When you pull the cables, you make sure they don't cross other cables.
This means the cables are coming into the rack nicely.
I then group the cables in groups of 24 or 48.
I make the cables approximately the right length according to those groups.
The cables are now short enough so you can untangle them if necessary, binding them together all the way.
Now you have nice, managable groups, they don't tangle with other groups and you can trace them all the way from where they enter the room to where they should be connected.
If you are really anal about the placement, you use velcro, so you can loosen the cables so they don't tangle in the group.
It takes time, but it is worth it.
I usually spend 2-3 days wiring up a rack depending on how many cables obviously. (5-7 minutes per socket)

Be proud of your work.
Don't let people make you rush a job so you aren't satisfied with it.
Practice, makes it faster, but not easier.
If you have visible cables all the way, plan it out so you can group them all the way.
>>

Power conditioning is up-stream, and not at the rack level.

This is sitting in my office, not even 10ft from me. It's not silent, but it's not screaming either.

KVM, switch, 2x R610's, 2x D2700's pull a combined 12A at max load that I generate. In a month or so, the rack will be moved, be fed with two 220V 20A feeds, and I'll be able to run everything at 100% if needed.

Yeah this thread has got me intrigued. I mostly come to /g/ to talk about some mild programming and network configuration
I don't know much about any of this and have absolutely no idea where to begin but I really want to. What kind of field/position even deals with server racks and data centers, sys admins or something working for an ISP? It looks like there is a lot to it outside of just cable management

Got respect for cable runners, personally I just put a top switch in the racks and run a fibertrunk so I don't have to deal with cat cables longer than 3-4 feet.

>Blast. Thanks anyway, I'm trying to boot Windows from 5th SATA port with grub.

When I was running Server 2012 R2, I had a 250GB SSD on the 5th port. Each drive was set as an individual RAID 0, and I let storage spaces handle the other 4 drives, with the SSD as the OS.

I plan to make a nice sweet ass server set up eventuly in my home.

I would like to even create a local Proxy to store data from sites and places I frequent so I could save web data in transit and even block ads on a network basis at that point I presume and even get thinks like android APK's distributed to all of my devices quickly because after its been loaded twice the proxy would save it so all other times the file is requested it is loaded to the proxy. I think squid can do this.

I would also want some sort of powerful server to render DLNA Devices demands for video encoding on various play back devices. Plus a way to share the file media over the internet. "illegally"
Make a seed box and even make some tor points.

man but I would also want a crazy sever tower for my main workstation, and i mean like a system with four cores and like 128gb of ddr3 ram or something crazy wild like that with Raided SSD's and HDD's for backups and shit.

Fucking 4 CPUS holy shit think of just haveing two, thats way better then multicore guys.

Even though I know most games don't work with multi-cpus but hey you could run applications and they would be on separate cores.
>>
>>53445678
To train the cables most likely. Fresh cables have a tendency to twist every which way, especially if they've been tightly rolled up in storage.
>>

Not him but some of us dooooo!
Trick is to keep what you can powered off, centralise what you do need into minimal hardware with VMs, and go fanless wherever you can (TOR switch is a fanless gigabit procurve, for example).

>>53451592
Do you have carpet? If so, best to run it underneath. You'll need a kicker to help with putting the carpet back down again. What specifically do you want to know?
>>
>>53444980
what do you use it for?
>>
>>53451871
That's not bad idea, I like it but from

1) the living room
2) bed room
3) dinning room

It would all have to go through the kitchen to the washroom, which both have tile.

Basically, I just want that room to be a central server room. And I'll need to run cable from all the mentioned places above to that room.

I have no problem working with dry wall. It's just the whole running process I've never done before.

What I'm thinking is running 2-4 lines from each area to the attic. Then do some switch magic in the attic and run that to the other switch and server in the washroom.

Basically, if my rPi is running xbmc, it could mount via wifi, yes, but it's slow. So I'm trying to have every box near an available port, straight to the server and reserve wifi for phones, tablets, etc..

Specialised hardware platforms designed with the primary intention of running various daemons and services that service client requests. Most modern servers come in rack mount form factors, but some do not.

While the obvious intention of this thread is to see sexy rackmountables, yes, we all know that they can come in tower forms, and likewise general purpose computer hardware can be pressed into service as a server. That doesn't mean we want to see them - unless there's an interesting story, or the design or build is particularly noteworthy, it's just not worth posting about.

easiest way i do is is running it along a baseboard, sticking it under carpet where the floor meets the wall is also great, if you have attic access thats easy, just throw it all up there and drill down to where you want it, just open up the wall near the middle to get around the studs

Not server porn, but I didn't want to make my own thread for this question.

I found a server on CL with these specs:

HP 380 Server
14 Gb of RAM,
6 X 250 GB Drives
quad core Intel Xeon 3.20GHz processor
Raid 6

for $100.

That seems like too good of a deal doesn't it? I texted him and he still has it. Am I on my way to get raped, anons?

First, it's almost, but not quite, impossible to get something that doesn't support hardware virtualization anymore.

Onboard NICs are gigabit now, and work just fine. You won't run into a situation where the onboard NIC is inefficient.

There have been vulnerabilities in several virtualization and container platforms before, that allow a user on the virtual system to break out into the host. They are rare, and have generally been hard to exploit. Still, I wouldn't put my firewall on a virtual system. I don't have a problem exposing a VM to the greater internet though.

If your going to put everything on one box, put the firewall on the host. That may mean no pfsense, since BSDs are still trailing linix as virtual hosts, but it's the right way.

There are plenty of tiny boxes out there now, so you could easily get one just to act as your firewall, and have a separate, beefier box for virtualization

Search the pfsense forums for mini PC or zotac. Remember, your incoming internet speed couldn't saturate a 100baseT connection. You don't need dual onboard LAN. Using a USB ethernet adapter won't slow you down at all.

It allows you to remote into the power strip and turn on or off each plug individually, pretty neat stuff
