2 extra icons on either side.
If you insist on keeping them then I recommend getting GravityBox. The app has a setting where the navbar icons fade out after a few seconds so they're still there but don't show up until you touch one.

Unfortunately I need the status bar visible all the time.

The animation that hides it looks clunky (it suddenly moves the clock I've made), and having to swipe twice to get it to appear is annoying, anyway.

Now, if only I could get rid of that annoying pound sign.. (I use Nova to hide my clock on the homescreen)

That's a tough wallpaper to work with since it really doesn't leave a lot of space for icons or widgets around it, so I would recommend finding a different wallpaper.
Download klwp or kwgt and make your own clock/date widget
Hide the page indicator
Move the icons down next to the app drawer icon
Hide the status bar
