The fuck are you supposed to do with 1 Terabyte of storage, let alone on an SSD.
Do you have any use for this amount of storage space /g/ while still needing to be accessed quickly, and if so what is it?

You ignored the warnings. Now you can bathe in the tears of regret.

I could really use that much fast storage. I would install a bunch of software vst's (virtual musical instruments). Some of those vst's can be 50GBs just for a single patch. Playing an orchestral score with a high end VST for every instrument part would use a boatload of memory, i can easily see using 400gb at a time casually. My favorite piano vst alone is a 45gb sample library, for a single grand piano voice

Pretty much this, my girlfriend works in advertising at a media company and she needs a mac, needs heaps of SSD storage, needs 32GB of ram and needs a fast processor. You don't need this kind of set up for games or data hoarding.

If you're getting paid by the hour it ends up being cheaper being able to render large files more quickly rather than paying employees to sit around browsing reddit/4chan/tumblr instead while waiting for shit to finish

Not really. You can edit 4K video on a fucking MacBook.

The MacBook plays games with the footage to achieve that speed like re-rendering the footage into ProRes in the background, if you dont want to transcode before working with your files than the extra ram and processor help a lot.

And even then, the more you can store in system memory, the better. The 2015+ MacBook can get away with less ram because its PCIe based SSD has writes of like 2+ GBps or something crazy like that.

My vision for the future of computing is a grand unification of memory, sorted by a hierarchical tier of speed:

Fast and expensive
>Registers
>L1 cache
>L2 cache
>L3 cache
>RAM
Non-volatile starts here:
>XPoint / non-volatile RAM
>NVMe NAND / fast flash
>Platters / bulk flash
>NAS / NFS / RBD
>Online backup / cloud
Slow and plentiful

Right now you can sort of approximate this by using swap + layered bcache + networked block devices with online synchronization

But in the future, I wish for even the programming abstractions to go away

Why would there be any confusion about the meaning of the SI prefix ‘G’ which has been established for decades?

I mean, it's not like they're defining what the ‘V’ in ‘5.0V’, the ‘A’ in ‘1.5A’ or the ‘S’ in ‘IOPS’ mean - these are well-established SI units that anybody with an even remotely educated background will understand. Yet for some reason they choose to define the ‘G’ in ‘GB’. Why?
>>

It doesn't even make sense for them, it's a waste. Just keep a few of your most played games on your SSD and the rest on HDDs. You can always move them around if you start playing a different game more.

Sorry I've never heard of mpd, I'll have a look though. Do you also get lost because you mistake a km for 1024 meters? What about a TeV for 1099511627776 eV?
>>
>>55226831
There aren't two different GBs. There's a GB, and there's a GiB.
>>
>>55226870
>The term gigabyte is commonly used to mean either 10003 bytes or 10243 bytes. The latter binary usage originated as compromise technical jargon for byte multiples that needed to be expressed in a power of 2, but lacked a convenient name. As 1024 (210) is approximately 1000 (103), roughly corresponding to SI multiples, it was used for binary multiples as well.

>In 1998 the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) published standards for binary prefixes, requiring that the gigabyte strictly denote 10003 bytes and gibibyte denote 10243 bytes. By the end of 2007, the IEC Standard had been adopted by the IEEE, EU, and NIST, and in 2009 it was incorporated in the International System of Quantities. Nevertheless, the term gigabyte continues to be widely used with the following two different meanings:

Dual-boot/triple-boot OS?
Install games and apps for zero load times?

I have a 250gb SSD and I think its too small for me, 1TB would be great.

Exactly, you fucking twat.

I have no use for a drive that large (yet), as it just isn't necessary for me, and because of that, not worth the bump in price.

Man, games, lots of games!
I have 2TB of games on HDD's and only a 256GB SSD for storage (128GB SSD for System) and I have to pick which games I use on the SSD, copy, delete and move them all the time.

>>55227038
Fallout 4 for example loads 45sec on a HDD but only 5sec on a SSD, there's even utube videos for that.
I guess multiplayer games it's even better if you load fast, gives you more time to prepare for the game once loaded, pick guns, skills, etc.

No shit, Sherlock. What other words of wisdom will you bestow on us. Perhaps, you would like to let us know that water is indeed wet.

HGST already have 8TB (He8), in non-SMR, and 10TB, in both SMR (Ha10) and non-SMR (He10).

Why would you go for the Red Pro?

Hey I'm just pointing out how shitty your points are. Don't get mad at me just because your argument's falling apart you piece of shit.

It's not falling apart. You are just proving you are a retard. See: >>55226422
>To ensure you know they're talking about GB and not GiB

The entire point is that both are referred to as GB in common usage. Feel free to keep trying to argue semantics to save face though.
>>
>>55227171
Yes, they're both thought of as GB. My point is that it's not right, which you've already posted proof of. Goddamned moron.
>>
>>55227187
Doesn't matter if it is technically correct or not. It is common usage, and that is why the disclaimer is on it, which is what this entire conversation is about. Common sense also tells you that coffee is hot as fuck, but that didn't save McDonald's from getting sued for millions.

I just got one because I didn't want to have a bunch of drives for different types of media. I just need the SSD for windows and anything I'm working on and a HDD for storage.

>tfw i struggle to fill a 16gb ssd

it never goes below 2gb left

i think the largest bit of storage i own is a 500gb hard drive in a laptop i dont even use anymore
>>
>>55227445
How old are you?
>>
>>55227445
I went a few years with nothing but a 16GB SSD in my laptop, even used Windows 8 so that was like 80% of the capacity off the bat
>>
>>55226817
OK, cheers for the advice, although I've already cured it with an ssd, I'll still look to that faster program see how I get along with it.

For constant writing sure.

But everything else it's quite good.

Not to mention all I do is play video games. I don't do any professional work on my $2000 PC.
>>
>>55227445
>>55227675
How? My desktop alone has about 2TB of storage which is full, my server has 4TB which is about 30% full.
>>
>>55227861
I really don't know, things sure have changed over the last few years. Now I've got ~7TB in a server and adding another 4TB soon. This was even before I had a server, so all I had was either inaccessible or on that 16GB SSD.

I bought 2 "new" crucial SSDs, 120GB + 256GB for cheap. turns out they are "reconditioned". did I fuck up? if so, how badly?
>>
>>55217143
>while still needing to be accessed quickly, and if so what is it?
I got two reasons:
A few hundred GBs of PDFs and postscript that must be searched quickly for text strings.
Strace logging.
>>
>>55217143
No, I would never buy a 1TB SSD. Even when SSDs get to the point where they're the same price per gigabyte as a hard drive, I'll still only buy 250GB drives for the OS and then a storage HDD.

If nothing else, simply for the fact that anything I'm storing that takes that much space both doesn't need to be fast, and I can't "afford" to lose. Long term storage should always be on a hard drive because even if it dies you can scrub data off of it.
>>
>>55221589
I'm the guy you responded to, yes I do - I have a "backup_pool" of 21TB, that is brought online and rsynced weekly by an arduino.

As others said, RAID isn't backup :)
