Guy who bought

here.

Got a message from the seller that the no backlight version only has blue switches and if they can send me that instead. Going to just cancel this order and buy the backlit one, I can swallow the couple bucks difference though I'd much rather not have any lights on it. Oh well. Just confirming now if they blue light has the black switches or do I have to buy the ugly multi color one.

As far as I'm aware, they're the same cap fitting, but I think there are differences deeper in the switch at some point.

That's a great deal. I think I might just buy that today. Thanks anon.

Exactly. Personally I prefer them over most original Alps switches, but others would disagree. I also think that orange Alps suck ass.

I'm still waiting on an order from Winkeyless where I ordered the tactile Clear version, which is virtually identical. Am pretty thrilled to find out whether the two of us are in line on these. It'd be pretty bad, considering I ordered 200 of those, but I guess I'll be able to sell them for at least the same I paid for them, so whatever.

Just got this beauty. (thinkpad compact bluetooth keyboard) Not mechanical, but scissor switches are surprisingly good compared to normal rubber domes. And the trackpoint is soooooo nice.

Originally bought it for taking notes in class with my phone, but it might also end up replacing my realforce.

They feel great, but when I look closely there's some haze around the legends, like the dye bled a little. Is this normal?
>>
>>55251473
That can happen with dyesubbed caps, it's pretty much indicative of the quality of printing. More expensive sets will typically not have this kind of problem.

My dream keyboard is probably the TEX Yoda but I can only find the Thinkpad branded one for like $350 w/o Shipping at some Chink Site. I would kill for one (and arguably break my budget up to $200 for a 60-key plate mounted black keyboard with trackpoint.

Other than that, anything closest to the TEX Yoda without a TrackPoint?

open the switches and blow them out or see whats wrong. you just slide two screwdrivers on the tabs to the left and right side of the switch and pull up on the middle part. Just make sure not to bend the click leaf (beacuse it will change the way the switch feels) and put it back in on the right side of the housing.

I'm not sure what Taihao was thinking when they applied this coating but it is said to give a sticky feeling if it was shipped in extreme shipping conditions but other people just dont like the feel of it
some people have discoloration from the coating but its just the coating being discolored and it washes off easy
most groupbuys ask tai hao to not apply the coating so its not like it even matters unless you buy them off a website w/ it on
its hard to find doubleshots at that price tho so u take ur pick if u think thin PBT isnt for you
thin PBT > any ABS imo but i dont care enough to buy GMK

Pretty much what this (>>55267430) anon posted. Handwiring a keyboard matrix is ridiculously simple. You just make rows with the diodes and columns with your wire and then hook that up to the controller, the rest is a matter of configuring your matrix in the firmware (also really simple business).

>>55267379
Which exact part of the wiring are you referring to?
Those uninsulated wires you're seeing in this (>>55266886) picture are just the contacts of the diodes, connected with solder, both of which you can find on aliexpress (or just about anywhere for that matter).

overcome your fears anon, the worst that can happen is that you fuck up and learn from the mistake that you made.

Nothing grants you coolness points like spending more money on parts for a keyboard than an actual keyboard would cost, breaking shit and then spending even more money in a half-assed attempt to fix it.
No seriously, just take the plunge. Start with something small like a numpad if you're scared, I'll even hold your hand through every single step if you'd like.

>>55267526
Cheers, have fun and keep us posted. What do you plan on building?
>>
>>55267573
>What do you plan on building?

A Terminus Mini clone, probably. But it would cost me over 120$ in parts, which is a bit over my budget that started with a "I'll just get this 40$ chinese mech and be happy with it".

So if I get a pile of money together before I give up on the whole idea, it will be a Terminus Mini.
>>
>>55267638
Did you find any parts yet (e.g. plate or case) ? I've been wanting to build a 40% myself sometime, and I'm quite curious to see that this matrix layout is all about.
I was thinking of designing my own PCB, but that's still going to take a while.
>>
>>55267666
I will probably scam some local laser cutting shop into giving me a solid deal on a tiny (by their standards) order of metal/acrylic plates.
I won't go the PCB way, since that's hella more expensive. And the site you linked me yesterday already designed plates for me, but I'd still have to design a PCB. So PCB would be a total waste of time and money for me.
>>
>>55267732
Yeah, I'd probably etch and drilll my own PCB if I were to design one. The main reason I want to learn PCB design is for the sake of future projects and also just general electronics since I'll be entering EE later this year and it never hurts to already know some things. And because every time I've hand-wired something I begin to question the decisions I made in my life halfway through the process.

>>
>>55267430
Really neat. Thanks for the link. Is this possible with an arduino or can't it poll that fast as needed by a keyboard?
>>
>>55268843
It's 100% possible.
3$ Arduino Pro Micro has a capable processor that's good enough for keyboards. Planck, Terminus Mini and others use it. It can even store several layers in the on-board EEPROM storage. Team behind Terminus Mini made some powerful firmware for it, so you don't even have to write anything yourself.

You'd be better off getting a Novatouch. Both the Type Heaven and the Novatouch have shitty ABS keycaps, but in the case of the Novatouch you won't have any problems finding replacements since the stems are cherry mx compatible.

If you don't want the Novatouch, then I'd recommend getting a HHKB or a Realforce. Or something else than Topre altogether.
>>
>>55271263
Right, I forgot about the stems. Looks like I'll go with that Novatouch.

Thanks for the help.
>>
>>55271323
Enjoy your keyboard anon.
>>
Should I seriously consider putting stabilizers on 2u keys? Do they make a noticeable difference at such for such short keycaps?

Also, where can I buy them? Costar or cherry, whichever fit the DSA keycaps from PimpMyKeyboard.
>>
>>55272016
Stabilizers making hitting the edges of keys feel smoother. The type of stabilizer you should use depends on what kind of keyboard back plate you have.
>>
>>55272301
But it won't break or anything without it?

>what kind of keyboard back plate you have.
I'm designing it and not sure if I should bother with holes for stabilizers.
>>
>>55272348
If you don't want your keys that are larger than 2u to be wobbly pieces of shit, you sure as hell should
>>
>>55272412
There won't be any keys larger than 2u, that's why I'm asking.

hey /mkg/, planning to get the rapid-i as my first mech keyboard, is it any gud for a first?

Is it possible to put new keycaps on? Im gonna go for the browns, and put in O rings to make it quiet.
>>
>>55272728
No. Get a Model M or F.
>>
>>55272748

No thanks, I dont want my friends to think im autistic and watch anime, so yeah. Also space is pretty important for me, thats why I went for tenkeyless
>>
>>55272794
Most of the anime watching bellends on here have some small ass keyboard with miami keycaps.

Look up Model F Kishaver, Model F77, and Model M SSK.
>>
>>55272828
give me 1 good reason to go for a keyboard that looks like that.
>>
Can anyone describe the difference in feel between Topre and Cherry?

I'm a poorfag so I can't afford either yet.

That looks like absolute shit you bent table motherfucker.

LOL can't afford it m8?
>>
>>55273046
I have 2 customs from Korea already, why would I want some shitty old keyboard that looks like crap?
>>
>>55273104
I'd rather wonder why someone with two korean customs wants to buy a cooler master.
>>
>>55273104
You'd buy asian chinkshit customs over a good old IBM? Fuck off.
>>
>>55273126
im the guy who wants to buy the coolermaster, never ahd a mech keyboard before. But yeah I guess its bait, im gonna buy it.
>>
>>55273162
I see.

Cooler masters are quite fine, the non-backlit ones are better, but the one in question is just fine too. Go right ahead and enjoy your purchase.
>>
>>55273126
What?

>>55273143
It's gookshit, not chinkshit. Spend some more time on 4chan and maybe you'll figure it out in due time pleb. And the "asian chinkshit" you berate is 10x higher quality than your ugly dumpster crap.
>>
>>55273162
You're going to buy it then eventually realize there's better shit out there. Buckling Springs, Topre, or Alps blue are arguably the best.
>>
>>55272973
I'm not a fan of super super small keyboards with neon key caps but that thing is fucking ugly man
>>
>>55273200
One of my boards is 30+ years old and still going strong. They're more reliable than your asian 'custom' shit.
>>
>>55273200
>What?
You're in a conversation regarding as to whether anon should buy a cooler master keyboard or not.
>>
>>55273218
Seriously? I think the thing is stunning.
>>
>>55273225
It's also been used by god knows who. But sure, whatever floats your boat and satisfies your kinks. Make sure you smash your keyboard in gamer rage to showcase it's reliability.

>>55273226
Not the same guy. I just think the keyboard looks fucking ugly.
>>
>>55273266
That's why you clean your keyboards Anon.
>>
>>55273207
My current keyboard is shitty and too big. I just need something small, simple and with backlight, white prefered. I thought I would go with mechanical.

I think I'll have faith in anti-bacterial cleaning products, I do appreciate your concern though.

coolermaster guy here, quick question

Is asian custom made stuff expensive? whar sources to use to buy?
>>
>>55273293
Poker 3? there is a white backlight on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Keyboard-Coating-Keycaps-Mx-Blue/dp/B014T4NR7U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1466976141&sr=8-2&keywords=poker+3+backlit
you can get different switches of you want.
>>
>>55273344
>Is asian custom made stuff expensive?
What the fuck do you think?

>whar sources to use to buy?
Buy a plane ticket to Korea and go to a keyboard shop.
>>
>>55273293
There's nothing wrong with the keyboard you posted, I just think there's better boards out there. Avoid asian custom shit.
>>
>>55273362

There could be only one true ortholinear layout.

It's time for you to decide:
Planck or Terminus Mini?
>>
>>55273463
I want an ortholinear TKL.
>>
>>55273463
>There could be only one true ortholinear layout
That's not correct please stop saying that

On an unrelated note, I'd probably opt for the terminus mini since those larger modifiers seem a whole lot more appealing, but I could see the benefit of having two sets of side-modifiers with the plank.

>>55273476
Those are both TKL. Though you could also build an ortholinear 80%
>>
>>55273500
>please stop saying that
it's the first time i said that
i just can't decide
>>
>>55273500
I don't see any number/function row or a navigation cluster.
>>
>>55273528
Maybe you're just blind?
>>
>>55273528
Do you see a ten-key?

Hence TKL: Ten-key less

>>55273518
Please don't say it again.

And just get both, it's not like you can ever have enough keyboards anyway.

It's ok. Don't go for browns with o-rings. There's barely any diffference. Also I'd buy clears if there are any rapid-is with clears since they are like better browns.
>>
>>55272970
they don't feel anything similar
it's really hard to describe how topre feels but it's harder to start pressing but once you start it's really easy to go down
topre > mx or mx clones
