That's not likely to happen to me, as I try to be aware of my surroundings and armed at all times.

If I ever do get caught by surprise, I assess the assailant's competence, by demeanor and weapon stance. If it's a hoodlum like mentioned in OP, I'm fairly confident in my ability to effectively disarm the perpetrator. Once disarmed, I pull my own weapon,(never attempt to use an unknown weapon, dunno if it's loaded with proper ammunition, well maintained, etc.) offer a fair, stern warning to fuck off and never try that again. Depending on the response, maybe call police ormaybe not. If the gun is actually loaded, take the magazine, and empty the chamber. Hand him back his gun, but keep magazine and ammunition.

If upon assessment, I'm not confident in my ability to disarm, attempt deescalate situation, if I can get him to lower his weapon, I raise mine, repeat initial strategy. If situation cannot be deescalated, give him whatever he asks for.
