Hey guys, my problem is that I sometimes don't recieve pictures

What country are you in?

What about calls, do they work?

Does it have storage access (sdcard?) permission? What about space?

WhatsApp currently uses the Signal protocol for messages and a particular instantiation of the Noise protocol framework (Noise Pipes as in 1.0 using 25519_AESGCM_SHA256) for the server communication/transport protocol. Session keys/STRP master secrets for media and voice chats are sent over Signal.

What this probably means is that your phone is not able to retrieve the encrypted blob that has the encrypted media attachment from WhatsApp's hosted blob store. It might not be able to access it because it's blocked, or limited (Noise will mean it is blinded, but IP addresses of the servers used for the blob stores can still be rate-limited or blocked - or maybe the CDN sucks and is down in your area?).

The transport protocol used by WhatsApp doesn't yet try to evade blocking like that; you would need what I'm currently nicknaming WhiteNoise (blinded, IND-CCA2 Noise pipes) or BlackNoise (WhiteNoise over a protocol masquerading, steganographic layer) for that, plus of course a lot of IP addresses and metadata protection. I don't think WA have any plans for that right now, although if judges in Brazil keep fucking around with things, maybe their plans might change.
