I have a file in my PC I just discovered that's password protected, so, /g/entlemen, how does RAR files passwords work? They have to be stored somewhere in the PC right? There has to be a trigger to disable the password? It was last modified 2012, the curiosity is killing me please.

It doesn't work like that, that RAR is encrypted using that password. All you can do is to guess.

Next time go to /sqt/
RAR files with passwords are encrypted with said password. Without it you can't extract the files. You can however let a bruteforce tool go loose on it, but that can take time, depending the size of the archive, and how much it's compressed.

RAR symmetrically encrypts the archive with a hashed version of your password. The encryption algorithm differs but afaik the most used are AES-128 and PBKDF2.
The password has to pass more than 200k SHA-1 rounds (with a 64bit salt) before it's used to encrypt the archive.
You have literally no chance to "crack" this archive without brute-forcing the password.
There are however good winrar brute-forces with CUDA and OpenCL support.
