Not him, but from my understanding is that a bunch of big contributors weren't happy with what was happening with owncloud and made their own fork called nextcloud. I think nextcloud is going to eventually replace owncloud like how libreoffice replaced openoffice.

just a simpler setup to sync my shit with a server in my control.

use it on a vps, so maybe they are snooping on my shit, but can't really afford a server in-house right now. easy tradeoff for me to do.
