I currently do Business Intelligence for a small tech company, but I'd like to be a software engineer- the pay is better, and I find the work really interesting.
I don't have a computer science degree, but I have good python and SQL, and a little java so that's a start, though obviously I have a long way to go.
What's the next step if I wanted to work as an engineer? What should I focus on?
find a group of hobbyists to be your peers and help get you into jobs
or chase the degree

I'm pretty friendly with the engineers at work, so that's a good place to start I guess, thanks
In terms of learning though, what should I be working on? Backend stuff seems a bit more appealing to me

software engineers are generally responsible for much more than just programming
Lol. Business intelligence is much more niche than being a developer. Dunno what you're thinking m8.
