Will desktops still be a thing for mainstream consumers in 10 years?
I imagine only hardcore gamers, professionals who need high-end hardware, and autists will still need desktops at home.
Hopefully not. Then desktops become a thing for nerds again where all owners are shunned by society. Feels good, can't wait.

>becomes a niche market
>becomes over expensive like a mechainical keyboard vs an entry rubberdome from the bestbuy next door.

That being said, I can't wait to have a device like pic related going mainstream.
Finally we'll be able to install arch on smartphones.

Depends on how well VR does, but at worst we will see the desktop market overlap with server hardware, which would be pretty neat.
I know people that have never owned or even used a desktop / laptop. face it anons, they're essentially dead except for hobbyists.

The industry wants to push VR as a compelling "experience" to keep selling hardware. We've been in the era of good enough computing for years. Most people use computers to consume media, browse the web, and use a messenger. They don't need much processing power to do that.
Making everything an "enhanced experience" by shoving VR into everything then making it mandatory will sell newer more powerful hardware.
Get ready for VR presence Skype, VR 3D web browsing, VR 3D movie players, VR social media. All coming to a dystopia near you as standard features where old 2D interfaces are no longer supported.
desktops aren't going anywhere
laptops will be phased out due to phones
