Does anyone have experience with wear and tear on automatic watches from handwinding? I've read conflicting reports (ranging from "wind to your hearts content as long as the watch is regularly serviced and lubed" to "it'll wear out the winding mechanism or at the very least you screw-in crown threads and gasket". My collection has reached 5 watches now and I only have one winder. I do wear each watch at least once a week. Thinking of rotating the ETA 3-handers/gmt watches on the winder for 12 hours each on the fastest setting, and handwinding the 7750 chronos every other day (since i hear they're more robust).

Vintage grand seikos are pretty great assuming they are in good working order mechanically. The pillow case model is a 6145-8020. There are some other models with faceted crystals that match the case lines like the 6146-8050. There are some funky 56GS models as well. These links might help

Unless you've got a moonphase or annual/perpetual calendar I think watch winders are a waste of money. You could have put the money you spent on it towards another watch. Also as long as it isn't for really long stretches of time it really doesn't hurt to just leave your watches dormant. I'm not sure about the hand winding thing either. I keep them running because 1) I do wear them at least weekly, so I'll need to reset/handwind each at least once a week i don't have a winder. That's 5+ times a week for 5 watches which is a pain in the ass. 2)Winders aren't that expensive, my Chiyoda one was ~$75, which is like 2 leather straps (and i already have a shit ton of those). How to Tell What the Date Is Without a Complicated Watch or Phone

1. Memorize what day the month started on.
2. Given this day, consider its multiples: 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th.
3. Decide the appropriate week range and count forward or backward to reach today.

Example:

1. July started on a Friday
2. I know today, Wednesday, is probably not after Friday the 15th because I just had an appointment for the 11th (or something).
3. Friday the 15th minus 2 days = Wednesday the 13th.

Things requires knowing what day it is and having a general idea of how far into the month it is, but that shouldn't be a problem unless you do absolutely nothing.
