My criteria for "usable" might be different from yours, but I can do about 80% of what you can do on a newer OS like Windows 8.1 or 10 - and that's only because certain software has dropped support for XP.

Yeah, security might be a problem but I've been running the same install for about 6 years now and there hasn't been a single problem. I still occasionally scan just in case but everything has been okay.

>turn 25 yesterday
>see some millennials using windows 95
>'its prehistoric'
>>
>>54921296
So?
It'd be bad if they'd said "It's literally prehistoric".

Saying it's prehistoric is called a metaphor, and is a fairly simple linguistic tool which uses the framework of once concept and applies it to another for effect.

For example, if I say you're a walking sack of shit who doesn't deserve oxygen, you're not literally fecal matter, you just share enough properties of fecal matter to make the metaphor valid.
>>
>what is a modem xd xd xd
People don't realise they're still using modems. People just refer to internet as 'the wifi' and their router/modem combo as 'the internet box'
>>

This is a thread about millenials criticizing slightly younger millenials
>>
Why didn't they tell the kids that you used to have to install USB Mass Storage drivers?
>>
>>54921398
'Literally' is used to signify that something is not a metaphor.

Figuratively is more or less the opposite- the explicit pointing out that it is. That it is not not a metaphor.
>>
>>54919951
>I see a lot of things on the internet like "haha windows 95 sucks"

>>54919951
This format wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for all the wannabe actors. Everyone tries so hard to act cool and interesting, it's disgusting.
>>
>>54921424
Not that guy, but I take "literally" as to mean "remarkably similar, with similar qualities of.." in sentences like "X is literally Hitler".

I'm not pleased with all the "literally" being thrown around either but words change over time whether you like it or now; for the better or for the worse.

I'm ESL so I probably didn't get your point, but I felt like I had to reply.
>>
>>54921424
Which is why literally used as a metaphor (Someone is "literally on fire" for someone who's on a winning streak) removes the major tool for saying that something is not metaphoric, causing a collapse as anything said can be a metaphor.
If someone is literally on fire do you get a bucket of water or congratulate him?
>>
>>54921462
No, words don't change over time, you fucking underage pile of shit. Words that have a specific goddamn meaning don't change because it dilutes that fucking meaning. You're just an underage little Dumbest Generation moron that wants to use his generation's lazy "literally means anything I want it to" bullshit.

>>
>>54921483
But honestly, people now use 'actually' to mean non-metaphoric.
At least until that gets run into the ground too.

Man, so and so is actually hitler.
Literally is stronger than actually.
For example, a clone of hitler would actually be hitler, but it wouldn't literally be hitler.
>>

>Only Hitler is literally Hitler.

>>54919951
I do remember using Windows 95 a couple times. But I was a toddler at the time. The "It's now safe to turn off your computer" prompt was surprisingly nostalgic.

Nothing from this video is at all surprising though. At most, the fact no one knows what a "modem" is, is a bit worrisome, but hey, it just shows that their only real access to the internet is through their phones.

>>54921462
So, if "literally" suddenly can also mean "figuratively", what word do you suggest we use when we actually mean "literally"? You can't just take a word away and leave a hole in it's place. This is not like using the single word "phone", first for cellular phones instead of just landline phone, and now for smartphones. It's like taking the word "red" and change it so it can also mean "green" without inventing a new word to describe something that's just red.

TL;DR: the argument "language changes over time" does NOT work for "literally=figuratively"

I feel old like time even though a few things come into play:

-my first PC was a Pentium II
-my first way of accessing internet was through a USB SpeedTouch modem (yes,a USB modem. Whoop-de-fucking-doo,56k rocks.)
-until 2007 I have used a slow as hell Pentium 3,upgrading straight to a LGA775 Celeron 440
-I have actually build about 3-4 systems around Pentium 133MHz,Pentium 233MMX,AMD K6-2 400MHz and K6-2 450 (most common variants here),a IBM CPU (don't remember the model on that,it was Socket 7 tho) and a Winchip IDT,this being around 2012 though, when I got a boatload of old stuff from a repair center (a side effect of that would be a few missing caps here and there, and EXACTLY EVERY COIN BATTERY socket removed. Dunno why)
-I have worked with almost every socket possible and CPU. I even had a 386 board at a point, sadly didn't work :( . I had Socket 3 stuff through my hands, and in order: Socket 7,370,462,478,754,AM2,LGA775. I haven't had the chance to work with 939 because where I live I couldn't find any 939 board, let alone CPU at all
-I even have old and new cards like S3 Trio 64,GF2 GTS 32MB AGP,MX440 64MB AGP,FX5500 128MB,8500GT 256MB,Radeon 9600 256MB,Radeon HD3450 512MB
-at this exact moment,I still have a CRT along my 22" LCD (which has a pretty spartan selection of ports - JUST A FUCKING VGA PORT,NOTHING ELSE.)

Should I worry? Here, have a picture of a K8N-E Deluxe motherboard I currently have to work with.

Then again, these kids don't want to know about things like this.

A car is the thing you get in, press a pedal, turn the wheel and it takes you to the mall.
A computer is a thing that you tunr on and it lets you see your facebook updates.

Nope,it was actually near new condition.

But yes, damn those batteries to hell,CR2032 rules.

I even had a Socket 3 ASUS PCI/ISA board (so 486 at that point) which again did not work, and I have to blame one of the stupid tantalum caps (same type of caps responsible for temporarily knocking out one of my CRT TVs. Easy fix on the TV though, just pull it off since it was acting like a Y cap of sorts (like on a ATX PSU) and replace the lytic cap (when the tantalum failed,it also took out a crappy 1000uF lytic, replaced with a good Nichicon HD cap - those guys at Nichicon do quality caps) and it worked.

I went to three different elementary schools and none had Apple IIs or Macs. The first had Tandy 4000s, the second had IBM PS/2s, and the third had some kind of late 90s PCs with Windows 9x.

XP never came on floppies. No version of Windows after 95A did.
>>
Also the floppy edition of 95A was missing some things like Internet Explorer and the disks were not standard 1.44MB, they used a slightly enhanced 1.7MB format.
>>
>>54929182
The blurb about "parts of the Windows 95 UI being 16-bit", which I presume you sourced from Wikipedia, is bullshit - which anyone who has ever used a kernel mode debugger in Windows 95 would know..

>It doesn't cost anything to learn
Opportunity cost, they would rather just seek mindless pleasure instead. Some people on /g/ use Linux while others refuse to use anything other than Windows because that's what they're used to using, some people on /k/ reload their own ammunition while others bitch about it and go on about how much their spare time is worth while posting on 4chan.
>>
>>54929564
It is mostly 16-bit code, a lot of it reused from Windows 3.x both for performance reasons and due to time constraints.

>we are the elite
Most of us are tech enthusiasts or work in IT, i don't have any reason to know anything about that stuff, but i do because otherwise i might seem dumb even if i'm good at IT.
>>54929323
>people have no reason to pursue knowledge
Thankfully you are here on /g/ shitposting, otherwise i might be worried you actually reproduced

You only use your pupils for seeing. They're quite.. small, as you might recall (check a mirror). All the 'white' and colored parts is just support material and kind-of the backside of the mirror-like structure within the eye cavity,.
>>
>>54929557
Although it's undocumented, the DOS FORMAT command in Windows 9x does also let you format 1.7MB floppies.
>>
>>54929626
We might use the pupils to see but at that distance my eyelashes actually block off most of my vision, i'd say for girls it might even be worse because they usually have longer ones

They generally don't.

Way to take this shitty b8, /g/.

>the DOS FORMAT command in Windows 9x does also let you format 1.7MB floppies
Well, that would have been nice to know when I was younger. In particular for the time I installed Windows 98 from floppies.
>>
>>54922343
They did that in the Apple II video as well.
>>
>>54929715
I fucking knew it.
I actually remember reading about it in elementary school, and when i told that to my class i remember a teacher telling me it wasn't true.
Can't seem to find a source that isn't shit like yahoo answers with shit like "my dad has longer eyelashes than me" tho

Why can't Game of Thrones have realistic pubic hair?
>>

Well that guy does have a point, even if it's a bit fucked up.
There's really no reason for people nowadays to seek knowledge about different CPUs or try and figure out how things work.
You just push a button and stuff werks.
Just like there's no reason for anyone to study which point and shoot 250$ camera is the best one.
They're all good, so you can just grab one and you'll get good enough results.

Don't take me wrong, I don't support that retarded way of thinking in the least, and I'm all for self improvement.
Actually this modern way of thinking and non existent attention spans have made it borderline impossible to teach even the willing people new skills.
But looking at it totally objectively, people simply have less and less reasons to look into these things.
>>
>>54929846
>no reason for people nowadays to seek knowledge about different CPUs
I guess, but i don't ask people if they know the difference between different kind of sockets and what the 12th pin does on each of them.
Knowing that "it's the thing that does the math in computers, it gets really hot" would be enough, maybe knowing what is the unit to measure how fast they are so they can go "wow, pc are now x times faster than 20 years ago"

You guys are a little confused. Normally FORMAT will not format such a disk, but there was a TSR you could install that lets you do it. In which case, use FORMAT A: /N:21 /T:80.

OS's don't count unless they have a port of DOOM

Oh god no, where the /fuck/ does this meme come from?

Go to your local recycler some time, you might have to try a couple times but eventually you'll come across an old DOS box, grab it, plug it in and see just how retarded the average computer user has always been.

>drives have their letters scribbled on them with permanent marker
>every port, despite being generally unique and easy to match to their respective peripherals with cursory visual inspection, is crudely labeled in permanent marker

>boot process is cluttered by a million third-party drivers and other utilities that slow it down to a crawl
>"what's a file system?" the previous owner presumably never asked themselves as they dumped everything into C:\
>determining their software upgrade history is as easy as following a trail of half-assed directory deletions and empty trees until you eventually find the program they once belonged to co-existing with a bunch of malformed, unreadable Lotus 1-2-3 documents in a folder named "ASDFDF~2"
>in the event they've installed Windows 3.1 (god help us all), the program manager is an uncontrollable clusterfuck of dead shortcuts and cluttered folders rendered even more unreadable by whatever variant of the "Hotdog Stand" theme they've chosen
>in they event they haven't, it's probably all wrapped up in some god awful menuing system

The average home computer user in the '80s and '90s knew just enough to run the software they needed to run, nothing more or less. Command-line environments aren't difficult to use when that's all there is, really all you need to know to use DOS is the CD, DIR, and the name of whatever the fuck you're running on it, which usually wasn't that much, the average PC was being used for maybe one or two pieces of software.

This is kinda sad. I'm 33 and I got my start with pc's that had Windows 3.0 and MS Dos 5.0 My first pc was an IBM 80286. Got a dot matrix printer along with it. Only mass storage it had was a 3.5 floppy drive and a 30mb hdd. Loved that old thing. Few years before I sold it I upgraded the os to Windows 3.1. I've used every windows os since then (except ME, Vista, and Win 8/8.1 cause they sucked, & Win 10 cause no need to upgrade from Win 7)

The part that actually stores the data inside the disk is floppy. That's where the name comes from. It's to distinguish it from hard disks.
