Except that this isn't a short card, it's 27cm minimum based on the pictures.

I was hoping to buy a 480 because it was a small & short card with good price and decent performance... but not I have to wait for AIB versions, and those end up with huge pcb and huge price.

m yfavorite online shop doesnt eevn list the 4GB version anymore, maybe becasuse they all sold out already and 8GB are the leftovers.
I understand that 8GB is only necessary if you run 4k or crossfire two of them
>>

>Except that it is a short card, relatively speaking.

No it isn't. Fucking 27cm is almost a full length card. Having every single goddamn card 30cm should not be something that is expected.

>The Sapphire one there is certainly no longer than the reference model, which was a very modest side by modern standards.

1. the reference model had a much shorter PCB with a cooler that extended the PCB by 5cm or so. This one has a way wider pcb.
2. the reference model had the power connector on the side. This one has it on the BACK, which means that when installed it is way wider.

It seems like less of an overhaul and more an entirely new build.

1. Any particular reason for the low profile cpu cooler?
2. I'd recommend a lower wattage, higher efficiency, modular powersupply.
750w is pretty overkill for a single mid tier gpu
A gold rating will pay for itself with time
Modular cables are just nicer to work with.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438054 is just $25 more.
3. No SSD?

Other than that it's pretty standard.

The 480 is better in some areas than a 390 but equally the 390 simply has that much more hardware. In fact that is partly why all hawaii cards are aging like fine wine - hawaii is a very brute force architecture so it takes quite a bit to make it miss a beat.

Naturally that is also why those cards suck down electricity like americans inhale burgers.

>>55394060

If you are going to OC a 390 you better have a psu capable of keeping up - those cards are THIRSTY.

Thats what a +50% power target does on a 250w card. I've actually managed to push the card right to the power limit before (see pic) but keeping it stable at these clocks wasn't happening. It would pass some benchmarks (mostly ingame ones) and then crash in others.

Point is if you are going to extract every inch of performance from a hawaii based card you best make sure your psu can keep up with the load.

Fucking this. I slapped a 390 in a computer built in 2009 with a 1200 watt psu and still get crashes if I overclock the card. I thought it was my PSU but turns out its the motherboard.

Besides the heavy CPU bottleneck coming from my i7 930 , apparently the motherboard sometimes fails to deliver enough power to the PCI slot in overclock / graphic intensive situations where the GPU drains all the power.

Which is annoying as fuck. If im too close to an explosion generating alot of particles , my computer suddenly shutdowns. Some mobo vendors actually sell a power cable that plugs into one of your pcie slots to deliver the required power no matter the gpu load.

But it is also a major outlier of the 960s.

It is not uncommon for GPUs to Peak above the 66W-71W @ 12V specification, but the 480 is the first GPU that has its mean and mode above that.
>>

If you aren't overclocking the reference card is okay. It gets the job done - there is absolutely nothing special about it. Typically people buy AIB cards for the better coolers and (often) higher clocks.

That was the first direction I went, it maxes out at 1150 with +100mV/+50%. I have a XG270HU, so I've made an assumption that the tradeoff of 25MHz core for 100MHz Memory should be worth it.

I think at this point the smart move for a single card is to get a 390 off someone trying to meme his way to the 480 as they sell cheap and are generally better cards.

The 480 seems perfect for crossfire setups though. 400 bucks for 2 cards such as this one is pretty gud.

I've got one on pre-order but even I'm thinking the 1070 would be the better deal than 2 x Nitro 480's. I've been doing a lot of reading up on CF lately as I was considering going the same route. But there are too many games that would not benefit from it. I just got Rise of the Tomb Raider which I am playing on my overclocked R9 290. It plays OK on very high settings with a few customs down tweaks (Pure Hair off etc) and I had thought of going CF with the Nitro 480 but then read that the game is so gimped by Nvidia partnering on this title that it actually performs WORSE in CF mode. It's a complete joke. I only game at 1080 so hopefully the Nitro 480 will give enough of a boost to play it on vvery high with Pure Hair on etc.

BTW I am the guy who miss-typed DVD-D. I fell for the blue keys mechanical keyboard meme.

I'd say go with the 1070. You're basically looking at 1080 performance on games that support crossfire but then you're fucked if it doesn't. That performance jump from 1070 to 1080 ain't worth that.

I'd buy the 1070 myself but the only thing stopping me really is Nvidia being jews about Gsync. I'm not paying extra for a monitor that supports that. If Nvidia would just support Freesync then I'd be all over it.

Okay, but my personal experience says otherwise. Maybe I was just lucky. My zotac 9800gt was a worse experience than my sapphire hd7850. Anyone with more objective advice?

Actually, more try much all power supplies are most efficient at ~50% load. A super low idle could be detrimental I suppose. So call it 65%.

This. 1366 + used Xeon 5650 through X5680 = love and life. Would I build a new system with 1366? No. But if I had a 930, I'd gladly drop in a 6-core Xeon that overclocks faster and runs cooler, and not have to touch a thing in software.

have to ask, what is the most powerful xeons you can get easily and motherboard that doesnt either require a special case or power supply and fairly readily available?

i see 8 cores, but i need to cannibalize dells to get them to work and i see 6 cores but the single total power is worse than a 4790 at stock.
