not OP but i've been kinda using codeacademy to learn java but it doesn't really feel like it teaches you anything besides, "insert one variable in prestructured code block", I haven't made it far but it hasn't really taught me anythinga bout syntax or structuring code besides saying "add a semicolon to the end of every line", is code academy actually helpful or is it shit? any better alternatives?

I just use YouTube tutorials. Some of the programs the guy uses are a little bit behind in terms of updates, but the tutorial still makes sense because the changes aren't anything exponential.

Depends on your skull level. If you are a beginner, try implementing existing things (eg arraylist). Not because you really need that but for practicing.

Do this buy buying a book of the language
Then move onto the languages you can make cool stuff with(/g/ with call these the meme ones)
