I'm considering switching from my 2013 rMBP 13" to a Thinkpad W520 and I have a few questions. Has anyone had any experience installing Linux on this? How friendly is the hardware for that?
Also, is the screen any good? I can handle a lower resolution (I actually prefer 1080p) but I'm worried the color will be really bad, like most cheap laptops. Is this the case?

I have a T500, not a W520, but you oughta be fine. Part of the reason thinkpads of that era are liked is that Linux generally just werks. Only thing I had that didn't just werk was the SD card reader. Big deal, I bought a USB one.
I think the screen is fine in terms of color, but idk how picky you are about that, I'm not.

>but I'm worried the color will be really bad
If you're coming from a memebook you can only go up.
I have a w520. Thinkpads, especially non skylake models are very friendly when it comes to installing linux. As far as the screen, Thinkpads are generally known for having mediocre screens, but coming from a ips Dell ultrasharp to the w520 it wasn't that bad at all. The w520 1080p screen actually has slightly better color accuracy and viewing angles that its t420 counterpart.

I've run Linux on my work laptop W520 for about five years. W520 works great with Linux.
I never bothered with the fingerprint reader.
I never bothered with the dual GPU thing either. My W520 has both NVIDIA and Intel GPUs, and I guess under Windows there is some mechanism to switch between them. I just disabled the Intel one in the BIOS.
There is some support for this (look up "optimus" and "bumblebee"), but I'm not sure how well it works. When I set up the machine it didn't look stable enough... if it was my personal laptop I would have given it a try.
The W520 is the last one to have a good keyboard.
Can't speak to the color... mine has a 1440x900 screen, but I 99% of the time I used it plugged into a dock with dual 1920x1200 montiors.
Hope this helps.

Well you guys didn't really answer my second question, but I'm sure I can overlook it for Linux compatibility. Thanks for the info!

Seconding the screen for this one. Haven't used Linux on my W520 yet, but I'm enjoying it quite a bit so far on wangblows.

What the fuck is with your thread title?
Would a Lenovo Yoga 3 i7 have any issues with linux? Just thinking about its touch screen display, havent ever tried linux properly but I want to try, maybe pick up a 750GB ssd and dual boot it

Hopefully you have given this some thought but you are exchanging a pebble with a brick. Think weight and size. Not that that is necessarily bad just beware that a W520 is hardly a 'I'll just whip this out and sit with it comfortably in my lap' machine. I have an Elitebook 8560W which is comparable in size and weight and sometimes I feel it is a bit too bulky for lap-browsing.
But welcome to the mafia buddy ;)

W520's 1080p panel has 95% gamut which is actually damn good, and even the viewing angles are great for TN
It's the T420, or the non-FHD screens for T520/W520 that have the notoriously terrible screen

is that the stock image meme man?

Fuck, I wasn't paying attention. I guess you know OP browses /co/, now.
>>55695937
No, that's not hide the pain harold.

Thanks! that's just the kind of info I was looking for.

The W520 is actually not so heavy or massive that the device itself is non-portable. What makes it hard to use on the go is the ridiculous 170W AC adapter. That thing is a real fucking brick, especially compared to the 90W adapters that are more than enough to power any non-W series Thinkpad.

W520 here. Not a regular /g/ user, so I've only dabbled, but I tried a Fedora dual-boot a while back. Worked all right, but never could get it to play nicely with the pre-existing graphics card,
Im sitting next to a ~2013 rmbp that im trying to unfuck and a W520 that I have configured as our Design Studio laptop/floating workstation.
The Macbook has a slightly better screen if you like glossy but if you like matte you will find the W520 screen to be fantastic, great color, great viewing angles.

I'm not as worried about the texture as I am of the saturation. Even some glossy laptops I work with have had really bad color. rMBP is the only laptop I've seen good for this.

>Linux generally just werks
Except for suspend/hibernate on any linux above 4.1
>>55701679
I'll write you a hibernate program for 100$

Will you suck my dick for 100$?

Yeah, probably
