Like a retard I bought a new motherboard with that fits lga1150 chips, but my current cpu (i5 3470k) is lga1155.
Is it worth it to upgrade to an i7 4790k so it will fit, or should I ship the mobo back and look for something else?

Depends on what you're doing. Do you need the extra threads? Clock per clock, its not really a big jump. If you utilise all threads, it can be.
