm.

jpgs are usually easier to upload as they have a smaller file size and are easier on bandwidth limits than png's. Not everywhere supports webm yet but gifs are more universally accessible world-wide.

PNG is better when images have less and less colors

because technologies have specific purposes, famalam. compare the file sizes of pngs to jpgs, compare exif and metadata potential, their encoding as lossless vs. lossy, etc. you wouldn't use png for a photo unless you literally have no idea what a png is for. you wouldn't use jpgs for gui assets, aside from backgrounds and eye-catches, unless you literally have no idea what a jpg is for.

same deal for gifs and webms. every technology has its purpose. don't use a gif for a webm's job, don't use a webm for a gif's job.
