Simple question thread

>I'll start

I have lines in my vimrc that converts all tabs to spaces
Makefiles use tabs as separators

Does me being a space-indent fag make me unable to into makefiles?

Are there any solutions beside editing my vimrc every time / firing another text editor for the sole purpose of makefiles?
>>
I'm really really bad at organizing my projects and directories so any advice would be appreciated.

I made a web service that has an Android app that connects to it. Right now they are part of two different git repositories. I have one repository for the web component, and one repository for the Android app component. Is this stupid? Should I make one repository for the entire thing, and just make one directory for the web component, and another directory for the Android app component?

Thank you all in advance.

Since the Pokemon Go craziness got me hard, and since it drains battery like crazy because you need to keep it open, enable gps/mobile data, is there any application/xposed module that disable the screen while detecting if the phone is in pocket? Battery saver function from inside the game disables the map by checking the sensor, but doesn't disable the screen completely. I am searching for something like this. I want everything to run normally, but the backlight or the entire screen to be turned off.

Is there any way to get the "recently used" (or was it "recent places"?) location back in the new Firefox file browser for GTK DEs?

Pic related. There used to be a "Recently Used" button at the top left but it disappeared after an update a while back (I guess during the transition to GTK 3). I was hoping it would be restored in some future update but so far it hasn't been, which is disappointing because I used it a lot.

I have a database file containing several example sentences and their translation in another language. So one column is in one language and the other column in the same row is the same sentence in another language.

I was wondering how difficult it would be to make this database accessible/searchable on my phone. If there exists some sort of portable server thing for Android (like XAMPP) I could probably fairly easily make a browser-based interface for doing this, but I'm wondering if it's easier to develop a program for the phone (i know nothing about android development) suggestions?

Wait, in my rush to make this post I forgot that it still shows up when you want to select a file to upload (although it hardly shows any folders compared to the old file browser, it only seems to show folders that have recently been created as opposed to recently accessed), but it's never present when you want to save a file for some reason (I suppose that has something to do with what I just mentioned about it not showing recently accessed folders but only recently created ones).

I'm trying to do a Reverse Polish Notation Calculator (3 4 + is equal to 7), and I've been running into a problem. I have a function that keeps track of the location of the spaces in a string (in a vector) and the location of the operators.

void RPNEval()
{
std::vector<int> spaceVec = {0}; //Stores spaces (which are used to deliniate different numbers);
std::vector<int> tokenVec; //Stores locations of tokens to use in an RPN calculation
for(int i = 0; i < inputString.length(); i++)
{
if(inputString[i] == ' ')
spaceVec.push_back(i);//Places spaces' positions in a vector
if(inputString[i] == '+' || inputString[i] == '-' ||inputString[i] == '*' || inputString[i] == '/')
tokenVec.push_back(i);//Places tokens'(+, -, *, /) positions in a vector
}
int i = 0; //Keeps track of where the last space before a token is

for(int j = 0; j < spaceVec.size(); j++)
{
if(spaceVec[j] >= (tokenVec[0] - 1)) //If you find the last space before a token
{
std::cout << "/G/ IS THE BEST" << std::endl;
i =j;
break;
}
}
std::cout << "THIS IS A DEBUG CHECK, END INPUT = " << (i) << std::endl;

RPNInput numsToSum;

numsToSum.push_back(stringToInt ( inputString.substr(spaceVec[i - 1], inputString.length()-spaceVec[i]) ) );
std::cout << "THIS IS A DEBUG CHECK, END INPUT = " << (i) << std::endl;

numsToSum.push_back(stringToInt ( inputString.substr(spaceVec[i - 2], inputString.length()-spaceVec[i - 1]) ) );
//For some reason, this leads to i's value changing
std::cout << "THIS THE LAST DEBUG CHECK, END INPUT = " << (i);

In the above code, right before the last cout statement ("this is the last...") the value of i changes kind of randomly for no apparent reason... Any help is appreciated!

Anons are always recommending to create "Your own NAS server", rather than buying dedicated HW for that (i.e. qnapi, zyxel, WD, etc.).

For instance I'd like to have 5HDDs x 3TB (best price per TB now) combined into RAID5.
Plus another smaller disk for OS.

I need only two things to learn about here:
- what cases should I look upon?
- what mobo should I look into?

At the beginning I would implement it only on LAN. Too much security issues with opening it outside, as I would need to implement authentication on firewall / gateway.

20% of reviewers indicate a less than OK quality.
I want something that has AT LEAST 12 additional buttons I can use as macros.
Alternatively, where can I get a USB (or PS/2, if necessary) keyboard with 24 function keys?

I already have the UTechSmart Venus Gaming Mouse, but I need a keyboard with more keys. Preferably with macro keys on the left-hand side. That's what REALLY got me about this keyboard.

What do manufacturers even do when refurbishing disks?
I know how refurbished laptops looke like since i sell them, they replace broken parts, change battery to a new one and there it goes. I don't imagine it's very cost efficient to replace heads or something in a hard drive, then sell it below the market price of a new one.
Can't be simply hdds that someone returned without reason, those are usually sold as OEM or "warehouse surplus" for full price, there had to be something wrong with them.

>>
>>55651036
>I have lines in my vimrc that converts all tabs to spaces

This is sort of an idiotic thing to do, you could just use a mapping to do this.

If you really don't want to, then remove the hook in filetype/makefile.vim or whatever the filetype is called.

I have passwords ranging from 20--30+ characters, lol.

IDK what this dude is talking about that 16 is enough/overkill. I know one person (not a friend, just a guy I knew) who had a password just to his computer like 128 characters.

Although, DESU, most of my less-important sites only have about 6-10 characters. If I don't really care that much.

Also, my passwords are either made-up words or not in English.
>>

16 is fine unless you're Edward Snowden and your computer gets stolen. You should use a password manager anyways, then they can be as long as you want / the website allows.

Here's the problem: I want to move large files to a friend over dropbox. Let's say I want to move five files of 1.5 GB each.

I could use 7-zip (or similar) to split the file, then copy them one at a time into a folder, wait for my friend to copy it out, then notify me, then I delete the old file and copy in the next in the series, and so on. But that's a pain in the ass.

I want a tool that does exactly the above. One one side, it would split a file, then copy them in one at a time. On the other end, the same program would monitor the directory, copying out files as they arrive, deleting them, and notifying the other side that it's ready for the next one (communication via a file in the directory).

Does any such utility exist?

I asked this before but I want to ask again.

When I have a triple monitor setup my GPU will idle at 55 - 60c with the case fans turned on high with no GPU fan. With dual monitor my GPU will clock down unexpectedly and idle at ~40c with the case fans on low. What will the long term effects be on the longevity of the GPU between 40c idle and 55 - 60c and would it be better to have the GPU fan high enough to bring the temperature down to 40c even on triple monitor?

I've been reading and apparently mechanical wear is what you have to consider most but the ~55c idle temperature doesn't put me at ease.

Mind you when it's at 55c it's already clocked high so it barely ever goes above that, it's not like when I start doing something it shoots up to 80c. It's either 55c constantly or 40 - 55c between idle and load.

What is the standard practice of limiting a Linux program to only one instance? I have a Windows program that I patched so that I can run it multiple times and that used CreateMutex function combined with a static string as a name, now I'm trying to patch the same program for Linux but the lack of a tool like OllyDBG makes it hard, I've found a few calls to pthread_mutex_create but I'm not sure how to figure out what's passed as the param (as it is a structure), and if it's even related. Any hints?

And I'm telling you, you dont need such a program.

They either will:
1) Only allow one instance by default
2) The program will let you set a setting to prevent them from(vlc,mpd,mpv) from opening more then one instance.

Tell me your opinion on this /g/:

We are inches away from the digital age (I mean 100% digital age). We still live on vinyl, CDs, DVDs, and even cassettes. Which should tell you something. When america and most 1st world countries see the digital age, and you don't see cars with CD players but instead WIFI and android installed on the dash to login to things like Amazon music, Pandora, Youtube music and even spotify, then we will be in the digital age. Let's not forget USB thumb drives.

Every year a new gb chip comes out and it means nothing really, cause the last one will be 1/4 of the original price.They could release a 10TB hdd for 200 and make money off of it with out even trying. Most things like this don't cost as much as we think. Take Sam's for example. You can buy in bulk a case of Cokes for like 60 bucks, but induvidually like a 12 pack is like 4-5$. So the case is a better deal cause it's not as expensive as it looks to make. Marketing aint hard to figure out, it's about what how they work with it and when to release it, that's why you don't see the general populace using 1TB HDD's but something like a 500GB.

So by this logic I want to say that they could give it out to whoever needs it but you don't see it in places like Wal*Mart and Target or even Best Buy cause they realize that the current (and local normie) consumer has no reason for such a device as a 10TB HDD; if I read it right, it's been out close to 2 years, however, it's not been in normal consumer hands, but in places like Facebook, Google, Amazon, and more places like that. So my biggest question is, how soon are we to see something like this in stores?

This is my part of a conversation between a friend and I we are having, that is currently all me. But what I want to know, am I wrong and where if I am. What does /g/ think?

I doubt this will have a simple answer, but how do I troubleshoot a laptop that keeps shitting out and turning off on me?
No blue screen, beep, or any indication.

Just randomly crashes while:
a) using it
b) not using it
c) even if it's plugged into the wall, not using a battery. It's crashed while using it and while just sitting there, battery removed completely from the laptop.

It's a work computer (Lenovo thinkpad) and I don't want to turn it in, they just send it out and I get another piece of shit RMA computer, but its a last ditch effort if nothing else works.

I'm looking to upgrade and quiet down my rig a bit.

CPU - i5 3470S @ 2.90GHz
RAM - 8GB DDR3 1333MHz
GFX - GTX 650 :(((

The CPU seems okay at the moment for me, just need to buy a custom heat sync because the stock one is so fucking loud under load. An upgrade to the CPU seems pointless as for newer generations I'd have to buy a new motherboard and probably new RAM as well; for a decent bump in performance (but a lot of money spent).

RAM is fine, if I wanted to upgrade I'd have the same problem as well. DDR4 means new motherboard which means new CPU, which all means more money.

Current video card is absolute dog shit and I was wondering what would be the best non-reference GTX 1060? Not too concerned about performance, would just need to run okay on games with medium/high @ 1440p.

Also what's a decent 1440p monitor? Doesn't have to have g-sync/free-sync or any of that bs. Just look sort of sleek and be a good monitor.

128GB = 116GB and out those 20-25GB will be used in windows, and will grow, that leaves you with around 80GB, now install fundamental programs you might use and some that are must have, that leaves you with less than 70-60GB free for stuff.

User folder will create a lot of stuff eventually too (My documents, desktop, downloads, etc).

So yes, 128GB is not enough, for a reason everyone reccomends 240GB minimum unless its a facebook machine.

If you have a secondary hard drive then 120gb is fine. Just move your user folders to your HDD and consider installing some of your larger games/programs to it. People mostly fill up SSDs by putting unnecessary crap on them.

Thanks, that works. However there's a slight delay during which the urlbar is actually focused and it makes some kind of "flash". Guess I'll have to change my css after all.

Teracopy is a common one. If both your computers have gigabit ethernet then it's a pretty fast connection. If either of them are old you may need a crossover cable instead of regular ethernet.

Both pcs are relatively new, i will try with straight-through cable, hopefully i won't have to go to the store for crossover one. Too bad i don't have the tools to actually build one myself.

I can recommend the alumedic10, using it for around 10 years now.

some washing machines are programmable, so you can set a washing schedule.
you'd still have to load and unload it manually though.

What is the cheapest 14" or smaller laptop that can run WoW at respectable frames on lowish settings?

I don't know shit about laptop components, the last laptop I had was a couple years ago in college and it was just some like $300 13" laptop with integrated graphics I bought to type papers and take notes with... It could run WoW on low and all that, but only at like 10fps.

By respectable frames I don't mean 60fps+, I just mean like ~30, so just playable, nothing extraordinary.

Thanks

When I'm working on a (C++) project that links external libraries, where are they supposed to go? At the moment my folder structure is

myexternallibrary.h
|-lib

Is this a reasonable way of doing things? Part of me feels like I should install the library to somewhere on the system, but I can't for the life of my think of a way to query where libraries are installed on every platform.

I have my OS on an SSD, and just got a new HDD today, currently in the process of formatting it just to see if it works.
I'm planning on doing a system restore afterwards though, but the formatting is taking for fucking ever.
So my question is, if I system restore, do I have to format the HDD again? In which case I should probably just cancel this format and restore.

/g/ I had a strange incident happen today. I was playing EDF earlier and when I went to stopped I noticed that every program installed on my second harddrive in the folder I'd set aside for it had been uninstalled and deleted. Everything else on the computer had been untouched and that was it.

I thought it may have been a virus or rootkit or something and nothing really was brought up after scanning with rkill, tddskiller, malwarebytes, avast, etc. I thought it may have been an error with Windows 7, however, I can't really find anything about it either. I defrag the drive and ran a chkdsk /f and both came back with nothing. Literally the ONLY thing I can think of is that sometime yesterday the power went out for a bit while I was taking a nap and I'd left my computer on, but, I don't think that would of caused a whole folder to delete itself would it? So I'm just a bit confused. Why would that happen? I don't think it'd be something with the game since that sounds ludicrous to me. I have everything reinstalled now, but, it's still bothering me thinking about it.

Would any of you know what the issue would be?
>>

buy some incense and see what your airflow actually looks like. If it's not pushing air towards the GPU heatsink then the front fans won't help no matter how powerful they are.

full format (re)creates the file system itself and writes zeroes to all sectors. Quick format just takes an existing file system and recreates the file allocation table, kind of like deleting a pointer to an object without deleting the objects themselves.

Bad sectors - if your disk is damaged it can be formatted in such a way that the file system ignores damaged parts of the drive
Privacy - if you're selling a computer then a total wipe might be more appropriate, otherwise they can (kind of) recover your data
