my old laptop just died and I have only around £440 to spend on a new one
what' the best bang for my buck or whatever /g/?
I really can't afford to spunk this money on something shit so I really need some help, been looking and I'm just not sure what to do, like which brands to avoid, what to look for etc.

These guys know what's up.
Thinkpads are very durable and you can open them up and change parts, so it can last practically forever. Just get a model that has enough performance for you. The better models are X, W and T series. Others have less durability or features or both.
We're talking about used laptops btw, they cost like $2500 new with all those features. When it's used you can get one maybe $60 - $500 depending on how new its generation is.
