What does the AB AUF mean?
>>
>>55447253
It's a power reserve indicator. So I would normally think it would mean "emtpy/full" but Lange has called it "up/down" when referring to it in English.

This. Also, kangaroo leather satisfies the strength/toughness attributes. The only function not addressed is water resistance. Sacrificing 1 of 5 functions for aesthetics is pretty far from "lead balloon".

So, I made some modifications to my lug adapter and I'm pretty happy with the current revision.

The only thing I might do is add just another 0.25 or 0.5 mm to close the gap on the watch lug. Then I'm going to start looking for affordable stainless steel 3D printing or CNC machining services.

It would be nice to see an exact list of which components get made where, as these are both still 6497s.

At the moment, if you were to really push it, making everything but mainspring, hairspring and jewels in the US would be pretty darn good.

That's exactly why I bought it. But I really feel like returning it. I never really use the timer (or any of the other features) and a rotating bezel is really all I need to time study seesions. I hate being a cheap fuck and for once I'd like to enjoy myself and spend more money on a better watch.

I have a question. I go to school in an area that can get somewhat cold (~ -30C). I really like this quartz watch but the lowest temp it can handle is 5C. I assume the watch would be able to survive a cold winter as long as I am wearing it. My body should keep the movement warm enough right?

Any good reason why divers' watches have dark faces? Seems to be either black or deep blue.

A fully lumed face and hands in different colours would appear to give better readability. For instance yellow tritium would recharge red lume - I tried this using a lumed plate and tritium tubes in my home lab.

Or does that attract too many fishes?

I'm sorry,I know pretty much nothing about watches...
Why do they put Helium inside?
>>
>>55461653
deep sea submarining involves being in a pressurized environment with a helium oxygen mixture. the helium gets into the watch.

when you surface, the helium will try to get out of the watch to the lower pressure open air.

if there is nowhere for the helium to escape, it will make its own way out, potentially damaging the watch
>>
>>55461653
When you work in a underwater habitat helium is part of the breathing mixture and it can get inside your watch. When you ascend you open the valve to let that helium escape or the reduced outside pressure will cause your crystal to blow off.

Is Tudor a good brand or Swatch-tier garbage? Better than a GS?
>>
>>55461755
GS is better.
>>
>>55455933
Because it works well. Lume can be recharged in daylight (UV is very efficient) but also tritium works surprisingly well too. I tested with red and blue tritium sources and since red tritium source can charge green lume it seems the tritium source emits a bit more than just red light.

Living near the arctic circle you will appreciate recharging the lume in winter.
>>
>>55461755
Better than Swatch tier because of the Rolex cases.
>>
>>55461755
It's better than Swatch, but if you ask me the styling is fucking shit, and the fact that their models are essentially Rolex clones makes them really not cool IMO.

GS is better.

We don't talk about Swatch.
>>
>>55458710
Thats not the mdv106
>>
>>55457599
AHAHA GET REKT FUCKING KRAUT
>>
>>55462070
When you charge lume it's always significantly dimmer than the light source you used to illuminate it. It's like using a motor to run a generator, you're just wasting energy.
>>
>>55462591
Not really. The tritium source is a glass cylinder and emits light in the direction of the viewer but also in the opposite direction towards the face of the watch. The motor, as it were, is running anyway.

Searching for phosphorescent spectra it seems some UV is emitted which could explain why red tritium glowsticks can recharge green lume

rolexes are homaged so much they own a company to produce homages.

there is no shame in getting a tudor original design.

their homages are acceptable to me if only because they mostly have their own identity to some degree, or the rolex version is prohibitively expensive or offered only with features one dislikes in rolex.

for instance. I would buy a tudor date-day because I cannot get a rolex day-date In stainless steel

I would not get a tudor submariner but I could see why someone would get the minisub if they preferred it's size.

Brand new your only option is quartz/meca-quartz. I recommend looking for something with the 6T63 movement or look for microbrands using the VK63/VK64 movements. You could also try going the vintage route but that's not my area of expertise.
>>
>>55463027
If you silver the back side of the tube that light will be reflected back with almost no losses. I can see using lume paint in addition to tritium tubes since it has a much higher initial brightness but charging it with your tubes makes no sense

That watch you asked about looks odd because the glass is not flat is domed
>>
>>55468302
The seiko watches have hugely thick cases. I don't know why because alot of other seiko watches are very light
>>
>>55468302
Also rolex has (afaik) always had a 38mm case. For along time
Is small because it is an older style
>>
>>55468339
I was incorrect earlier when I said the rolex and the seiko had the same case size, the seiko is 42mm and the rolex is 40mm
the dial sizes are 27mm for the rolex and 28.5mm for the seiko
so the increase is fairly proprtional
the seiko dial looks smaller because it has a smaller bezel insert and there's a metal ring between the insert and the crystal
the domed crystal is probably also distorting it slightly
the markings also begin slightly in from the edge of the dial whereas the rolex has the markings right along the rehaut

It is sturdy and will hold up. Keep in mind syncing with atomic clocks can only be done in a few places in the world. Basically Japan and China in Asia, England and Germany in Europe and also the USA.

Atomic syncing as some sort of "traveler's dream" is more of a marketing meme than anything else. What a traveler would actually benefit from is a GPS function to switch time.

Tudor only just starting making their own movement last year, and still use ETA in some watches. And neither their in-house or ETA is held to a standard that exceeds COSC.

Depending what models you're looking at, the finish and quality of a GS stands toe to toe or exceeds the Rolex models. Tudor is a step behind (as you would expect, they wouldn't let Tudor make better watches than the parent company.)

This isn't to say Tudor is bad, and it also offers a different sort of style (depending on the model.) I'm sure if any one of us were sitting on a plane 10 years from now and someone with a scratched and beat up Tudor Black Bay was sitting next to us we'd be glad to talk to them about their watch and see some sort of coolness in it.

> Only England and Germany in europe
I know for sure that this is not true, i have travelled in a lot of European countries and my casio always had the signal and successfully synchronized. You just have to look at the maps with the range of the signal to know the covered areas
>>
>>55472147
That's because the UK transmitter, MSF is 1,500km and DFC77 in Germany is 2,000km.

You can just go look up which transmitters your watch will recieve signals from.

While you might not need to adjust the time in such a large range, if you keep changing timezones you still need to keep adjusting that in your watch.
>>
>>55472297
For further clarification for anyone confused about atomic radio signals. There are transmitters all over, many of which use different frequencies and methods for transmitting the time. Radio receiving clocks, or watches, may only be able to receive the signals from whichever ones they were designed to. In the same way an AM radio can not receive FM signals, or a normal FM radio for tuning into broadcast radio can't receive a signal above 107.9 MHz.

Many Casio sold in Japan only receive Japanese or Asian signals. Many sold in the US will only receive US+UK. When you read their "multiband 6" they're referring to literally 6 transmitters. One in Fort Collins which serves most of North America. One in the UK, Cumbria and one in Germany, outside of Frankfurt, which provide atomic sync to Europe. One in Shangqiu, China. And then the last 2 bands of the 6 are both in Japan.

So the atomic signal tells you what the current time is UTC. Your watch then takes that time in UTC, and takes the time zone setting you've given it, takes a look at the date to see if it needs to make a daylight savings adjustment, and then shows you the time. So if you move around somewhere, like in the US, as you change timezones you don't adjust the time of your watch, you change the timezone.

Meanwhile something like this watch >>55469877 uses your GPS coordinates to determine which timezone you're specifically in (there are 40 in the world) and does that adjustment for you on the fly.
>>
So I'm graduating soon from college and I plan to ask a graduation gift from dad. Budget is on the low side, probably around 10 to 15 grands maximum. I need something sporty with water resistance because I often swim and dive.

My first thought is the dateless Submariner 114060 but literally everyone I know has this watch in their arsenal so is there something comparable with similar prestige? Obviously something European at this price range.

Thanks in advance.
>>
>>55472658
>uses your GPS coordinates to determine which timezone you're specifically in (there are 40 in the world) and does that adjustment for you on the fly.

I'm not sure about the newest 8X22 module but the older 8X82 and 7X52 Astrons do not automatically adjust for Daylight Savings Time. You have to know how it's handled in the place you're traveling to and manually adjust the watch for it.

Is it true?

What is CreationWatches like these days?

I've bought from them once, but I heard they took a big dive in their customer support but then the owner came out and said he would sort shit out

When I magnetized a watch one time I just took it to a jewelry and watch shop and they did it for me for free. There are probably a number of DIY solutions out there though.

Any tips on how to check if it is mag'd without pouring iron filings all over my desk?

Also, how does a watch even get mag'd?

Today i learnt there are autists that do not want day/date on their wrist watches. Mental reminder: People like those are to be purged by hellfire.

Day/date, chrono, very legible, not cluttered with shit autists here cum for. Anon, you are my hero. Enjoy that beautiful piece of what watch should be.

You go to a watch store and ask them to undo it. It's normally done for a nominal fee or for free if you're cool. So act friendly.

Could be other issues as well. hard to say.

This collection of 100 % hairy arms suggests a lack of femanons. How come? It is not as if watch manufacturers lack ladies' models.
Also, gentlemen, how about cropping the pictures so we get 5 MB of watch face goodness rather than wall to wall carpets?
>>
>>55474296
It doesn't take much magnetism to fuck with a movement, far less than needed to pull paperclips. So you won't figure it out that way.
>>
>>55474336
For some reason many women seem to be drawn to low quality fashion brands. I have only seen one or two women irl wearing something that didn't just have a cheap quartz movement.
>>
>>55474296
They probably won't even do any sort of test, they'll just go and attempt to demagnetize it.

>>55474336
>Girls
>Internet
>>
>>55474296
Take a paper clip and straighten it out.
Suspend it from the middle in a long string so that it rotates freely. It might align with magnetic north.
Then, slowly so not to cause any air currents, bring your watch close to the *side* of one of the tips.

If the watch is magnetizes the clip will rotate to point to the watch.

Alternative 2: install a compass app on your smartphone. Calibrate it carefully, this step is essential to get this to work.

Place the smartphone in a stable position, make sure it will not move and make a note of the readings. Preferably the app has indications not only of compass bearing but also declination.

Keeping the smartphone in position bring the watch closer and see if the bearing, declination or field strength changes.
