ITT: God tier hardware that aged well

Yes the GTX 480 is a space heater, but if you bought one of those bitches in 2010, you've still got a better gaming machine than a console.
>>
X58 and X79-chipset motherboards in general are still pretty decent if you pair them with overclockable Xeons,X5670 for X58 and E5 1650 for X79
>>
Best card for when you're stationed in Siberia
>>

I bought one recently lol. Does anyone know of a 1366 dual cpu mobo with sli so I can get another?
>>
>>55677177
I thought SLI/CF was chipset agnostic nowadays. I've got a Supermicro X8DAI but no 2 compatible gpu's to test with.

I'd recommend that evga abomination, but good luck getting one that works and doesn't cost billions.

i5 2500k
>>
>>55677177

EVGA SR2,you can also overclock with it,friend of mine still has one with 2 X5670:s at 4.2 ghz each, same cinebench results as Xeon e5 2670 v3,about 1700 cpu points if i remember correctly

The 7970, considering AMD rebranded it twice

Twice? Did they? I thought that the only twice rebrand was the 7850. It became a R9 270, then an R7 370.

I7 870, gtx 680.

My pc still runs games on high or ultra, 1080p.

Just got a 1440p monitor though so its not enough, should I go for the gtx 1070?
>>
>>55677693
I'd upgrade from Nahalem before getting any new cards.

A 2GB HD 5870 was probably one of the best if you didn't mind lowering settings these past couple of years.
>>
>>55679114
Seriously, so glad I got a 290 back then. People were laughing at the housefire but who's laughing now? Not going to fall for the Pascal meme either.
>>
>>55677693
I got the exact same cpu but a gtx 660, I bought a 6700k and 1070, so this should technically last another 5 years +
>>
>>55679036
2500k has aged well. Desktop processor development has been crap for the last 5 years as everyone is making mobile and phone shit. There's more efficiency but only marginally more power, not even worth upgrading if you get a good cooler for your CPU and overclock it.
>>
>>55679304
Can confirm. Have an i7 2600k OC'd to 4.7Ghz and it can still hang with all modern titles. Literally no reason to upgrade.
>>
gtx 260 and core 2 duo e8400 here. Still running fine.

I can play minesweeper in ultra at 60 fps so I'm all good.

but the 7870 is as good as a 780 now.
Are you claiming the 480 is as powerful as a 780?
>>
>>55679187

Same here. I'm waiting for Vega (or whatever the next AMD flagship will be).

Got one of these 5850s back in the day at a very reasonable price.
Mined BTC and shitcoins like a champ. Fond memories.

Any WD Black drive.

Compared to any other HDD marketed towards home users, these things are godly. I have 3x640GB disk from 2008 in my server, and 3x1tb disk from 2011 in my desktop. Each set has been in RAID5 since I've owned them and they have never had a fault.
>>
>>55680145
WD Black drives are the best, I've got an old scorpio laptop drive from 2010 that I still back my shit up on via USB.
>>
>>55677045
I had a 2500k which I sold.
I bought an 6700k.
>regrets
My 6970 burned out.
I bought a 280x and temporary replacement.
>temporary
>still runs everything perfectly today.

I think about buying an RX480. AMD cards tend to age alot better than Nvidia's.

Also tempted to buy a 1080 but It'll be outdated too fast for the price point.

Tahiti really was a fucking top-tier GPU. People still happily rocking not only 7970s, but 7950s as well, and Vulkan is going to give it another few years of life. Too bad so few people have access to a 7870XT (Tahiti LE) because I'd like to see how Tahiti in its weakest incarnation holds up.
>>
>>55680336
I had a 7970. Was a good card for the most part, especially at the prices you could get them for. Even better, they released a bios update for all the cards to upgrade them to ghz edition cards for free.

7870 Myst here, paired with 2500k. Still holds well playing Dragon's Dogma...
>>
Any hawaii card counts really. It is looking to dethrone the 7970 as the most future proof gpu ever built. Nearly 3 years of top tier performance and in some DX12 titles (and I guess doom's vulkan) its now approaching a goddamn 980ti - that is roughly 3 entire tiers of performance increase for the silicon (4 if you overclock it in such receptive games and get within reach of a stock 1070).

Still using my i7 920 today, I was torn at the time of buying but I'm so glad I did. I'll be replacing it in the next five years almost certainly though, and my 920 will be relegated to media or maybe server duties

i5-2500k turbo clock 4.2 ghz + MSI GTX 580 Lightning. Still doing pretty well.

No, those parts are quite cool when idle.

The GTX 480 is called a space heater for a reason, that thing would go hard all the time.
