Hey /g/ sorry to bother you guys for a such a stupid little thing,

Hey /g/ sorry to bother you guys for a such a stupid little thing, bit I just installed Ubuntu and I'm having this issue.

Tried downloading Chrome, and after trying to install I get that little question mark on the dock.
It's frozen there.

If any of you know a solution I would appreciate it.
>>
You installed a Linux system. There is your problem.
>>
is this the new desktop thread
>>
>>55742210
Doesn't it have some kinda package manager? Why did you go to the chrome website?
>>
>chrome
WHY? You're on Linux goddammit. Use Opera, or at least Chromium.
>>
>>55742210
Use the package manager to install chrome

Should be sudo apt-get install chrome, assuming ubuntu is still using apt
>>
>>55742251
>Opera
>installing a chinese botnet
>>
Hey OP, you're going to have to install it using terminal or use gdebi as your package manager.

But I'll show how to install it using terminal. First you should copy these lines of text and paste them into the terminal. Type in your password if prompted.

wget https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

sudo apt-get install libxss1 libgconf2-4 libappindicator1 libindicator7

sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb

And there you go, just look for chrome and you should be able to launch it no problem.

Good luck OP
>>
>>55742210
- open terminal and go to the package location
- type:
sudo dpkg -i package_name.deb

If apt complains about dependencies, just type:
sudo apt-get install -f

After that, chrome will be installed.

No, I really don't fucking care about the botnet. Nothing wrong with Chrome. It's my browser of choice so piss off cunts.
>>

Restart and try again. My guess is it's asking for your password in a window somewhere.
>>
>>55742353
I only said try Chromium because it will actually be in the repos if Chrome isn't

Chromium is literally chrome so I don't know why you're all uppity about it
>>
>>55742346
Could you see if you can install gdebi using the current software manager?

Once installed, try to install the chrome file you downloaded using gdebi. It should prompt you.
>>
>>55742280

>>
>>55742346
If the steps worked then chrome is installed. Search for it.
>>
>>55742346

>>
>>55742353
Someone suggested Chromium. That's not "botnet free Chrome." It's just a more convenient option for you because all you have to do is open the terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install chromium-browser

And life is good.

Firefox has both screen tearing and no support for Netflix and I heard Chromium has it's fair share of problems.

Chrome on the other hand just werks.

Ok I understand, but I still have that question mark on dock.
>>
>>55742398
Ok now, go to the chrome.deb file you downloaded if you did that is. And right click it and then open it using gdebi.
>>
>>55742403
This is why I want Chrome, it has never ever wronged me. My favorite browser hands down.
>>
>>55742403
>and I heard Chromium has it's fair share of problems.
Yet you are the only fair share of problem in this entire thread.

Stop being the problem. Do it, one goddamn line in the terminal, and actually try Chromium. See for yourself whether you hit any "fair share of problems." Don't make things harder on yourself by literally refusing to see for your own eyes whether vague rumors are true.

It's an operating system, not the Shi'ite ritual of self-flagellation with blades and chains.
>>
>>55742403
In my personal experience opera works better than Chrome on Linux
>>
>>55742411
Something is going wrong.
>>
>>55742406
So right click it and get rid of it. Fuck the question mark. Then start chromium-browser from the terminal and pin that to the dock once it's open.

>>

Man fuck Linux, what a pain in the ass.
>>
>>55742453
Open your terminal and enter the following:

dpkg -l | grep "chrom"

The response will be everything installed which has "chrom" in the name.

If you see any installed packages which look like they might be Google Chrome (like "google-chrome" or "chrome-browser" or something like that), run that command name in the terminal and see if Chrome opens.
>>

On Linux the best options are chromium or opera, or midori if you're on an old atom.

I use Ubuntu Unity and it's really this simple: >>55742306
>>
>>55742640

>>
>>55742617
That's necessary because the dependencies--the additional pieces of code which Chrome needs for its functions--are not packaged together with Chrome. Those can be installed manually first via apt-get, and then the Chrome .deb package can be installed via dpkg.

There's also a way to get apt-get to work dependencies after the fact:
>>55742306

That was the "one post."

There's also yet another way to do this, which is to add the Google Chrome repository ("PPA") for which there are instructions online. Then you can just tell apt-get to install google-chrome-stable and it'll go fetch it itself.

>>
>>55742657
The simplest way is to update the system to allow the system to sync with the repos and then download the chrome .deb, double click and install.
In some ways it's similar when you lack some .NET framework bullshit and you have to install it prior to the desired software.
Of course mentally damaged people like OP will have inmense trouble learning something new.

You have 16GB of RAM, right? I guess that because I see a 16GB partition. Ubuntu will automatically try to create a swap partition for you which is the same size as your RAM.

16 = swap
34 = ubuntu
NTFS stuff = windows, obviously

Try doing the df -h thing in Ubuntu so you can see how that displays this same information.

that's not how linux works, you need multiple partitions for shit to work

it splits your drive into partitions for personal data, boot data, and swap space, along with other shit.
>>
>>55742740
Swap isn't "space for you." It has a specific function for a Linux system. You should go look up what swap partitions are all about in order to understand why Linux made one for you.

The "other 30" is your space. It's where Linux lives and where it expects you to save files and stuff.

The remainder is what was left for Windows.

Sure enough, Chrome isn't on the repos. I know it was removed from the Debian open-source repos, but that's still odd.

OP, I've never used chrome, but suggest running the following command:

sudo dpkg -r -P chrome chrome-browser

The first thing you want to do is get that binary off of your system, because something probably went wrong during installation.

Make sure your packages are up to date. Run:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -y

Reboot, try reinstalling, and see what happens.

I can see why everyone hates this board. This is a simple problem which very few people seem to have provided a solution for.

I'm glad you got it working.
In terms of the desktop environments, I'd say that the default, Unity, is the most stable and requires the least amount of configuration. Unity used to be horrendously unstable to the point of being unusable when they released it as the default DE several years ago. But they've really straightened it up since then and using it is quite nice. I use it myself, because I can't be arsed spending 10 minutes fiddling with configuration files just to plug in an extra monitor.

If that doesn't rock your boat, I'd recommend GNOME 3 or MATE.

I've included an email in the header to which you're welcome to send me questions if you'd like. I've been down the same painful, frustrating path as you, so I'm always willing to help a fellow anon.

I shouldn't be feeding the trolls, but isn't Linux supposed to be all about choice? Then why are you criticizing the poor chap just because he wants to do things his own way, instead of just leaving him alone and ignoring this thread?
>>
>>55743689
Legend. I definitely will message you.

Everyone post desktops lol!
>>

This.
Ubuntu is still the best distro for beginners.
It just wercks.
>>
>>55743632
That's the beauty. There is no "perfect desktop". Install a couple of others, give them a try. Find what environment you like best. Here's a starter list of a few environments that are well supported:

Gnome
Mate
Cinnamon
KDE
XFCE

Most of my experience is with Gnome (and it's past versions), KDE, and now Cinnamon. I personally prefer Cinnamon. I wish I could like KDE anymore, but I can't stand it's design for some reason.

Have fun!

>>55743657
Sorry, I tend to feel the same way, so I'm going to break it to you politely.

This is 4chan. No. People are allowed to be assholes here. That's a big part of default anonymity, people can say what they really want.

This guy gets it.

Why do we even have that sticky up if autists keep posting shit

So this is so horrendous compared to all the useless and repetitive shit which gets posted here on a continual basis? Seriously, why the fuck are you so autistic about this?
>>
>>55743738
I love Cinnamon! I have seen it on Fedora and it looks pretty good.
Wouldn't mind trying it, maybe I can give it a go in the near future.
Thanks.

Huehuehuehue you're trying to get a rise out of me? 4chan killed my credulity before you were even old enough to leave home without a curfew.

Seriously, I get that new people come and go but let's nip the conceit in the bud. The internet is not one big social media platform. Learn how to share the space with others and recognize their preferences, even if you don't respect them. Hating them for not offering what you expect befits the pic you chose.
>>
>>55743830
What are you on about? If you want to talk about conceit of spaces, anyone is free to post or ignore threads as they choose, this isn't about anyone's space. It's not like anyone is forced to pay any attention to it. If he were screaming for attention in the /dpg/ I just might agree with you, but he's not.

No spring chicken, you say? In that case please, just, get real already. Here's a cute /c/ picture to help cure your butthurt.
>>
>>55743767
Even further, if you are looking for slightly more stable and polished, but basically Ubuntu, try Mint. Default desktop is Cinnamon or Mate. I've been using Linux for 10 years, now, and I'm running them on my Desktop and Laptop, because I'm sick of the whole "compile everything" bullshit. It isn't worth the hassle anymore. Besides, if you know what you're doing, any Linux distribution can be made into whatever you want.

For my user interface systems, Mint is the closest to my ideal. Debian is extremely stable, and very reasonable for a small server. If you have an extra system, or a virtual machine, I'd recommend running Debian to learn a little more. You can always check out memeOS (Arch) later, or Gentoo, or Slackware, or anything else. No reason you can't take small steps and learn at a comfortable pace.

>>
>>55743890
Gentoo really is a chore, are there any distros based on Gentoo that are already compiled and shit? Also what do you think about Manjaro?
>>
>>55743976
The only benefit of Gentoo is that you can compile it to meet your specific needs.

A pre-compile would defeat the purpose.
>>
>>55743989
True
>>
>>55743976
Not certain if there are Gentoo-derived distros actively out there. Never tried Manjaro, honestly. I just know that it's based on Arch. If you want a place to see which distros have the most page hits, check out distrowatch.org. It's a shitty site by today's design standards, but it's still useful. It lists distros by popularity, as well as has some useful information about each one.

You shouldn't be asking questions like this. dear anon.
1. wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | sudo apt-key add -
2, sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main" >> /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list'
3. sudo apt update && sudo apt install google-chrome-stable
(or google-chrome-beta or -unstable)
>>
>>55742453
Restart your desktop environment: do a re-login
>>
>>55742308
the command:
sudo apt-get
works fine

Your getting the unable to locate package error because its not called "chrome" You have to install the google-chrome-stable package not "chrome"
