So I'm torn between two versions of the same laptop at the same price:

>i5-6200u and 256GB SSD
>i7-5500u and 128GB SSD

Performance wise they should be about the same but I care more about battery life than SSD size and I remember reading something about Skylake having significant worse battery life than Broadwell

Any help?

Skylake was built to improve energy efficiency as Intel knows they can't really get much more computation power without some radical changes in chip making. Thus they are going for lower energy consumption to make money appealing to energy cost conscious businesses. After all a fewer hundred computers can really add to the power bill.

As for that part about worse battery life I find that very odd and would love to read the details, especially the test metric. But not impossible as some software my not take full advantage of the new features.

If you really want better battery under-clock it, adding a a little time to things saves a huge amount of energy as the CPU stays cooler and thus has less heat resistance loading draining the power.

Also drop as much bloatware and software as you can.
On my laptop I get
Windows 7 = 4 hours
Mac OS X (SL) = 8 hours
Debian (with optimized power settings with LXDE) = 10 hours
Debian (without DE and main GUI) = 14 hours

I like how Linux uses Mac hardware better then Mac does :^)

So I keep getting BSOD after unwillingly updating to Windows 10 (from 7). The errors varying from "irql_not_less_or_equal", "critical_structure_corruption", "pfn_list_corrupt". I'm thinking of doing a clean sweep of both my hard drive and SSD and re-install Windows 7, upgrading to Windows 10 straight away. I might fiddle around with some cables and boot priority in BIOS, since it seems like on startup, it refuses to boot from the SSD straight away.

Think this will fix my problem, or might there be a problem with my storage?

I'm not completely new to doing a clean sweep and reinstalling OS, but it's been a while since I've had to do this. Anything I should keep in mind/avoid before doing this?

I've tried updating all the outdated drivers I could find, scanned for malware/viruses, removing deamon tools and other junk that might have caused the errors, but it doesn't seem to do the trick.

I doubt there are any problems with any of my other components.

Format type for my future archive hard drive?

So it finally happened, I found a file larger than 4GB that I want to keep and I have been finding more and more that I won't mind having.

Problem is I use FAT32 as it just works with everything and a few rare cases when I use FAT16, compatibility has never been good in my life, so I am reluctant to change to some "new and improved" file system as compatible trumps features for me. So which one is going to keep working on all the different OS types so I don't need to switch hard drives all the time?

There are website that have temporary/disposable phone numbers. Use one of those, confirm it, and then remove the number from the account settings. The only problem I've had with this is Google blocking those numbers or saying they've been used too much.

Something that might help too, I noticed that I tried playing a game SOMA recently. Playing it Through steam would cause the lag, but it comes with an external .bin file that lets you play it without Steam and there is virtually no lag.

Is this behavior normal? Whenever I decide to play something, for some reason everything always runs at ~30fps until I Alt+Tab out, then when going back it runs smoothly again, and this happens with most things I try to play. You might try physically disconnecting your magnetic drive, doing a clean install on your SSD and going through setup/install of Win10 before reconnecting your magnetic.

You might also just leave the magnetic, boot from your image, and use the Windows installation environment to wipe your magnetic and SSD, and install clean to your SSD.

This question is related to Discord.

Every time I get a message the bottom right of my screen freezes for a second and i'm not sure why. I can turn off notifications but this also turns off sound and orange task bar notification.

I'm assuming it's supposed to come up with a pop-up of what the message said or something.

Is there a way to turn off notifications BUT the sound? Attached picture is scrolling down with the freeze at the bottom right.

Ok fags, I got a NAS and now want to stream shit to my phone, laptop etc. as in File stream to watch, decoded on the device I'm watching on.

Desktop, no problem at all, instant access, connected via LAN
Laptop - No problem either, WLAN, LAN, both work great. Linux AND windows.
Now, my phone. Redmi Note 3.
I've tried File Commander, ES Explorer and DSfile. With all three, I can't get over 200kb/s transfer speed for some reason, even when just downloading a file.
Same happens when I try to access a file off my PC, so it's not the NAS.
Internet access is >8MB/s through WLAN though, so it's not WLAN throughput either.

The issue is however, that I have no idea how to setup filters, I can navigate to the filter section of course, but I have really no clue on how to correctly use the filter (You kinda have to know how to use java I suppose)

My computer has been having these problems for a few months now and I was wondering if they're signs the hard drive is failing. They include:

>When I boot up my icons on the desktop will look like the snap on the left, and sometimes stay that way for up to half an hour

>The icons on my task bar will be blank like at the top right, and stay that way for several minutes

>Task manager will say my disk use on that drive is 100% even when doing nothing

>Steam takes around twenty minutes to open at times due to showing that stupid verifiying pop up for ever, even when I close steam properly before shutting of my computer

>Games have all kinds of slow down problems now and ones I could play hundreds of hours on before no longer work well at all

>sometimes it will stay on the boot screen for 15-20 minutes

>it takes forever to save things and access them

I already did a fresh install under a month ago and it's still having these problems and they're extremely frustrating. Is it a problem with the harddrive? It's a 1TB WD Blue Hard Drive 3.5" HDD 7200 RPM if that helps

Internet friend needs a new computer. They're using an old piece of shit desktop, and are in the market for one that runs decent enough-- considering getting a laptop.

Specs are:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
3.00GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 333MHz

and the troubling part, speccy reports "ATI AMD Radeon HD 6500 Series" (unknown)

I don't know shit about graphics cards. I don't understand how to tell if one will be better than the other especially when it comes to cards that are really old. I don't even know how good the current card technically is.

Would most new laptops with dedicated graphics be better than that one? It's easy enough to get more, high clocked ram, newer similar spec processor etc, but GPUs?

Scratching my head /g/. They want to do gaming, but don't need to run things at the best settings. They'd likely even settle for the lowest of the low so long as it ran at 60fps. Heeeelppp

I'm going to upgrade the GPU to this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487091

My PSU is 480W. My buddy almost had a heart attack and said to upgrade the PSU and to get a better GPU than the one I linked because 2GB isnt competitive.

I can't afford anything more than the GPU I linked though and I don't need anything else. He said it'll last me 2 years and that's it, I figure that's long enough if I'm making small incremental changes.

Should I heed his advice? I won't upgrade again for another 4 years anyway and I need cheap stuff, I can't shell out hundreds of dollars.

More important than anything, is the card relevant still? It seems fine to me.

It should be fine, depends on the power supply quality though.

If it's a cheap brand you'll likely run into problems, anywhere from underpowered gpu to crashing and hurting your system but if it's a good brand you'll be fine.

I'd personally recommend waiting for price drops that the 480/470 will cause and try pick up a much cheaper card and a quality power supply.

If you get a 970/470/480 and a good power supply in a few weeks after saving up a bit more you can upgrade your other parts and fully improve your system rather than making cheap small upgrades that don't bring you very far.

It's a good card. Not the best bang for buck ever, but not bad. You should be good on power, but I agree that it does rest pretty heavily on the quality of the power supply. Also make sure you have the right connections on PS. The 2gb really isn't a problem for most games. The card has a 4gb version and it really only sees minor improvements on a few games. You'll max out the cards processing before ram. Memory is an easy stat that plebs latch onto, but it doesn't matter when you have other things bottlenecking you. If you can I would wait a few months and let the dust settle on the new generations of red and green. There's gonna be big changes but nobody knows how worth while it will be for the non VR crowd yet. You might like the 470 when it hits.

You don't need 700w of power at all. 550w is more than enough for a very high end system these days as long as you buy modern parts and a good power supply.

And no, 970 is nvidia but 470/480 are new AMD cards designed to be $200 but good performance.

Seeing as it's a prebuilt I'd assume the power supply is very bad, they usually are. Get a power supply from a tier one or two from this list http://i.imgur.com/tgrbCnrh.jpg

Your CPU will likely bottleneck a high end card for a while, but like I say you can upgrade that later if you make room for it with a good power supply now.

For a CPU you'll likely need a new motherboard too. Something like a i5 6400 or 6600/6600k is more than enough.

In fact if you do plan to upgrade the whole thing you might be better off getting a 6600 and using the IGPU then upgrading your gpu later once the prices lower. The integrated graphics will be better than your GPU right now. By a huge amount, you'll likely be able to run anything you want with that alone.

In the end, because of bottlenecks you'll have to raise your whole system up to get proper performance.

You could also look into AMD side of CPUs which are usually very budget based. But I'd never buy an AMD CPU again personally after owning a 8320
>>
>>55292400
Thanks, that helps a lot. I can afford to wait, I just wanted to snap that Newegg sale up because I thought it'd end soon and it didn't seem like I had any other option for a good card that was cheap like that.

The PSU is from a Logisys that came with the case. It's a Logisys CS368BB ATX Mid Tower Case w/480W Power Supply.

Kek, I guess my friend is a pleb then, that fag. The 470 what? Red and green generations?
Sounds good though, I'll wait.

I'm not sure why you listed your specs if you just want to throw it out, but it would not be hard to find something noticeably better. Just look for an intel processor with the number 3000 or hire, i3 acceptable, i5 preferable. For graphics just about any dedicated card is going to beat what he had. If you go on passmark, aim for a gpu around 1000 score at the minimum 5000+ ideally.

Bottlenecking really depends on the graphics card. Traditionally AMD is a lot more dependent on the cpu to help it out, whereas nvidia barely touches it and works very well with older less capable processors. Can't know for sure if that will hold true for the next generation, but the basic differences between the two companies' architectures are usually consistent. That said, PCs are evolving much more slowly than a few years ago (excluding graphics), so investing in a quality intel processor now could really pay off in the long run.

Thanks for everything but one more question:

I'm looking for 6600s but only CPUs come up. Does this have a IGPU or am I missing something? And I'd need a motherboard. To clarify, the 6600 has an IGPU but not an integrated motherboard, right? I might be willing to drop the dough on the 6600 if it has an IGPU and then get the motherboard separate, as well as get a tier-one PSU.

My RAM is PNY 8GB, 2x4. DDR3 PC3-10666. Compatible with 1333Mhz/1066Mhz. I'm assuming I'll need new RAM too but that's fine.

AMD CPUs are cheap and work. The one aids thing is if you want to UPGRADE to Intel CPUs you're gonna need to replace your MOBO so it has the right socket.
>>

The i5-6600 CPU comes with HD 530 graphics which is very good as far as IGPUs go. For a motherboard you would need to by one with a LGA 1151 socket.

Kek, yeah I noticed this. On the one hand, the Intel CPU upgrades my GPU and my CPU. But I need a new MOBO. PSUs are cheap, not worried about upgrading that, especially if it needs it.

I'll do some thinking, might wait for 470/480. Will the bottleneck be as bad if I have a Nvidia GPU with a AMD CPU?

Thanks for the link but I can't afford 500 bucks right now, if I get the 960 I'm going to get it alone.
>>
>>55292948
Golden, thank you.
>>
>>55292704
IGPU means integrated graphics. You'll have a motherboard With the LGA 1151 slot, if you Google that you'll find all the motherboards come with a HDMI port for skylake integrated graphics which runs the CPU. You plug your HDMI into the motherboard rather than a graphics card. Until you buy one.

If you're looking for the 6600 then the default 6600 comes with a cooler but the K edition does not, k basically means overclocking capable.

Depending on which CPU you want you'll need a motherboard to support it. For normal 6600 any LGA 1151 will do, but for 6600k you need z170 LGA 1151 which costs a bit more but has overclocking capable.

For your needs you can pick what you want. 6600 alone is more than enough for absolutely anything. I'd recommend an aftermarket cheap cooler like a hyper 212 evo even for a 6600 just to keep it silent and cool.

You could also look into the downgrades below a 6600, 6400 6500 etc will also be good enough for typical use.

In the end you get what you pay for and waiting an extra $50-100 can mean a big difference, but you might not need it if you never plan to put it overclocked.

>>55292952

The idea is to not have a really good CPU or GPU only

Yeah, my buddy explained what k is. No need for that, and yeah don't worry I knew IGPU meant integrated.

I was going to get the H170 from Asus for a mobo.

I certainly do not intend to overclock it as I am not an enthusiast. I'm a simple man of simple needs and just want to run muh games decently. Might go for 6400 or 6500 if it saves $100, which is what I can use the mobo money on.

You've been incredibly helpful and I think I know what I'm going to do.

Can I use my current internal HDD on the new parts, though? I know I need a new PSU but I'm a jew and am trying to save as much dosh as possible.
>>
>>55293006
Dude what

A good CPU will always be more important than a good GPU.

Your CPU can limit the GPU power but never the other way round. A CPU running at 100% means the GPU will not be getting any more power, however a GPU running at 100% is what it should be at.

You can't ever have too much CPU power but you can have too much GPU power.

Sure in a perfect world you can get a GPU and CPU combo where the GPU and CPU use enough to keep everything at 100% without any loss in performance but that will likely never happen, since temperatures and what you are using it for can require different amounts of CPU usage compared to others.

Like I said if you don't plan on OC you can save $50-70 right there and get a standard LGA 1151 board

A lot of the non-z170 boards support DDR3 RAM so you won't even need new RAM.

You can use that HDD on anything. Might have to reactivate windows, some people say reformatting when changing a motherboard is a good idea.

An even better idea is cheap SSD for just your OS though. Even the cheapest ones will speed up your OS and typical internet use by a huge amount

Thanks, I'm caught with the dilemma from earlier though. I might just get the 970 afterall without upgrading my CPU because my GPU is the only thing in dire straights right now.

If I upgrade my CPU to 6600, I'd need a new motherboard so that's an extra $100 and I'd need a new GPU anyway so that's another $100. Might just wait for new AMD stuff, since my current CPU seems to be the minimum.

I'll definitely keep 6500/6600 in mind when the time comes to upgrade my CPU.

Where I stand now, I'll either get the 970 or wait for the new AMD 470/480. It sucks because if I didn't have to upgrade motherboard, I'd definitely get a new CPU. I'll screw around with some options, maybe I can get a new CPU that's friendly to my motherboard for cheap and then manage a new GPU too.

Intel is releasing Skylake-E Q1 2017, and AMD is releasing their Zen processors in Q4 2016.

Skylake-E will be your standard Intel fare with lower TDP and incremental performance increase on the same LGA1151 platform.

Zen is still a big question mark at this point. The best we can hope for is performance comparable to Haswell-E but at a lower price. If they even deliver that, it will be really tempting because Skylake isn't that significant of a performance boost compared to Haswell-E.

Game debate is not reliable.

You will need a dedicated GPU to run the latest games on high settings. But you can run them in low 1080p at around 50-60fps.

It depends on the game. If it's CPU heavy you'll have an amazing time with integrated GPU.

Things like LoL csgo WoW etc are all things that you could play 60fps on medium high settings and see no issues

DDR5 will work on anything

You do not need a soundcard they are useless. Your motherboard will have audio. HDMI also gives audio to a monitor

PS/2 is a circle connector in the rear I/o usually green or purple or both. Probably under the specs, but it's mostly outdated technology as most things come through USB these days for mouse and keyboard.

Use a power supply calculator online. They usually give an estimate way over what you'd need so if you go by the you'll be fine. Just remember to buy a quality PSU. The reason people say to buy a 700w PSU for a pc only using 400w max is because trash power supplies only run well around 50% usage and usually run way worse than advertised. Just get a good power supply, you can't ever have a power supply that's too good.

A 480 looks about perfect for what you want. When the dust settles and prices settle in a few weeks you will easily be able to see what's the best gpu for around $150-200.

And a 970 with a 6500 should max out dark souls 3 60fps, witcher 3 you could get away with high and no hairworks 60fps

Shadow of mordor will be no problem at all.

Assuming 1080p

You couldn't have picked a worse time to try pick a budget GPU. The only answer is to wait a while and see how it all stacks up. Wait for 480 benchmarks is the best answer. If it's equal or better than a 970 it will be very good to buy.

And using 2 sticks of 4gb rather than one 8gb, unless you plan to add one more 8gb later and that motherboard only has 2 RAM slots, then one 8gb is fine,

Hard to see, you should copy paste the permalink in future

It is complaining about not being able to find the folder to which the patch is applied.
I tried varients of -p1 and t is sill not finding it.
What am i doing wrong?

That's not true, they released the option with their last update to 8.1.

My problem seems to be deeper as I have the correct update but the option does not appear.

Fuck Microsoft.

Just budget that 105 extra onto your build. You will only regret it if you don't. It's a luxury item to don't need that yet

I'm using a gaming laptop right now and I'm really used to having a backlit keyboard.
The 710 was pretty much the cheapest mechanical keyboard that comes with a backlight that has good ratings.
All my friends also told me to definitely get a mechanical keyboard. I'm not going to be playing any ridiculously demanding games either. The most intensive game I'm playing is probably just doom and I'm pretty sure the 480 can max it out or get very close at 1080.

Thanks, yeah I've accepted I need a new CPU.
I also misunderstood your whole intent at first, here is my plan:

I am going to wait for now, see what happens with the 480. I am certainly going to eventually get the 6500 or 6600 with a decent motherboard. I may or may not upgrade PSU sooner or later.

Maybe the prices of the 970 will go down in a few months? Maybe 480 will be a better choice at a cheaper price? We'll see.

All in all I expect to pay $400-500. I need a new monitor too and I might get that cooling thing you suggested if it's still you, but that's luxury stuff I'll get way later.

I appreciate all of this, I realized my CPU is out of date to the point I need completely new stuff. The good thing is I already have RAM, HDD, and a case so that's a lot of money I'm saving already. I am open to spending 400-500 in the long run if it means being future-proof and running my epic games on high at 60fps silky smooth.

I also realized the CPU would hold back the new GPU anyway, as you stated in earlier posts.

I finally sorted it all out and "get" it, the only move now is not to play and to wait. You've been a big help, can't stress that enough, gimme that cawk

You'll regret it. Get a better PC first, 6 months later you'll see a new game released and wish you had that extra 20% fps rather than a keyboard a short while earlier

alright so should I drop down to a regular keyboard and maybe put in that extra money towards a 6500 and more ram?

>>55293994
I was thinking of getting an ssd but at that size I probably won't be able to fit any games on it. Is an ssd still worth it if it's everything except games?
>>
>>55294006
There is no need to put games on an ssd
Use the ssd for your system install(so everything is fast and loaded), then use your larger drive for game installation
>>
>>55294006
PSU > CPU > GPU > SSD > RAM > MOBO

Yes an SSD will be good. You don't need to put all your games on it, just one or two you frequent as well as your OS is fine. 120gb is more than enough, just store all downloaded files to a HDD.

alright so I'm at this build http://pcpartpicker.com/list/XzzXHN

Should I keep the 6500 or lower it back down to a 6400?

Also, since I really don't plan on doing any overclocking would the reference 480 be an alright choice or even then should I wait for aftermarket cards?

whats the best 970 to get? i dont care about overclocking whatsoever.

Am I retard or is there something wrong
I have a gigabyte z97x gaming 7 MB with realtek HD audio drivers but this thing won't pick up microphone input
I've used both 3.5mm and 2.5mm and still nothing, it only picks up the sound of the button on the headset being pressed and nothing else
I've already tried so much help me /g/
>>
>>55294143
If you don't want to overclock at all and you don't care about noise then just go for the reference version.
It would help if we knew your budget though, since if you are willing to spend a bit more the aftermarket cards will give you some increased performance and help with the automatic gpu boost feature.

desu though you shouldn't even be getting a 970. The 390 beats it in pretty much every scenario, and with the 480 coming out and being close to 980 level performance there's no reason to buy a 970.
>>
>>55294154
Are you using a line level input instead of a mic level input?
>>
>>55294172
oh no kidding. guess ill wait for a 480 then, as i can wait.

compatible with i5 6500 i assume?
>>
>>55294200
yup.
rarely any games are cpu intensive anyway.
>>
>>55294135
The difference between the evo and another SSD for typical OS usage won't be that big, you're talking milliseconds. If you're on a budget any half decent SSD will be more than enough.

The thing about your build that keeps happening is you're budgeting core parts of your pc lower but raising the luxuries up. You don't need an expensive SSD, you can just add one in later on, where as you can't just replace a CPU with a small $30 upgrade you have to re-buy the whole thing, and the old one is now useless or you have to go through the trouble of selling it.

CPU first, then SSD.
>>
>>55294254
the i5 6500 should be sufficient for games though, right?
Like I mentioned previously, I'm not planning on overclocking so I don't need the 6500k or an aftermarket cooler.
>>
>>55294182
No idea, I'm just plugging into the front jack
Is there a way to check?
>>
Does the 6800k overclock well? If so I need a mobo that overclocks well and also has 2 M.2 slots that aren't obstructed when using a single gpu.

>>
What do you guys think of my dream build?

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/NHvD8K
>>
>>55294268
Yes it will be enough but that's not the point

The point is that you can't just easily upgrade a core part of your system like that, where as with an SSD you just plug it in and you keep your previous one.

You can always buy an SSD later, you can't just add in an extra 20% performance to your CPU later, without having to replace the whole thing.
>>
>>55294332
tfw can't tell if trolling or not
>>
If I don't plan on doing any overclocking and don't mind noise that much either, then will there be any reason for me to buy an aftermarket RX 480?
As far as I know cooling (for oc'ing) and noise are the only benefits of these cards but since I'm not concerned about either of those a reference card should be fine right?
There's no performance gains or anything on the other cards unless you overclock anyway, correct?
>>

>>

Anything else is too expensive. I'm not paying over $300 for a GPU. At least with a CPU it will last forever, but GPUs get outdated every other year.
>>
>>55294489
>gpu's get outdated every other year
Yes, if you buy $300 gpu's.
The 980ti will be relevant for at least another 2 years.
>>
>>55294421
Use a windows usb or CD to install windows and just buy a CD key for a fraction of the price, even windows 7 8 or xp will activate as windows 10 so you can get them dirt cheap

Spend way less on the motherboard, I can't imagine any reason why you'd need a micro atx motherboard of that price putting it into an ATX case

Seeing as it looks like you'll be doing video editing I'd suggest a better CPU cooler

I guess the rest doesn't have too many issues, just looks retarded
>>
>>55294464
You can install windows 7 it depends on your motherboard

You can use a windows 7 key to activate windows 10

I'm still using my GTX 285 from 7 years ago and it was about $300 when I got it. The 980 is way too expensive, even more so with the Ti.

In fact I'd still use the 285 if it weren't for DirectX 11 and 12 locking me out of today's games.

depends on the size and how far away from the screen you are.
For example, of a 70 inch tv you would pretty easily be able to tell the difference between 4K and FHD even if you were sitting 20 feet away.

On a phone screen that's 5.2" - 5.7" however even with your face only a foot or two away you wouldn't be able to tell.
