Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

I thought you guys said lunix was more secure? I installed gentoo like you said and it asked if I wanted to install NSA selinux but i though only windows was backdoored?!?
>>
Guy using osx to ssh into centos here.

Tab complete now enabled - works for commands. I can just copy and paste the filenames in terminal though for now...
>>
Hacks for bash:

1.)
bind '"\e[5~": history-search-backward'
bind '"\e[6~": history-search-forward'

Usage example:
Type "vim" and use PGUP/PGDWN to cycle through all previous vim commands in your history.
>>
suggestion: go to http://www.shell-fu.org/lister.php?top and learn those commands.

some commands:
ctrl-r to find a command from the history
ctrl-a to go to the start of the line, ctrl-e to go to the end
ctrl-w to delete a word, ctrl-y to paste the word you deleted
>>
Hacks for bash:

2.)
bind '"ESC[Z": menu-complete'

Usage example:
Type part of a command and cycle through possible autocompletitions (like zsh) via SHIFT+TAB.
>>
>>55618766
>http://www.shell-fu.org/lister.php?top
btw, this should go in the OP IMO. these commands have been really useful for me. in bash, you don't need to type whole commands or press keys a hundred of time like a fucking retard
>>
Hacks for bash:

3.)
bind '"\em": "\eb\ed\C-y\e#man \C-y\C-m\C-p\C-p\C-a\C-d\C-e"

Usage example:
Quickly open the manpage for a command currently under your cursor (like zsh) via ALT+m.

Currently dd'ing a whole drive with status updates.

Here's the alerts my server is putting out.

I will post again shortly with a picture of DD status listening.

Am I correct in thinking that DD forces the drive to reread every time there is an error?

Is this basically going to kill the drive once it is done?

The drive has "problems" but most of it works (possible platter flaw?). If dd copies data will it always be the correct data?

If DD is unable to complete a block, what happens?

>Richard Stallman: Yes, that’s a very good thing. Snowden is a great hero. Three cheers for Edward Snowden.

>CIO Journal: Why, in your opinion, is he a hero?

>RS: Because he told us about the dirty things our government and other governments are doing to us secretly. There’s a famous question: who watches the watchmen? Now we know the answer. Whistleblowers like Snowden watch the watchmen if they can. This is why we must make sure it’s safe to be a whistleblower. If we want democracy, we must make it safe to be a whistleblower. But, that’s not easy to do with all the surveillance there is because the surveillance is used to identify whistleblowers.

Of course you can just get wine via apt-get or whatever package manager you like. The windows processes you want to run will need to be compiled for ARM though, that means most games wont work, however most win8 things will (see https://wiki.winehq.org/ARM for details)

ssh is just a protocol for controlling a remote shell. So gitting gud with it consits of installing a ssh client. The much harder part will be gitting gud with the shell running on the remote machine (bash is the most common one probably)

I've been trying a live iso of ubuntu and feel it does what I need, but now I want to install it to learn more and I'm wondering what would be the best way to distribute the files on my computer.

I have a 64gb SSD and a 500gb HDD. I look up in google but there are as many recommendations as there are results, so I'm not exactly sure of which one is the best for me. On Windows I had the OS and programs on the SSD, and my Users folder plus all my shit on the HDD, so I'd want something similar.

Is it fine to just use the default automated install, or is there a preferred way to go with the install?

>If you want to get rid of Windows and only have GNU/Linux on your computer:

This is my personal way of doing it, but by no means "the right way"

During install, choose to manually partition your drive
Make these partitions:
On your SSD
-100 MB EFI System Partition (if you're on UEFI)
-100 MB /boot partition with ext2 file system
-The rest of the free space on the SSD is assigned to an LVM physical volume

On your HDD
-Literally all of the free space on a single ext4 partition, which you can mount in a directory called /data or in /media/whatever, your choice

Proceed to configure LVM

-Create a volume group based on your LVM physical volume that you chose earlier. Name it myVG or whatever
-Create three logical volumes in said volume group
-30 GB volume for / (root) (name it myRoot or whatever)
-4GB or 8GB volume for swap (depends on how much RAM you have. some people prefer to not have a swap partition at all and just make it a file, that's fine too) (name it mySwap or whatever)
-the rest of free GB goes to /home (again, myHome or whatever)

Finish configuration of LVM

-When back on the partition screen, mark your 30 GB Logical Volume as / (root) and ext4 file system
-mark your swap LV as swap
-mark your /home LV as /home and ext4 filesystem

Continue with installation
When it's done, make "Documents", "Downloads", "Pictures", "Videos", etc folders in your /data (HDD) partition and symbolic link them to your /home ones, so stuff in those gets saved to your HDD and not your SSD.

Ta-da

Oh, and if you want to encrypt your system, it just takes one extra step. Mark your free space in the SSD as crypto, not as LVM, configure LVM on LUKS, and also encrypt your HDD if you want. Done

I should make this a copypasta now that I think of it. What do you guys think? Amidoinitrite?

/flt/ I have a question: how do you avoid artefacts when resizing windows- particularly complicated gtk applications like firefox?

I've used ubuntu in a few flavours, debian and now arch and with each I've used both i3 and openbox AND have used radeon, intel and geforce GPUs, all of which have artefacts when resizing windows to some extent (particularly when enlarging a floating window). A decent compositor, like compton, helps reduce the artefacts but they're still there...

Any ideas?

If someone has a backdoor for access to all data across the entire internet, then so be it. I just prefer to minimize my usage of proprietary shit, even if I can't 100% get away from it all.

I don't think many are at Stallman's level of proprietary/surveillance avoidance, even if we strongly agree with his writings/actions. I mean, look at this shit: https://stallman.org/stallman-computing.html
>A friend once asked me to watch a video with her that she was going to display on her computer using Netflix. I declined, saying that Netflix was such an affront to freedom that I could not be party to its use under any circumstances whatsoever.
>>
>>55623302
I whole-heartedly agree, but allow me to play devils advocate for a moment. For all intents and purposes I think you are wrong. In an age where false morals are a dime-a-dozen, true virtues are a blessing in disguise. We often put our false morality on a pedastal like a bunch of prima donnas, but you all seem to be taking something very valuable for granted. So I ask of you to muster up all the strength you can because it is a dog eat dog world out there. Although there is some merit to what you are saying it seems like you have a huge chip on your shoulder. In your argument you seem to throw in everything but the kitchen sink, and even though you are having a field day with this I am here to bring you back into reality. I have a sixth sense when it comes to these types of things. It is almost spooky, because I cannot turn a blind eye to these glaring flaws in your rhetoric. I have zero tolerance when it comes to people spouting out hate in the name of moral righteousness. You just need to remember what comes around goes around, and when supply and demand fails, you will be the first to go. Mark my words, when you get down to brass tacks, it doesn't take rocket science to kill two birds with one stone. It's clear who wears the pants in this relationship, and sometimes you just have to swallow your pride and accept the facts. You might have to come to this conclusion through trial and error but I swear on my mother's maiden name that when you put the pedal to the metal you will pass with flying colours like it's a piece of cake.

You modify your "morals" when they challenge your morals and you have no other option.

So you'll use a boat that has propritary GPS on it, even though you are against closed software.

So you'll make a poor man/women use propritary software when they go to give you a booking on a plane.

So you'll fly in a plane, even though it uses propritary software for everything in the cockpit.

I don't like proprietary software because:
- it has the potential to do malicious things without my knowing
- it promotes a divisive, selfish mindset (instead of a helpful, sharing one)
- I can't modify it for my needs or the needs of others
- it inherently gives the developer/owner power over the user through their control of the software
That doesn't mean I'm a hypocrite if I decide to use proprietary software. Sometimes the convenience outweighs the concerns. I'll still promote and use FOSS as much as possible.
> propritary hypocrit

Cool, thanks! Unfortunately I may be retarded because don't see any option for LVM anywhere, is something like this ok in its place?

SSD
efi -- 100mb
/ -- 30gb
/home -- 34gb

HDD
swap -- 8gb (same as ram, would I even need that much for normal desktop use?)
/data -- 492gb (for keeping my files using symbolic links)

From what I read, swap on the SSD may kill it rather fast. Does it help leaving it first on the HDD?

Some are better than none. You act like I use non-free all willy-nilly, which is false. I minimize it, and maximize FOSS.
>you personally source EVERY SINGLE PACKAGE that you install?
No, but I can check the code if I want, and anyone else is free to check it as well to find malicious code and remove it, or make a FOSS fork.
>you have no right to the code I created
Agreed. But you are displaying the selfish, divisive mindset that doesn't help benefit public knowledge.
>[do you even modify any of the software that you use?]
I have submitted issues, patches, and feature requests to various FOSS projects. Even if I don't make my own modifications, I like that others can do so.

Linus writes beautiful code. He has published some side projects that he wrote all on his own and the code is just wonderful. He also lives in the real world while still maintaining his open source ideals and supporting himself through his work.

RMS is basically a homeless loser who hasn't made any real contributions in the last 20 years. He is still super butthurt that Linux beet HURD (but hey, HURD just got basic sound support in 2016!) and basically tries to claim Linux because Linus used GCC and the GNU coreutils. He survives on the charity of others and speaking engagements where he spouts his insane, paranoid, philosophy. Basically he won't be happy until all the programmers are homeless hackers like him and all the companies are shut down. How people are supposed to support themselves and their families in that scenario aren't things he has to deal with because he is basically a permanent grad student. He does make some good points about privacy, but for him, there is no middle ground. Anything that may reduce your privacy even the slightest bit (like movie recommendations on Netflix) is evil according to him, and must be destroyed. In a lot of ways he show classic signs of mental splitting, which is a classic symptom of mental illness. To top it off, when he does write code, he does so in the style of the awful GNU style guide which is a crime against humanity IMHO.

So, in a nutshell:
He's a bird-fucking, self-absorbed, power hungry, toe jam eating pedophile that thinks everything should be free and everyone should be forced to share, who looks like he hasn't showered in years so as to create a static shield around his body to protect from aliens. He also created an OS without a kernel because he's basically Steve Jobs gone communist. Oh, and he calls himself doctor though he holds no PhD.

Linux alternatives are not trash, but you hardly can make good things with them. I used Dark table and Gimp for some months, it was a breath of fresh air when I moved to Photoshop. Also Kdenlive is an ant in comparison with Sony Vegas.

Yeah, I need them because the alternatives made me waste fucking time for nothing. If you were using them you knew.

We don't describe free software as an “alternative” to proprietary, because that word presumes all the “alternatives” are legitimate and each additional one makes users better off. In effect, it assumes that free software ought to coexist with software that does not respect users' freedom.

We believe that distribution as free software is the only ethical way to make software available for others to use. The other methods, nonfree software and Service as a Software Substitute subjugate their users. We do not think it is good to offer users those “alternatives” to free software.

>I had Office in virtualbox for some time but it's a pain to use it when you are in a hurry. Also I need Photoshop, Lightroom, Sony Vegas. I make money with these
you should have started by saying this.
yes, just don't use linux as your main OS, there is no need anyway
>>
>>55624982
The biggest advantages of Linux I saw are the browsing speed and the security. I somewhat miss the browsing speed but it's okay.
>>
>>55624972
When you find something usable like Photoshop or Sony Vegas, tell me. Until then, just give up.
>>
>>55625013
You have no idea what you are talking about.
>>
>>55625041
Yes I have. What do you mean? I'm not talking about other things that don't really make a difference for me.
>>

Gentoo, gentoo, gentoo everywhere

GNU, not Linux!
>>
>>55625063
Those advantages are not related to Linux.

How about GIMP? GIMP Is My Photoshop!
>>
Why are there so many kids in this thread today?
>>
>>55625136
No Linux.
>>
>>55625125
Maybe you are right.
>>

No Linux, no GNU.

You could tell me: why are you here today?

Summer.
>>
>>55625140
I used Gimp. It's good for basic editing but if you want quality find something else.
>>
>>55625164
Windows 10!
>>
>>55625171
I used to like helping people.
>>
>>55625177
I'm legitimately curious, what does Photoshop offer besides hardware acceleration that Gimp doesn't have?
>>
>>55625177
What is "basic editing"?
>>
>>55625182
The best :) really liking it. I'm waiting for the anniversary update
>>
>>55625186
Me too. And be helped. But sometimes it's funny to play.
>>
>>55625192
Usable UI, sane options, improved tools, smooth things, layer options, non-destructive editing, support for Nik Collection (Google made it free and it's one of the best things I ever used) + many other things. Gimp's development is slow as fuck. You can't use it for a job, you will lose your mind.
>>
>>55625228
Well, I don't care then. I'm able to do all sorts of editing I need for social movements and to play with my photos. That's all I need.
>>
>>55625192
Nothing, people are just to lazy to learn a new program. If you know python or lisp, GIMP is pure Zen with it's scripting features. For modeling blender is #1.
>>
>>55625228
I think Gimp has had mask support for a while now.
>>
Just installed LxQt

What is the best search tool like xfce-whiskermenu serach or GNOME/Cinnamon search?
>>
>>55625228
You clearly never used GIMP longer than 20 seconds.
Fuck off finally pajeet.
>>
>>55625247
It's not bad for basic editing. It's just not good for advanced things. I'm glad it works fine for you, consider donating if you can, I did.
>>
>>55625287
No, I used it for a month when I went full FOSS. I don't want to do that again.

>I don't want to have to spend a day fixing a bad upgrade

If you're trying to avoid bloat then this won't happen. I've had the same Arch system running for 2 years with no bad breakages and plenty of productivity. Just don't run a system upgrade while you're in the middle of a project and you won't have anything to worry about (and even if you do you probably won't).
>>
>>55625307
Then you must be really stupid, using a program a month but not able to find simple things like layer options. topkek

Try to use shadow or stroke for text.

This association is a bad thing! I see professionals using Comic Sans to say serious things. For me, they use Microsoft Paint.

I'm leaving. Bye. You people can't accept the truth. I hope I will block this fucking 4chan for good and forget about it, it's just a mess. I still come here because I was a Linux user.
>>
>>55625434
you shouldn't have told them that you prefer something else, it's like dropping a bomb
if you think PS is better, then just use it, no need to explain /g/. most of them don't do graphics design anyway
>>
>>55625455
You're right. At least you are not autist.
>>
>>55625434
Don't do this! Every anon is needed to make a better 4chan! Without your disagreement, this would be simply a circlejerking.
DON'T GIVE UP!!!
>>
The only image editing software I've used in my life has been microsoft paint and imagemagick, just so you know.
>>
>>55624490
theres a lot of ways, i would use acpid to trigger xlock or something but u can still use a power manager like xfce4-power-manager to do the same
>>
>>55625489
If you don't need them, it's fine. Just use what works best for you.
>>
>>55625489

4chan will be better when you will get rid of Stallman on this board.
>>
>>55625476
I am an autist, but that's another topic.

>>55625489
I used gimp a while to do some shitty banner. it was OK, but yeah, I agree the UI should be improved. the icons are stupid, and having to wait for the tooltip to know what each icon does is stupid.
it's not like I've used it many times, too... but it's painful for me to use it, and I've been using linux for more than 10 years.
>>
>>55625503
I don't think you can, it's a dependency. Use other distribution or live with it.
>>
I make a living editing photographs for a magazine and almost exclusively use GIMP. Only very rarely do I need to use PS for something that GIMP can't handle.

So all of you retards sitting around making rare pepes and complaining about it not being "professional" just shut the fuck up.
>>
>>55625540
Try to work in a studio. Editing photos for a magazine is not that hard.
>>
>>55625526
stallman is not as autist as you may think he is. people here just get irrationally mad over anything related to microsoft, and I bet not all of these people are stallmanites(?)/ GPL lovers.

This is not being friendly. This breaks our safe space on this thread. You haven't, at least, wrote "TRIGGER WARNING:autism"! Now, I'm triggered. I'm not autist, but everyone tells me I am. I'm bullied in every space I go, except this thread. It's enough, now I need to disconnect, and go cry for some time.

I don't think slim has a screenlock function but there is slimlock if you google that theres some info. I remember crunchbang used to use slim as DM and xscreensaver for screen locking back in the day. I think the advantage of slimlock tho is it borrows the visual config of your slim setup so everything looks good together. how do u like fvwm i just set it up on my laptop the other day im lovin it badabap bap ba
