Windows can professional programs and support.
Games
And always latest drivers from any devices.

This is why it will always be much more serious OS than linux toy. You losers will fail to admit this though so keep being being obnoxious and delusional faggots as usual.

The Linux kernel has drivers for 99% of devices without any need to download. Windows has to run a potentially harmful every time someone wants to use a webcam.
>>
>>55727874
Keep being delusional and obnoxious.
Shifting goalpost.

>>55727898
You faggots will have drivers when someone decides to make support. There is no day 1 support for the most part. If you think linux is safe you are being delusional.

Linux will never be mainstream because it is fucking flawed and "just works" doesn't apply to it. I don't know if there has ever been a case when you installed linux and everything worked 100% it's always back to writing commands like some retard. Writing fucking lines instead of gui in 2016. Like how far can you guys have head up your ass seriously?
>>

I am, at this EXACT MOMENT sitting at a system (at work) which uses an AMD graphics card and guess what? Windows can't use it correctly. We had to switch to Windows a few months ago, because of a two-factor authenticator contract, and them (that company) only officially supporting Windows.

Now, we can't get proper fucking resolutions. Thanks, Windows. Yes, the drivers are the most recent. All 6 monitors are identical, yet Windows can't detect or set the proper fucking resolutions. We're limited to 720p on all screens. What a shitty system. Under Linux, everything worked perfectly. Also, it resets and disables screens on every reboot, login, and logout. Thanks, Windows.

Also, last I checked, most Linux distros (not some faggot-ass shit meme like Arch or Gentoo) work perfectly out of the box with most modern hardware. Windows, on the other hand, has nothing but extra installation requirements and issues.

That's my point. Posts prior to mine did the same thing. I'm saying that there is a lot of hardware and a lot of software out there, and, especially considering industrial uses, it's inaccurate to assume that your own experiences with combinations of them are an accurate indicator of the overall trend or potential functionality. I've also had good experiences with Windows, but I was contrasting to prove a point, nothing more.

It's better, and it's only practical for the upper class and a few fanatics.

Windows is like fast food. It's cheap, it's accessible, it's everywhere, it's what your cubicle monkey life relies on. It's "serious food for serious people" because you're a desk monkey and use excel.

To put a \ or / in a filename I had to hex edit the filesystem. That's the only one I've posted that involved using a hex editor.

Oh and obviously don't hex edit your actual disk, you'll fuck your Windows. Win10 can create and mount VHDs from diskmgmt.msc.

\\ means \ as \ is the escape character in programming.
If you're coding something that has to do with Windows paths you could use \\
It's not a problem in linux as it uses / so there's no need for escaping.

Though only retards don't realize windows interprets / just fine.

So
C:\\Windows\\system32
and
C:/Windows/system32

are just 2 ways of showing the same path.

>>
>>55728743
#1: organic tends to be worse for you
#2: Windows is expensive.
#3: My business prefers Linux, because reliability and function. Also, our fucking graphics cards. They make me a bit grumpy.

Although, to be fair, we don't use spreadsheets, much, but Libre Office or Open Office have done just fine for us in the past. We use a lot of remote desktop protocols and proprietary SCADA interfaces.

The fanatics thing I'm almost okay with. There are just enough "commoners" (couldn't help it) using it now that that isn't a fair assessment, anymore.

>>55728793

>>
>>55728837
You didn't show your explorer making those folders
>>
>>55728799
Literally no. The Linux kernel is barely Unix. It's not even based on Unix but its api is mostly a clean house implementation. Even most of the modern parts of the Linux kernel don't follow Unix standards because Unix doesn't belong in modern tech.
>>

Mate, Red hat always changes suttle shit to make it more robust. However this creates issues when trying to adapt to it.

Once you do it working it will work forever. You must also think about the programmer, for example: I have never had something not work after using programming best practices and experience to make something.
Red hat is still a system that takes programming to run operations. If you fuck up the programming, don't blame the system.

As far as I can tell, 10 runs faster on 8.1 on this reasonably fast laptop. Though when I tried 10 on an oldish netbook with a potato CPU, 4 GB RAM and some random 5400 RPM HDD, 8.1 was definitely faster at everything than either 7 or 10.

As a Linux user and programmer I was shocked on how fast it is. So areas still are buggy but the overall experience is outstanding. Makes some slow HDD seem fast.
>>

The worst part is that I can confirm. I've used amd early when I started assembling my first pc, and this shit pissed me of. For some reason AMD is more expensive in my country, so I've never had to frustratingly deal with catalyst software.

Honestly, Windows has matured into a decent operating system. I just prefer Linux overall, and use Windows when I have to or when I have software I want to use that is exclusive. Which, now that I don't really game anymore, really doesn't happen. I've completely abandoned Windows, and everything has gotten easier. I've not had to search for any Windows-like software or anything.

That being said, I liked Windows 10 over previous versions of NT-based Windows. Of course, though, win9x is godmode. Except for ME.
>>
>>55729457
Honestly 8.1 is at least as fast on more limited machines, and 10 is only marginally faster on high spec PCs. 8.1 is also overall a good deal less quirky provided you don't care about Metro crap and replace the dumb start screen with Classic Shell or similar.

Most of what's making me like 10 enough to keep it is the added features like native virtual desktops, corner snap, the ability to type decent emoji, etc. I'm keeping a backup of my old 8.1 and will be going back if updates start fucking me over though.

You obviously never programmed on it or ran anything very buggy.

It maps the OS kernel's memory into every process's address space. Writable. At address 0, where it will mask null pointer bugs and make null pointer writes destabilize the system.

What?
Issues, perhaps I accept having a different set of programmers, business models, and system goals as being good. Linux has the server side, windows has the user side.

I never said I had issues. I just work as a linux engineer and enjoy having a system that does not feel like I am at work and working on a project.

One of the first things I do with a new gaming build is install win95 as a joke, and actually get shit running. It's pretty difficult with modern hardware. I've got all sorts of old archived program versions to get it online. Haven't been able to get the resolution right in years, though.

TLDR; win9x sucks but is a fun challenge

Yeah, this shit doesn't work. Trust me, and every other IT person who has tried. On this particular topic, Winblows sucks. My whole point is neither is inherently better, but each excels at it's own thing. I was just being a dick about it by showing that the early anti-Linux complaints could be met with similar bitching.

I'm sure we could get the company to replace the machines eventually, but we were taken over a few months ago, and are in the middle of integration. We are an important service the company offers, but the pencil-pushers (HR) keep telling our bosses that they can't have any money. They just signed a huge contract tripling our load, while not hiring more staff (we're at our limit, already) or improving our tech (and we're out of screen real estate). And the job requirements scale almost linearly.

They're DLL components packaged and meant to be used by explorer. Without them explorer wouldn't work. Just because they're not apart of the executable doesn't mean shit. It's like saying MSHTML.DLL isn't apart of Internet Explorer, it's just meant to help other applications leverage functionality.
>>
>>55729614
Mostly because of me using trickery to get around win32's idiotic legacy DOS file naming restrictions. Until I had to demo making the invalid-name files directly in Explorer, I was using Linux to make them on a Samba share.

I like both, but in many ways Windows wins for desktop usability. Still doesn't stop me cursing it every time I have to do stupid service and driver incantations to make my VMs' virtual networks work again. That was never a problem under Linux.

any DE with a terminal emulator, or no DE at all can do this.
Also creating network shares is extra easy if you use nautilus-share, basicly every distro offers you to encrypt your data at install and you can do it later with for example gnome-disks that is default on ubuntu, or any other gnome based DE.
Quotas require installing 1697KB of data in one package to work ,and have textfile based configuration, but since this is an network tool i dont see the problem.
About previous versions - what the fuck is this and how does it work.

we like having small file explorers and small external tools or plugins. And you asked about DE not file manager:
>name one Linux based OS that has a DE that can do all this out of the box
>>
>>55729751
>loss of power over updates
>loss of power over driver installs
>loss of power over telemetry/spying
These are the annoyances. You can work around most of them without that much work if you know what you're doing. The update and driver stuff is there to make things just work for users who don't know computers and just want to get to facebook. Telemetry gives them an idea of how many users use a given thing and helps prioritize what to make better or place more prominently -- but they're too opaque about what they're doing with it and what they're collecting.

>defaults to disabling system restore and disabling safe mode on boot so you're fucked if one of the above goes wrong
And this is just dumb. No idea why they set it like that. Safe mode isn't too hard to get to though. You hold shift when clicking restart, or if it won't boot at all, just let it fail twice and it'll ask. F8 doesn't work anymore because it boots too damn fast, which is usually a good thing.

But apart from the few bad things, it's a fast and easy to use system that mostly takes care of itself unless you make it not do so.

There are more ways than that to get to safe mode.

I think the issue comes when you look at "external tools". Do you consider applications which have been integrated, or strictly file browser? Or are you including just external applications linked oob?

Sometimes you need to use an old program, or want to run an old game. A new Windows 10 computer can run an amazing amount of 1995 software without serious issues. And I've run old 16 bit Windows games from before that on 32 bit Windows 10.

On any other system you'd be lucky to get anything that old to compile without serious source modification, never mind having the decades old binary just work.

I don't often use software that old, but sometimes I need it to read some old file or whatever, or when nothing has been made since that performs the task better. And I like to have the option to run it when needed.

I have had some luck though getting 16 bit programs to run in Wine on 64 bit Linux, and I've seen some 32 bit Windows programs that work fine under Wine but just die in modern Windows. Still, Windows seems to do better overall at running old Windows programs.
>>
>>55729999
I mostly agree, with the exception that dealing with version conflicts for out of date software is something that is dealt with frequently enough to have a functional system implemented under Linux. This is especially true for software development and industrial applications, which are frequent applications of Linux in the professional world. I will say, though, that it takes at least a minuscule comfort with the command line to do right, so it's not something that most new users could do early on, but I'd imagine that getting some old software to work under newer Windows can present similar challenges.

Actually, now that I think about it, both are probably equally difficult to work with for outdated software, just in different ways.

Yeah, I really hope whatever IT guys they replace our original ones with realize this. With the new contract, we're going to need enough screens to monitor and interact with SCADA interfaces across 25 remote connections simultaneously.

Yeah, maybe they'll let us do it? The company that bought us is really big on multitasking and everyone having their own project. Maybe MY project could be getting this shit up to spec. Fuck, that would be nice.
