The best book for learning C as your first language is thus:

Unfortunately it's one of the few books NOT on offer in the gentoomen library.

I actually like this tutorial, just because he generally mentions stuff more directly than most others. Also, he starts people with direct code copying before asking them to complete problems, rather than "program this even though you never seen the actual syntax for it".
