Somebody redbull me on OpenBSD
Can I throw it at any junk laptop and expect it to work? I don't care about graphics card drivers or obscure peripherals or anything like that. I'm just talking about having a workable core system.

Depends, do you have nvidia or broadcom shit?
If not, chances are it might work.
You'll probably be fine.
As the other poster said, Nvidia sucks for Unix users.

I think NetBSD has more "universal compatibility."

Go to sleep.

I tried it on a Core Duo X60 forever ago and it would freeze about a minute after logging in and starting X. Worked fine on my C2D X61 though, but I didn't really like it since for some reason the X server couldn't display applications running on Solaris hosts.

I think NetBSD just tries to be able to boot on a lot of different architectures, doesn't mean it runs well on them.

this, netbsd targets the embedded market, and there's no better way to prove that than porting it to everything under the sun

If I wanted compatibility I'd use Linux.
I'm interested in OpenBSD specifically.

It will most likely work, but if you use it on the go itt won't be as comfortable as Linux distros unless you write your own scripts to control wifi.

Get a FreeBSD.
OpenBSD loves to panic for many reason.

well it's as easy as creating a text file and putting the wi-fi info in it

Just switch to Linux already
