It depends of your needs.
>>
10/10 aesthetics
Shit/10 everything else
>>
>>51595679

Only one port on the entire machine, which will usually be filled by the charger.

Can't even plug a usb stick or external hard disk in without an expensive Apple dongle.

Shitty keyboard that is almost impossible to type on.

At least go for the Air - the "Macbook" is dreadful.
>>
>one usb-c port

have fun giving a presentation on low battery, since you can't connect to a projector AND plug in your laptop
>>
>>51595679
It's close to flawless, if you're looking for a portable laptop and don't need the power of a desktop replacement nor mind the lack of ports.

I am pretty happy with mine for sure.

>macbook air 11
Stop right there. It's inferior to MB is any way, saving few bucks for a shitty screen and bit more ports isn't worth it.

The only somehow viable alternative for maximal portability is some Core M Asus, which is few hundred bucks cheaper and overall pretty okay. Though you would have a much worse trackpad.
>>
>>51595749
>Shitty keyboard that is almost impossible to type on.
It's different from the ones in other Macbooks but pretty awesome in it's own way. Just takes time to get used to the shorter travel, on the other side it feels less swallow, more click-y and precise.
>>
>>51595679
if you are wealthy and you want a really posh enjoyable to use facebook machine then they are brilliant. macbook air 11 is shit.
>>

>>
>>51595785
>saving few bucks for a shitty screen and bit more ports isn't worth it.

I agree with the screen bit. Not so much the extra ports bit.

Considering that there isn't even an "normal" USB port on the Macbook I'd get the Air without ever thinking twice about it. It will just be a better computer when taking into consideration that you can plug a mouse in or an external HDD for time machine backups
>>
>>51595945
most people who post on /g/ are teenagers or college students. just because you have 1000 bucks in your bank account doesn't mean you can afford to be buying a 1000 dollar laptop. have you ever heard of a thing called personal finance
>>
>>51595836
That just means you're okay with eating shit.
>>
>>51595679
That one port thing is bullshit. It's like Windows 8's and Gnome 3's design, like "lets maek everythin simble :)", but in the end it's not even simpler, it just lacks features and is shit. Also the processor has throttling issues. I think you'd be better of buying a good convertible laptop/tablet with Windows.
>>
>>51595882
OP here, well I want some of the Apple suite software and I already have a desktop windows computer, but I also want it to be portable at the same time

>>
>>51596088

>>
>>51595999
Well, it obviously depends on what you're planning to do with it too. Just given the crappy screen, I'd say 11 Air is simply not viable given the price and one would be better off with the 13 one, that has other pros or some Windows alternative.

Also
>using mouse
>on Apple laptops
Why.

>>51596032
>have you ever heard of a thing called personal finance
If 1000 bucks break the bank, you're either extremely poor for first world standards and/or suck at financing.
Given that OP talks about ultrabooks, he/she is probably not that poor, since even the most shitty ones are around 700 bucks and if going up to 1400 makes a difference for you … you shouldn't even consider the 700 bucks option, since objectively both are overpriced and offer premium features one can live without.

Or tl;tr version: Poor fags should get some used Chinkpad.

>>
>>51596179
Because the mouse is still a better input device for work no matter how good the trackpad might be.

Regardless, not being able to plug in an external HDD or any kind of USB accessory is what kills the 12" MacBook for me.

Yeah, there is an accessory but it is just not good enough a solution
>>
>>51596364
Macbook 11 has more ports but worse screen, keyboard, track pad and case.

You can buy adapters online for USB C. Don't buy the Apple one, it's for norms who don't know any better.
>>
>>51596364
Consider that the base Air 11 got 4GB/128GB SSD though, MB got twice as much (and a much faster SSD too), so the price difference isn't THAT huge.

Also the screen on Air 11 was okay back in 2012, these days it's just shit compared to others. At least the 13" Air got better battery life and 16:10 screen, although the resolution is crap.

If ports is a huge issues for you despite adaptors/having desktop PC, rather pick the 13" Air.
>>
>>51596364
have you actually seen the macbook 11 in person? it feels so cheap and the screen is bad. its apples biggest rip off
>>
It's a nice netbook. It would be a good machine for light note taking or web browsing. It's not great, though. The keyboard is awful and the one port is a major problem.

It's competitive with some $300 netbooks. It's better than some and worse than others.
>>
>>51595679

I had my heart set on the new Dell XPS but after reading some reviews on Reddit it seems like there are quality control issues and that Dell have been misleading with regard to battery life.

It's still worse. They have a decent amount of travel. The Macbook keyboard has so little travel you may as well use a touchscreen.

This seems like the appropriate thread to ask. I've had macs in the past, but have been building my own machines since my first Cyrex 66mhz back in the day when I was like 7 or 8. I've been in the military for a few years and am getting out and going back to school.

I like nice things, and the price doesn't necessarily matter but I don't want to dole out money like a retard. I'm looking for something thin and light to carry for 12-16 hours a day for university and won't mind the daily jostle of a rather harsh urban bike ride on my mountain bike. Stairs, ledges, and there are a few rooftops I hot on the way some days for fun.

Anyway, I was looking at the Macbook originally which is why I came into this thread. It seems to have everything I'd be after and that screen is very nice. I'm also looking at a Lenovo X1 Carbon. What do you guys think between the two? Any other suggestions? I'd like to stay under $2k but I think that should be plenty. Already have a solid desktop setup I just built and an older Lenovo Y580 for mobile gaming. Thanks for the input.

One other thought. Consolidating devices is good, and my little sister is getting into gaming so I'd just give the Y580 to her this xmas.

Jesus Christ, retard. It's $950 base, $1100 with the RAM and SSD upgrade, and $1200 if you add a 1440p screen.

BUT... its performance is where you are afraid of putting it in your mind: low, very low. PDFs scolling smoothly? lol nope
Wanna compile something? Make a coffee and better drink it, too.
Want to stream some music while working on something other: prepare to charge in 30 mins.

So, it is very portable, is has a nice screen and a very nice keyboard, it looks kinda sexy. But especially the last two points are extremly dependent on the user's point of view....
>>
>>51598351

Face it, faggot. They are in the same weight class. The X1 Carbon beats the Macbook every way except weight, and the weight is very close.

A few minutes ago, screen quality was the only thing that mattered. Now weight is the only thing that matters. Next you'll be saying that the competition MUST be made of aluminum or it's shit.

This is what Macfags always do. Someone presents a machine that crushes the Mac in almost every single way, but is slightly worse in one area. Then the Macfag says that one area is ALL that matters and, even though the Mac is shit in every other way, it wins on this area.

Great! So you have to carry around a big bag of adapters. Some ultraportable.

>One of the best keyboards out there.
Denial is a powerful force.

If you happen to be the rare case who needs to use them, yes. It's a perfect compromise for everybody.

>Denial is a powerful force.
Yes, I can tell you fell for it.

WOW such convenience, great design, that sure sounds like a point in favor of the new MB
>>
>>51599758
Why the fuck would you do any of that on a laptop that's barely 1 cm thick? Jesus, you act like it's a surprise that the newest MacBook will underperform on serious 3D work.

Nice number, did you pull it out your ass? Dig deeper and you might find your dad's dildo.
>>
>>51601506
>Why the fuck would you do any of that on a laptop that's barely 1 cm thick?
I wouldn't. But I also wouldn't pay $1300 for a crappy Facebook machine.
>>
>>51601516
It seems the most likely one, wonder if there are numbers for adapters/MB sold somewhere, but it should be clear than anybody buying the MB, doesn't want the ports.
>>
>>51601481
The funny thing is that an adapter really would be more convenient with the new connectors. You've seen photos of laptops with nearly every port filled, right? Well, wouldn't it be nicer if you could leave all that stuff plugged into an adapter and just plug in one cable when you set your laptop at your desk? You haven't given this much thought, have you?

For the record, I don't own any Apple products, nor do I plan on buying any, but pushing USB-C adapters was a great move by Apple. It really does benefit everyone-- I'm really not going to complain when USB-C is standard on phones and I can carry a single adapter to plug my phone into any display and have all my shit right there instantly (without even needing a network connection, really).
>>
I got a retina macbook pro in 2012 and am still pretty happy with it, but currently there is absolutely no reason to get a mac. There are way better offerings from microsoft/samsung/dell.
>>
>>51601588

>Well, wouldn't it be nicer if you could leave all that stuff plugged into an adapter and just plug in one cable when you set your laptop at your desk?
You mean a docking station? Like the one that's been on my desk since 2007?

Apple is innovating yet again!
>>
>>51601616
>herpaderp docking station

Yeah, the shit you're talking about has no potential to ever compete with a station that only requires the device to have the most common interface on the face of the Earth. I'm talking about a unified docking station that will work with phones, tablets, laptops, fucking GAME CONSOLES, smart watches, literally anything you can fit a USB-C port on.

Take your autism somewhere else.
>>

So you want some sort of universal connector that will connect all your devices. That's a brilliant idea! Some sort of Universal Serial Bus, perhaps?

Oh, wait. We've had that since 1995.

INNOVATION!
>>
>>51601729
>Apple is innovating

They're not innovating; they're helping to create a market where technology like this can thrive. It shouldn't take much imagination on your part to figure out that any USB-C adapter Apple comes up with will be necessarily compatible with any non-Apple device that supports full USB 3.1, which means competing companies will need to create their own adapters as well.
>>
>>51601848
Nice strawman, bruh.
>>
>>51595679
If you need a general purpose computer it is great. Apple has always been reliable, if not the best (I type this in a 6 year old Macbook. Never had to pay a cent fixing anything).. That said, if you actually want to do shit with it (like gaming or any actual programming, etc.) you best look elsewhere.
>>
>>51601926
How is it a straw man? That is literally the purpose of USB: to be UNIVERSAL. Apple did not invent USB or the docking station.
>>
>>51601981
>Never had to pay a cent fixing anything
Be very grateful for that. If anything did wind up breaking, you'd have to throw the whole machine away.
>>
>>51595749
>Only one port on the entire machine, which will usually be filled by the charger.
It has great battery life, this is just blatantly unnecessary.

>Can't even plug a usb stick or external hard disk in without an expensive Apple dongle.
I hardly ever use these anyway. My main machine has plenty. If I want to back up to time machine, it's not really a big deal to take an extra ten seconds to plug it in the dongle. The fraction of the time I use my external disk doesn't justify a dedicated port. I like the slimness of the machine as well as the aesthetics and lack of unnecessary ports.

>Shitty keyboard that is almost impossible to type on.
In your opinion. I actually kind of like it. It's obviously not ideal, but it's worth it for the form factor it provides. It's not HURR SO SHITTY enough that it's not worth it for the form factor and lightness.

>At least go for the Air - the "Macbook" is dreadful.
Thanks for vomiting your opinions. I suggest you start a blog.
>>
>>51597243
Why would you have the dongles hanging on the machine all day? Are you stupid? Why don't you just fucking unplug it and put it in your bag?
>>
>>51602242
Unlike many others, Apple customer support isn't shit and easy available almost everywhere.

>>51601866
They dropping of obsolete technology counts as innovating though or at least as forcing the industry forwards, without Apple we'd still have dvd drives, ethernet and low res screens in the premium sector.

Give it three years and most of premium hardware won't have too many ports, wireless future is coming.
>>
>>51602425
>Apple customer support isn't shit
lel

Even if their "Geniuses" weren't brain dead, the device would still be out of warranty after six years.
>>
>>51602461
The geniuses are there for the plebs and sending the shit for fixing. The good thing is the availability.

Though yeah, six years is bit long, then again, keeping a hardware for so long is gimping oneself. The current MB people bitch about, is probably 50% faster than the thing the guy got.

The new MacBook would be powerful enough for me probably. I'm not paying that much for it though. Mac prices in Australia are insane at the moment, i don't think i can really afford to buy a new macbook any time soon anyway. My 2013 MBA still runs great though besides the screen being pretty low res.
