Whats the best way to protect my external hardrives and computer from virus.

I work in a small production company, and most of the times we have people coming over with material shot and saved on SD cards, flashdrives or portable hard drives. Of course, I'm worried of my computer getting an STD.

Are storage media borne virus and spyware still an issue as they used to be with WIN XP and recycler?
