I'm not entirely a noob with sound but should I worry about having a turntable. I know that I need a phone compatible speakers set and a preamp. Do any of you know if I should buy the vinyl rig if my budget of preamp, speakers and a turntable will be under $500. Should I also convert my vinyl records to .flac (or better lossless formats) later on.
To summarize all I need us a good brand for a turntable (preferably built in preamp) and good quality speakers.
Also can anyone tell me if smartphones can play .flac files?

Your questions are all over the place man...

It sounds like you're interested in collecting vinyl, ripping it, then using the digital copies as 'on-the-go' entertainment.

I'll simplify this for you... forget flac. Just rip 320kbps mp3s, especially if you are listening from a mobile device. Flac will only be beneficial if you're listening in an ideal environment with ideal gear, otherwise its pointless. You can lookup the differences between the two on a technical level, but I'm going to assume you'll be driving, working out, on the bus, walking etc... all environments can be noisy and distracting from the quality, so whats the point?

An average Flac file (roughly, but so many variables) will be be around 200mb each, while the same 320kbps mp3 will be 12mb. So enjoy rotating 20 songs on a regular basis if you choose flac.

That aside, whats your budget for the turntable etc? Once again so many variables here...

????????????????????
a typical song in FLAC is around 25-30 MB, only a full disc rip would use 200MB

Just get a "DJ" turntable, they have a USB connection for ripping by default.

A Pioneer turntable can be had under $300 on ebay used if you want high quality or you can get a Reloop/Omnitronic for under $100.
