What is the best value / budget GPU right now ?

Is it still NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti ?

I don't need high-end, just for stuff like DayZ ?

Where did the meme come from that the 750 Ti was a good perf/dollar card? It was literally never good value for money. Its selling point was entirely perf/watt and the unique performance profile it offered for a slot-powered card. In terms of actual raw performance versus price, it was always massively overpriced.

Just for transparency, I used the techspot overwatch benchmark. In the Benchmark they used the i7-6700k and got 68 fps. I then went to the CPU section and found the 28.1623% Difference in performance between this and the i5-4690k. From there it is just math, .7531 * 68 = 51fps.

Has anyone noticed that the 480 is pretty much the highest demand card right now?

Shit started at $200 price point, but it keep selling out that the price is slowly inflating. It increased to $210.. then $220. Now the cheapest price for these cards is $240 and it's still sold out.

The 480 is the best price per performance in the US.

This doesn't affect anyone right now, no one is buying a 7970 because "maybe" its slightly better in some super specific scenario in the future "possibly' and only affecting that small fraction of games that come out that support it...

Get real.

It affects everyone playing Doom. I'm sure it'll effect more and more games in the near future.
>>
>>55613148
>It affects everyone playing Doom

ie, no one.

Point is, async compute isnt even required in the DX 12 API. The 10xx nvidia series has support for it so moving on it wont matter.

Yes, some radeon hardware will see some support increase but the titles will have to be DX 12 AND support Async compute. Right now thats one title isnt it?

Maxwell handles it fine enough that its not a big deal unless youve got a kepler card, in that case you should already be thinking about upgrading since that arch is a few years old now.

They're good. They keep getting better. I have multiple cards from both as I have seven machines for gaming and productivity. I lean more AMD now since my Nvidia cards seemingly die within two years or just choke. that's when solder starts to get mushy

my card is hotter than yours no doubt
and I've found that ramping fan speed late results in more heat and noise than just running the fan at a medium speed well before hand
and a constant noise is also easyer to get used to

at 47% (1511) there is no noise above the 140 mm case fans @ 800 rpm
between 48% (1550) 50% (1660) is a little wirr

heat soak for the metal alone happens at around 70 degrees
at around this point only a little more than 60% (2077) fan speed is needed to hold tempreture

above this point extra airflow has little cooling effect
even with fans at 100% (2890) tempreture will not drop more than a degree a miniute till the gpu downclocks to its idle

not so bad as my old cards vrm issues

I have been feeling for a while that gpu have become too hot for the pci standard dimensions

with double slot cards weighing a little more than a 1kg
and triple slot getting well over 2kg

the only older cards that come close are hard drive and floppy disk controllers (over a foot long and a solid kg of microchips)

without resorting to water cooling I think its time to move the GPU to an socket with a cabinet secured backplate like LGA2011
then the same tower coolers that cpu use can be used

come to think of it why don't double slot gpu just use 120x25-12 mm fans ?
it would free up user options and allow for standard fans with a higher static pressure
>>
>>55619005

You can't get the fans and heatsink inside a double slot profile - at least not a heatsink capable of handling a 200w gpu.

I have done some measurement
many dual slot cards exceed pci slot size and waste space with ineffective cowling
so much in some cases that a 25mm thick fan would fit flush mounted in the same space
also because of the cowling on dual slot cards they are slightly more than 120mm deep

and with htpc becoming a thing there are many more 12 mm thick 120 mm fans available

Fan Speed 800( ± 30%) ~ 2000 rpm (± 10%)
Noise Level 19.53 ~ 33.67 dBA
Airflow 19.40 ~ 45.47 CFM

they are around the same thickness as stock fans
but the stock fans are only around 90 mm and have less surface area
generally the major heat source is between 60 to 120 mm away from the front plate
and the voltage regulation although a lesser heat source needs its own cooling

either way there is allot of un tapped potential

The real question is "why do you keep waiting for these incremental improvements?"

See you held on to your money for later but in the same amount of time you could have increased your budget, got something with a more significant increase in performance than these extra waiting stages offered and then just forgot about it for 1-4 years.

>>55630195
Decently better than a 480 in DX11, but the 480 was slightly better than a 390 in Doom. For that price or less, I`d say it`s plenty worth it. Less than the super gouged 480`s, and barely more than the retail ones when they`re actually available. It`s all GCN so it`ll be supported until they come out with an entirely new core. Though they`ll probably just continue to make revisions for the forseeable future like nvidia does with cuda.

1070 is more powerfuller than a 480
An aftermarket 480 with an additional overclock might start coming close to a stock 1070

The 480 will however be better in vulkan/dx12

You probably won't be able to buy either of them tomorrow, everything is out of stock.

One of the 7970 s like the GHz edition or the matrix or sapphires toxic were practically at the next gens release level and the archeticure hasn't been changed for the top end so if you have a non reference 7970 you have something that beats the 970. Its over clock even compares a little too well considering they're not even the same generation.
>>
>>55613014
The new special edition has an updated engine allowing for mcuh better use of computer resources , most notably the move from 32bit to 64 bit. One should expect higher performance without upgrading, Howe er the move to a 480 would serve you well as missed skypeon uses lots of cram and the 480 has double the 960s.

If you use higher resolution models or textures you will see vast improvement. You should also have 8gigd or more of ram to see the most improvement in special edition skyrim
