It's not too bad these days.

I was running two GTX460's in SLI for awhile and most all games I played ran fine with no issues.

I got them on sale as well $150 each I think and combined they had nearly the same performance as a 480 on 1080p games.

If yes itr supports SLi or crossfire, but i would do a simple reasoning:
You take a powerful card now, and you obtain the power of the crossfire of three lesser cards
With a single card, in the future you can always buy another card, at an inferior price, and almost double your power, and that is something you can't do you buy from the beginning middle-low range cards. that's what i would do, and what i will do

I'm not a game tester but I can confirm I never had a problem with CF.
DX12 and Vulkan will support multi GPUs and use what called SFR(Split Frame Rendering) This should stop all the current multi GPU problems.
