You do realize it the power reserve is up it will get dragged all over the dial real fast? Aka you would have to buy a new one.

Remove the back, push the stem into time setting, press the stem release button and careful lift the movement. Remove the broken bit of lume and reseat the movement.

I live in London so it's a bit of a trek to get to Shane. I would take it to someone local, but a lot of the watchmakers here have never seen a Seiko movement, and those that have usually give you insane turnaround time (like 2 months).

Speaking of servicing, I also bought a Vanac-esque Lord Matic Special. Got it for a song, little over $100 freedombux shipped, dial and case look great but the original faceted crystal is completely ruined. I want to ask the fat Torotonian where he found the sapphire one for his own LM.

Well that's a bummer. I can't get any watchmakers to look at the older JDM pieces i find here, besides one that lives rather far away. Luckily, for slav watches i know an old watchmaker that worked on these watches back in the USSR.

Neat find though, is that the bronze dial model? Also i think he said he found a sapphire for his KS not the LM.

"Vintage" can simply refer to the year the thing in question was made - a wine's vintage, for example (the etymology of the word involves wine).

You know, I never really thought about that until just now. I remember choosing this dial design because it was one of the styles that could be seen in low light.

It's not totally fucked, London is only a two hour drive from Toronto so it is still very much within reach. I can combine a watchmaker visit with visits to friends, but I can't just drop by anytime unlike our resident Lord Maticfag.

As for the LM I got, it's a blue dial with lume marks. Really neat 70s look but not totally "out there" like a legit Vanac. If you have a copy of the 1974 Seiko catalogue handy, it's the middle model on the second page of Lord Matics. And speaking of the catalogue, holy shit the number of models with 56 calibers far outnumber the 52 caliber. No wonder it's so hard to get exactly the one you want, Daini was being way out-produced by Suwa.

How's the Weekdater, by the way? You gave it a servicing?

>>54851817
Normally this reference isn't very expensive, as there are several in ebay below the 2k mark. However, the fact that this particular example was actually untouched for almost 50 years added a few more grand to the price.

>>54854047
That's a shame m8, especially since the watch looks in a decent condition and would be a pleasure to wear.

I have a friend in Mexico's City -way closer to you, and cheaper- that knows his way around GP's, Omega's and Accutron's tunning fork calibers -since they're basically the same- that could probably help you getting it fixed to great working conditions. Would you be interested?

Weekdater runs fine, so there isn't a need to service it for now. Seller said it was serviced in February and it seems squint eyes wasn't lying.

Day to day performance is about +10secs, seller said average rate is +8sec and the graph shows about that. Plus no beat error at all. My only grief with the 6206 is that you can't quickset the day, and the tiny crown makes it a pain to set the time when needed.

Also, are we talking about the vol/1H1 or vol2/H2 print of the catalog?

Do any of you guys have experience with pin-lever escapement movements? I have my eyes on a piece on Ebay that I'm fairly sure has a EB8021/8022, which is a pin-lever, 23 jewels movement.

Opinions seem kinda split on from what I can see, some mean pin levers are PoS:s that can't be serviced, and some mean they're sturdy and accurate.
>>
The second hand on my seiko skx009 fell off the center pin thing. How difficult would it be for me to replace this? The smallest tool I have is a tiny flathead for fastening screws on eyeglasses.
>>
>>54857058
They're PoS, but you will find highly jeweled Swiss pin-lever movements, most notably BFG. I think there was some law that a Swiss movement maker could either manufacture pin-pallet or Swiss lever movements but not both. So a few manufacturers who initially didn't have the tech for making pallet forks ended up making jewelled, okay-ish movements with pin-levers.
>>

Is this modded or actually available? Because I really dig the black / blue bezel seikos

The crowns in the Gen1 were a bit of a weak point for sure. Mine is a Gen1 but it has Gen2 bezel, pushers and crown so I anticipate no issues. It has gained half a second since I replaced the battery two weeks ago. I was asking some questions on the WUS forums, and one guy had the Gen1 X-33 for 16 years and has experienced zero problems with it, so that's a good sign.

I got it only last month, traded in my Sinn for it. It was due servicing in a year or so anyways.

Does /wt/ have any nice watches from AliExpress?

I'm not really that interested in "chronometers" with stickers instead of dials, nor in Rolex replicas or shitty Patek ripoffs, but stuff like pic related perhaps - simple, without chink shit.

The pictures are nice, but should I toy with chinks when it comes to my time pieces?

Strapcode, they also sell on amazon.
>>
>>54856519
I think it is in Volume 1.

I wish all my old Seikos came nicely serviced like yours. But they all seem to have great power reserves at least (my Lord Marvel runs for a good 42-45 hours without being touched) and are otherwise in mechanically flawless condition so I can't complain too much.

I am surprised that a watch which places so much emphasis on showing the day of the week ("weekdater") wouldn't have a quickset. Does it hack or hand wind at all?

>>54857058
The Bulova Caliber 11 is a pin-lever escapement, and one of the most reliable automatic movements ever made. They can be horribly abused and neglected, and still keep okay time. The automatic winding mechanism in particular is just about unbreakable.
>>
>>54858079
No specs on the movement for +/- seconds per month? I like the first one you linked. I ordered two Casio fakes on ebay from China sorted by cheapest price and I ordered a real one from Singapore.

It's the earlier 6206 cal, they don't hack nor do they handwind but at least the date can be quickset. The 6218 movements hack but still lack the day quicksetting. Though i must say that the finishing on the hands, indices and dial is the best i've ever seen.

I haven't had a chance to test out the PR on the Weekdater, but the LM special usually does upwards of 40hours.

This is such a small wolrd.

We weren't properly neighbors per sé, but I spend various summers of my young life in Tenerife, with my spanish older cousins. This was almost 20 years ago, and I had a blast. Loved there. In fact, I lost my v-card there with the cutest girl you have ever seen. :^)

My younger cousins used to live with my aunt in Barcelona, so I spend a lot of time there also. :^)

When I say that most spaniards don't believe in their legal system I'm mainly thinking about my grandfather. He was born in Spain and he is now pushing ninety, but he still holds the legal rights of a -probably- multimillion lawsuit against the gov for reparations during political persecution, but he doesn't want to do anything about it. He escaped from Spain more than sixty years ago, and he swears he'll never go back. If he dies, the legal rights die with him.

And I have met several other people thinking the same way, that spanish courts won't do anything for them either...

Anyway, I wish you the greatest of luck in your future career, colegue!!

Cheers to both of you!!

Every authorized dealer I've spoken to keeps telling me to avoid buying it from unofficial sources. Obviously trying to make a buck, but is there any merit to their concerns?

Also does Omega have a lifetime warranty? If so what exactly does it cover ?

it's basically of the same quality as the watch you already own, just another dial and painted blue hands. It's just 9€ while you probably paid 15€ for the other one, why would you call it a better replica?

Most people who buy an expensive watch will take care of it and will have it serviced etc. Look on Chrono24.com for the ref number 3876.50.31. It's like the eBay for expensive watches. I've used it twice and zero complaints.

Out of curiosity, what's the attraction to you over the moonphase complication added instead of the usual moonwatch face?

Get it second hand from a reputated seller. You won't get the cheapest price, but you'll get the most secure one.

Remember, buy the seller, not the watch.

Thank you. Didn't know about chrono24.

I just think the moon phase is gorgeous. The traditional speedmaster is a work of art as well, but the moonphase variant grew on me. The more I looked at it at the store the more I loved it.

Also for some reason the speedmaster doesn't feel or look like a 42mm watch in person. Which I like. It almost looks like 40mm when it's on a wrist.

Beautiful little machines.

I have several high-end watches m8, between vintage and modern, over fifty by now, so I don't normally use an especific watch "daily".

However, I have put my Speedy thru a lot of punish over the years and it has responded well. I still have to pay big bucks for a full service after it, though.

No, I had never insure it.

Rolex has one of the longest warranties that I'm aware of at 5 years. Even that only changed within the last year or two, they used to be 2 years which is pretty standard in the industry.
>>
>>54860042

One of the pluses about Omega is if you do official servicing etc, they guarantee parts for 30 years. There is a limited warranty as far as I'm aware post-service or repair, but aside that and the warranty on a new one, that's it.

I tried on the OG Moonwatch (or the modern one nowadays) and it felt a lot smaller. Even the 45mm X-33 Skywalker did not feel like a large watch, and 38-42mm is my wearable size range. My Gen1 X-33 doesn't feel like a 42mm watch either.

Okay. I usually only had two watches at any one time. One robust but cheap enough that it won't bother me if it gets destroyed, and a classier one for daily work week wear.

Even though my job is an office environment, watches can still experience some wear which is why I asked.

Yes. Never better than positive displays. Only sometimes equal.

The only good Casio negative display is picrelated, yellow on black.

It also helps that the watch is black since all your focus goes to the numbers

Also, mind you, a huge factor on readability is how close the module is to the glass of the watch.

A glass that is far away from the screen will make the watch almost unreadable.

I'm very picky about dents or marks. I know you could polish it but why is that frowned upon?
>>
>>54867467
Because finding something vintage without scratches is unlikely and expensive, and it's just going to get scratched anyways and eases worry in that regard.

Polishing ruins the original finish (the above has the brush lines), and smooths over the original sharp clean edges of the case.

I'm currently considering a Seiko diver, since I have some Seiko enthusiasts at my disposal here let me ask; how exactly does "Hardlex" compare to a sapphire or mineral crystal? I'm sure it's not something I'll be able to polywatch, but how resistant is it to scratching? More than mineral but less than sapphire?

I'm more worried about scratching than shattering.
>>
>>54850592
Why wouldn't there be? It looks good, is always accurate, doesn't require maintenance unless you use it for so long that the battery craps out, has a sapphire glass crystal and is the cheapest watch I know of that uses titanium in its case.
>>
>>54871371
It's pretty much seikos version of mineral crystal

You don't typically get Sapphire on dice watches because they are more prone to shattering when knocked, I'm not sure how well they go under pressure either

But yeah, my brother has a seiko hardlex crystal watch and he hasn't put any scratches on it

I dropped the names guys, was causing a bit of a ruckus
>>
>>54871371
Your assumption is correct. Sapphire is more scratch resistant than hardlex; hardlex is more scratch resistant than ordinary mineral crystals. However, hardlex is much close in terms of scratch resistance to sapphire than plain mineral. In the couple of years I've had my monster (it's taken its fair share of abuse as a beater watch) the only scratch is single very hard to see hairline scratch. The scratch is pretty much impossible to see unless you know where to look for it and requires tilting the angle of the watch under a light source to find it.

Overall I'm happy with the hardlex. I have no clue about the efficacy of polywatch on hardlex. Also if you feel the need to swap out the stock crystal sapphire replacements are available from dagaz watch ltd. and yobokies.

On a hardness scale, Sapphire glass is a 9, while regular watch mineral glass is around the 5 +\- on the manufacturer. Hardless is slightly above the 7 rating, so it's more scratch resistant than regular mineral glass and more shatterproof than sapphire.

>>54871798
Polywatch and such are only applicable on acrylic crystals, you really can't DIY polish hardlex easily. (Not impossible, just difficult).

So if it's scratched you gotta live with it or replace it, and it's it an SKX you can get a domed sapphire for it.

Bought these. None of them worked normally. Got money back for all of them. Gived em to local watchmaker. Watchmaker pierced the dial of watch in the middle. Took 11€ for servicing all of them. How bad did I go?

How much I can get a vintage Datejust for, €2000? It's either that or a bike. Fuck.
The explorer has always been the only Rolex I liked but lately I've been digging the Datejust as well.
Why not the Roman numerals one?

Hope the day I find the Daytona attractive will never come.
>>

Eh.

Besides the 2414 (or 2214?) Vostok i'm not a fan of either of these. Fake shturmanskie really looks meh. Top watch seems to resemble a Raketa or at least the hands do.

You'd be pretty close, I'm not sure how strong the euro is these days, I think you might be able to get a used one for around that

I'm not a big fan of the Roman numerals, just don't tickle my fancy that much, I'd prefer baton indicies. Too each their own

Hoping to buy myself an explorer someday. Wouldn't mind an explorer, a datejust, a submariner or an omega speedmaster professional for my first decent purchase, still a while away

Well not anymore, because it is the first ever movement I completed servicing. Disassembled it, ran it through the cleaning machine, replaced the busted parts from donors and oiled it, now it does a decent straight line on the timegrapher with a pretty wide amplitude. I feel good about myself, maybe tomorrow I'll start putting back together my Tissot-Omega movement.

Not really, I normally wear my watches confident that nothing will happen, thus, I don't develop any fishy or nervous behavior and, I guess, never attract any kind of attention towards them. More often than not I take the metro, train, subway, tube or whatever you name it and grab the bars with my left hand, so I end up exposing the watch I'm wearing. So far, I had never been mugged. I'm 6'1'' though, maybe that helps.

>Can you explain?
Well, the Chronometré Bleu has an unmatched sense of deepness because whe you're looking at it, it does feels like you're peeking at a calm pond or a shallow lake. Even the numbers written over the dial reflect on the bottom of the dial itself. If there is the tiniest imperfection between the layers of glaze or enamel, the effect is ruined.

As I was pushing my wallet in my jeans pocket I feel one hand around my right wrist pulling it up and then my wallet getting pulled. I let out a suprised cry, tighten my grip on my wallet and use my other hand to grab the mugger's arm. He lets go of my wallet and tries to flee but I pull him back, he loses his balance and falls on me, we both fall to the ground and then I manage to get on top of him and pin him in place. 6 cops patrolling on motorcycles were all over us 30 seconds later. They're not labor camps. They're essentially shelters that contain migrants entering Greece while they're identified, having their biometrics taken and while their asylum applications are reviewed. There is no "work". And they still can't behave.

Yesterday Afghans clashed with Pakis using knives and crowbars at the Lesvos "hotspot" (what we call the migrant shelter camps) of Moria, setting many tents on fire and many of them were sent to the hospital. They were free to roam around the island in the past as long as they checked in at the hotspot daily, but the greatly increased criminal activity, theft, mugging and break ins forced the authorities to contain them.

Rolex made the first waterproof watch.
They market by using people who face harsh conditions giving them a rolex and saying "write a story about how rugged and awesome you are like our watch"
Plus to be honest my sub has been bomb proof. Literally
