Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

How come Firefox 47 on Xubuntu won't play an HTML5 streaming video? Do I gotta install a codec or something?

FF47/Xubuntu only plays it if I enable Flash. Without Flash enabled it displays a gray box with "Video format or MIME type is not supported"

BUT the same site plays WITHOUT Flash installed on Windows, Mac, iOS, etc.

OK so I installed ffmpeg and enabled all those configs on the wiki page, but same problem.

The YouTube and quirksmode test pages seem to suggest everything is working. I guess it's a problem with the site?

Looking at their source, they're using a <video> tag with the src attribute pointing to an m3u8 playlist. Anything special I gotta do to handle that?

It's not removed, it's left up to user choice and specification.

Update: with mpv and youtube-dl installed, I can "mpv <url>" and the video plays. Just can't get it to actually play inline in Firefox. Unless I enable Flash. Which I don't want to do.
>>
>>55259775
just install open with extension and add mpv.
>>
>>55260051

That does work, thanks for the tip. Weird that it doesn't display inline in the browser. Seems strange that Flash would work better than HTML5 video in Linux of all places.

I just installed Linux for the first time. I decided on Ubuntu-MATE. Everything has gone fairly smoothly but getting my graphics card set up is a real pain. Whenever I try switching drivers from the default x.org one to one of the open source Nvidia ones I get a black screen on reboot with my monitor switching to standby. I've tried following some suggestions I've found through Google but nothing has worked. What should I do? The card is a GTX 760 if it matters.

How can I get it to be recognized as a touchpad, so I can configure it? (for tapping, scrolling, etc)

Right now it just has barebones functionality

I might be able to help. I own the exact same card, but I am on Debian.

Did Ubuntu come pre-installed with the proprietary NVIDIA drivers?
If so, why do you even want to switch to the Nouveau (unofficial, open source, reverse-engineered) drivers? The only reason to have those is if you
a) Want to intentionally gimp your card's performance
b) Want to go full free-friend

And if it's b), then you probably chose the wrong distro. You should go on Debian with no non-free components

I don't want a gimped card or shit performance and I don't really care about FOSS.

The first thing I did after installing was to try the driver installation from the console using a guide. On reboot I had no video.

Then I found out that there is a built in driver manager that can do the driver installation for you (like I said this is my first time). The Nouveau drivers work but performance is not great and when I try to install the open source Nvidia ones available in the manager I have the same problem as the console installation - no video. Maybe I need a better guide?

Question regarding new hardware and Linux:

Whenever new hardware comes out, say Skylake or Kabylake, can Linux run right out of the box or does somebody need to make new drivers or update them the way OEM do? Never used Linux before.

I'm asking because thinking back to the start of the windows 10 upgrades, especially HP and Dell, working hardware in 7 and 8.1 suddenly experienced driver problems. And then there's this talk of windows 7 no longer being supported by Skylake and Kabylake. Would Linux experience the same problems?

it means that when there is new hardware that you want to run linux on Stallman himself will enter your body and write the proper drivers

Purge flash and it will work.

>>55263555
the drivers will be incorporated into the kernel asap, this is why it is recommended for people with very new hardware to either compile a new kernel or use a distro that uses a new one.

I installed Arch in dual-boot on my XPS 9350 tonight, following the guide at the end of this comment with a few additions (gave sudoer privileges to the user, set the locale, little stuff) and now I can't for the life of me get the option for Arch on boot. I checked the fstab file and both the boot partition and the root partition are in the fstab, I found the grub folder in the /boot/efi/EFI, and when I originally rebooted after installing I saw "arch" under the options for UEFI boot devices, but booted into Win10 to make sure it didn't get fucked up in the install, and now every time I reboot I can't find the Arch install anywhere. Where do I go from here?

I'm trying to play Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit on Ubuntu 14.04.
Got PlayonLinux and installed it from the retail CD through it (had to fiddle with the settings a bit like setting the emulated Windows version to 98 instead of XP).
Last night I got it to work partially; I could play the intro cutscene, get into the menu and do pretty much everything up until the actual 3D rendering started (race start). The screen just froze at that point (still showing the loading screen).
I un- and reinstalled it several times (including removing the VM and setting it up again, but now I can't even play the intro cutscene -- the screen just stays black, then the game crashes after a minute.

Does anyone have suggestions what to do to get it to work?

Find attached my system information. The line I marked in gedit was added by me but doesn't have any effect on the behaviour.

First off: If you removed a package, part of a meta-package, it's your own fault. I suggest learning about packaging in general.
Second, it obviously asks you, click cancel if the results don't suit your needs.
Third: Read the manpage of a program before you use it like everyone else.

That is not apts fault, its your package maintainers who believe its required. Just leave it manually removing that is going to create more of a headache and will continue to come back during upgrades.

Basically just stop being autistic and leave it there, if you don't want all the bloat/features of a DE then don't use one.

Got rid of Arch for Solus on my Latitude E6500. Can't be any happier. It have everything for a typical, normal desktop user need and nothing that we don't need. Not to mention it's brutally fast and have a nice UI. It's now the nicest one after Fedora.

About the speed, I don't really get it being the normie I am but they did a benchmarking using Phoronix Test Suite here. ( https://solus-project.com/2016/06/20/solus-1-2-shannon-released/ )

And the most important thing is that I now type less to achieve the same task as I always did on Arch. Why type more for less?

If there's anymore person asking for a friendly Linux recommendation, I'll point them to Solus without a doubt. It's still new but big potential.

Hey guys, I just installed a new wireless card in my thinkpad running Xubuntu. The card is detected on startup but doesn't seem to want to scan the area for my network unless I physically put it right next to the router on startup, but if I bring it to where I have the laptop normally positioned, it maintains that connection just fine. Got a new laptop and want to finally make the switch from wincux. I just dont know how to choose a distro. I kinda want it minimalistic and just install only what i need to. My main uses are:
Learning Opengl/c++(first priority)
Browsing the weeb
Playing a few games(min priority)
Also im a bit confused on how to find a distro that supports my hardware, namley a raid0 and SLI configuration. Any point in the right direction is approcatied.

Pic related, its my hardware.
>>
>>55271144
Debian net install is a good option

If you really want it to be minimalistic, don't choose a desktop environment when the installer asks you. This way you'll install your own window manager and your own programs. This is however not recommended for a newbie, but if you wanna go on ahead and do it it's fine. Just don't be afraid of the command line and you'll be okay.

If you want to make things easier on yourself, install a desktop environment. Your hardware can run any DE, so the choice comes down to personal taste, as lightness is not really a concern.
>>
>>55271144
Keep in mind, I don't have any experience with SLI, and this is down to the propietary drivers - not the distro you choose. So maybe research on that a little bit
>>
>>55271460
Thanks for the advice, a friend was pointing me towards debian as well. I think i will try this distro out. Can i go back after install and change my window manager? Or i would have to do a fresh install? It might be something i could look into when i have some free time.

>Can I go back after install and change my window manager?

Before I answer this, some basic info:

Display Manager: For now, all you need to know this is like the user login screen that appears when you first boot your computer up.
Window Manager: What draws your windows and interface when you're actually in your session
Display Server: Don't worry about this for now, all you should know is it's called "X11".

Desktop Environment: A bundled up display manager, window manager, and display server with a bunch of basic complimentary programs - to make it convenient for the user.

So now: yes, you can have multiple window managers installed. If you have a display manager installed (and you will, because you installed a DE previously), you'll get the option to select which window manager you wanna use for that particular session. If you don't, it's a matter of editing some configs to switch between WM's.

>NVIDIA drivers for Linux
Yes, there are both propietary and open-source (Nouveau). If you install Debian, the default drivers that will be installed will be the Nouveau ones. If you want the official propietary ones from Nvidia (and you probably will, because they offer better performance) follow these instructions: https://linuxconfig.org/nvidia-geforce-driver-installation-on-debian-jessie-linux-8-64bit

It's usually a bad idea to just go to a website and download programs in Linux, things are done differently here. You usually download only from trusted repositories instead of clumsily handling .exe's from a website you're putting a lot of trust into.

This might be a good read as well:

Basically, you can make any program portable by linking local libs. That's a lot of work tho. There's a new thing called "snap" that does this exact thing: It gives you a program shipped with all libs locally.

or what?

Debian will make you learn more but I wouldn't recommend it as a first distro. You can still try it out.

Could anyone link me to a proper tutorial for installing Ubuntu 16.04 dual booted with Windows? Win8.1 here.

Last attempt I fucked up my partitions.
Before I begin should I create a partition?

I'm gonna do it, /g/, I'm gonna switch from windows to linux. Last thing before I bite the bullet is do I go debian or ubuntu? Can a retard use debian? The reason I'm even still considering it is because I like the logo and don't like ubuntu's, that's how retarded I am. Will I make it?

>>
>>55274882
They are pretty similar although debian uses a longer release cycle, so take this into consideration if you need more up to date userspace software. If you don't like Ubuntu's GUI, Xubuntu is a very nice spin-off distro. Dont fall for other meme spin-offs like Mint though
>>
>>55274882
Can you read a manual? Then you can have a good time with debian. If not you will probably be frustrated.

No, you're right, debian logo is god tier.
Debian might need some configuration once you installed it. If you can spend 30 minutes to have things working as you want, go for it.

Are they any good distros which:
- work well out of the box with minimal user effort (e.g. ubuntu)
- have bleeding-edge packages
- have big repos

I've been using Arch for some time, but any time I reinstall it it's always such a pain to get everything back the way I like it. The only reason I even use it is for the bleeding-edge software (I hate waiting ages for new features).

I feel like I should just install Ubuntu or one of its flavours (simple to install and the packages aren't too out of date), but I'm wary of trusting Canonical.
>>
>>55274882
>The reason I'm even still considering it is because I like the logo and don't like ubuntu's
And now to put you off Debian:
Did you know that "Debian" comes from joining together its founder's name (Ian) with that of his at-the-time-girlfriend (Debra)?

Also, Debian is going to be more awkward for you as a beginner since you have to edit a config file just to get non-free software, and because of its focus on free software you might have trouble getting things like wireless network cards to work.

Best partition scheme for a 250gb SSD + 1 tb HDD setup?
>>
>>55277004
SSD:
/dev/sda1 /boot 100mb (300mb if UEFI)
/dev/sda2 / 25gb

HDD:
/dev/sdb /home/

I would suggest lvm'ing your / and remaining space. That way you have room to expand, and you wont be wearing all of your drive addcidently, as it performs better the further away from the last cells.

I plan on installing Debian Testing and LVMing everything in a encrypted lvm to unlock both drives with a single key.

Won't having the /home directory where the user data is stored mounted on the hdd defeat the purpose of having an ssd? Also do i need to do anything specific to use UEFI?

This probably sounds stupid but i'm still a pleb in ganoo linux.

You wont load your configuration files faster on an ssd, loading it 1 nano second faster on a 5mb file, isnt going to do anything
You dont want your user profile, all the data and shit that is going to be on it, to be on your ssd. All the programs and binaries will be on your ssd, which is what is going to have the biggest gain.

/home is a user data
/ is services/daemons/binaries which will benfit from an ssd.

>both drives on key
Unless you're going to use a keyfile on an other media(usb,sd), you wont be able to use a keyfile that isnt avalible at boot.
Use a password to unlock root, then have your keyfile within the / and unlock /home

I remember using a password on dm-crypt to unlock the encrypted lvm at boot though.

how do I change the home directory? or add on to it? I installed Manjaro on my SSD and the home folder is there by default, and I currently also have an unused (not formatted to any type) 3TB HDD. How do I use the space on the HDD to add on to the home folder?

>>
>>55276865
I'd recommend Debian testing, but you do have to tweak some shit. Given that you're coming from Arch, you wouldn't have a problem with that, but since you want minimal effort, then I guess you could go with any of the *buntus.

I'm not familiar with Manjaro, but from what I understand it has a graphical installer, in which case there should've been a partitioning option somewhere along the line which listed all your drives and partitions. On that screen, there should've been an option to mount your home folder on your HDD. In Arch you would just do (assuming you had already created a partition on the drive):
>mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdXY
>mkdir -p /mnt/home
>mount /dev/sdXY /mnt/home
But I dunno how it looks in Manjaro's installer. The option should definitely there, I would've thought.

Honestly though, I wouldn't use the full 3TB hard drive for your home folder. I'd create a partition on the drive for the home folder of, at the maximum, 100GB (honestly, even 50GB should be plenty), then mount the rest of the drive under /media/[username]/[whatever you want to call your hard drive] and use it for general storage.

>>
>>55277763
update regularly, don't mix sources, only sudo/su when you need to, be careful with permissions, get ufw, install apt-listbugs and apt-listchanges( i don't know if they are available or good on buntu, but on debian these are great), don't fuck up partitioning, read the manuals before running things you don't understand.

Is Clementine not playing audio for anyone else? I'm looking at the list of recommended music players on installgentoo and I can't figure out which one to pick.
>>
>>55280288
I'm not the guy who asked the question. But he's asking about rolling release distros, it's pretty obvious why.

Ubuntu repos don't update most packages unless there's a bug or security issue.

>Ubuntu repos don't update most packages unless there's a bug or security issue

How do you know this?
What is the problem?
>>
>>55280342
try purging pulseaudio and selecting alsa as an output in clementine.
>>
>>55280435
Because that's how almost every stable distro works.

The problem is the packages are old. Here is an example

Ubuntu's latest release: 2.1.2-1
packages.ubuntu.com/xenial/audacity
Arch linux: 2.1.2-3
archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/audacity/

In this case it probably doesn't matter, but occasionally you'll need recent releases. Especially once your distro's latest releases starts to age. A lot can happen in several months.
