Not everybody who buys a GPU cares about something so childish like performance in video games, GPUs can be used for other scientific purposes.
And even in the consumer grade, for example, you can select different levels of decoding in MadVr shaders wich requires a powerful GPU, which significant increase the output quality. So my Anime looks a lot better, but also works for every kind of video input.

If they just showed some benchmarks at the reveal that showed it was in between a 970 and a 980, there wouldn't be so much speculation and all the people claiming it is a disappointment because it isn't a 980 for $200 would have nothing to be disappointed about, because being between a 970 and a 980 for $200-$250 isn't a bad deal. the good thing about 970's is that even shitty low end models like fucking gainward can overclock to at least 1400 mhz. they're generally very reliable. the expensive models will probably have better vrm's and cooling but it generally won't be a noticeable difference. the only change would probably be that you can overclock to 1400 mhz without increasing voltage on a expensive, high binned card but the cheaper cards will most likely require some extra voltage to achieve the same clocks. basically nothing too major.

Such a dissapointment, but I think AMD did this to themselves with the incessant hype about the graphics card.

So its about the same level as a 970 while only being marginally cheaper.

AMD will look stupid if they drop prices right after release, meanwhile nvidia can probably just drop the price of the 970 down to $220-250 and call it a day, after all its almost 2 years old now.

all of the benches are the 8GB version because the 4GB version is a month or two away

you can get an AIB 8GB 390 for $250 with a nice factory OC and cooler

and the 390 definitely runs hotter but has some advantages of it's own

also what sucks about it is that it's not progress, it's a new card competing with cards that are almost 2 years old which now cost around the same because they are two years old

I remember when the 970 came out AMD stayed competitive by dropping the price on the 290x since at that time the 290x was more or less on par with the 970 ( hmm same story unfolding today) but was more expensive (~$50 more iirc)

No. Amd GCN doesn't have a boost feature. The only thing they changed with polaris is the voltage regulation. It regulates voltage whilst in game.
