local Best Buy apparently has an open box epidemic so they took 20% off all the open boxes in addition to the already discounted open box price. I got talking about cars with a manager and he used a scratch on the underside of the otherwise pristine laptop to justify lowering the condition in the pricing system as low as it would go and made it cheap as fuck. Cool dude.

Came into black friday expecting to only get a 970 but I ended up getting $300 in blu rays and no 970 because there hasn't been a good deal.

>>51567224

I've been running a couple Sandisk SSDs (60 GB, just plain "Sandisk") and a Sandisk Ultra 128 GB for nearly three years in a couple of systems. They've been more reliable than other SSDs and the speed is "good enough"that I really can't tell the difference in practical use, only with benchmarks.

The Ultra II is reliable & getting into Samsung 850 EVO territory .... so. Yes. That's a good deal at today's prices.

Expect that SSD to dip under $100 around or shortly after Christmas.

I buyed a 970 because I have a 560ti and its shittiness is preventing me from playing games I otherwise would.

I would have bought a 380 or 390 instead, but I didn't want to upgrade my PSU. I'm impressed that the power draw for this thing is actually less than my 560.

Did I make the right decision?

I'm looking for a new tablet,
What's the best (in your opinion, or your favorite), <$300 USD tablet for comic reading? Only things I'll be doing with the tablet are reading / browsing the internet, Netflix, etc. I won't be playing games on it.

I'd ideally like at least 9 inches, with a high resolution (or does it really matter? Like some Samsung tablets have some low res like 800 x 1280 pixels,) and expandable memory would be great, but it's not a total dealbreaker.I like the Samsung Tab E, since it has expandable memory, but that resolution kinda bugs me a little.
Right now, I'm primary looking at the Lenovo Yoga's / A -10's. Since they have expandable memory, 10in screen, 1920x1080/1200 res, and I've got a Lenovo Y500 right now that I like, and I like the feel of the Yogas when I went to BB and tried them out.
Anyway, anyone else have any suggestions / ideas / opinions on which tablet to get?

Thanks -

Maybe this for $55?
Samsung is still much more of steal since it's known to be very reliable.
>>
>>51569346
I was thinking about buying one and putting it in an enclosure. Backup my videos once a month. Would that be a good idea?
>>
>>51569379
I have no idea. If it was a WD drive (not green) at that price, I wouldn't hesitate to buy.
>>
>>51568393
I used to think just like you. Until I started reading more and more on my phone, and then wishing I had a bigger screen. So I picked up a 7" Nook Tablet a few years ago at a good price. It's very handy to have the bigger screen some times. But then again, I prefer a small phone (4-5" screen) that I can slip in my pocket. I also have a ThinkPad for typing and doing productive work on the go, and then my full triple screen battle station. It's just a matter of having the right tool for the particular job at hand.
>>
>>51569286
Damn that's a good deal. I know it's slower than the popular SSDs, but is it noticeable? It's still a whole lot better than a HDD.
>>
>>51569368
>it's known to be very reliable
Reliability is negligible. Even "unreliable" brands still have sub 1% failure rates. If you want to pay 25% more cause that .50% lower failure rate means that much to you, then you're free to pay for it.
>>
>>51569346
People usually reference Backblaze to say Seagate is shit, but from their most recent dataset, the failure rate of model ST4000DM000 is 3.06% per year.

The one you don't want is the 3TB model, ST3000DM001, with a failure rate of 28.46% per year.
>>
>>51568684
I have that exact desk.

Its bigger than the pic suggests, but its pretty soild once you get it together.

Expect about 2 hours for assembly
>>
>>51569409
The Backblaze study has been debunked time and time again. Under no circumstances refer to it or use it as a citation.

If a company put out a drive with a >25%/year failure rate, they would no longer be in the business.

enjoy not even being able to hit SATA II speeds with that piece of shit. you should really only get a drive from a company that actually manufactures their own drives (micron, samsung, intel, etc.). kingston designed the V300 to use synchronous NAND, but shortly after it entered production, they had to switch to a different fab that could only offer asynch, which caused performance problems.

Got a nexus 6 64gb to replace my trusty Nokia Lumia 520. This old thing only has 512mb of ram vs the 3gb the nexus 6 has. It's going to be a huge upgrade.

Also got the HIFIMAN HE400i for 299$, not sure if it's still on sale but it's worth getting at that deep discount.

Yes, all you need is bread from the bread lines, water from the water lines, and a drab, colorless hovel in a sea of drab, colorless hovels.

This is true happiness, comrad.

Not him, and I won't participate in the shitposting, but this is a real problem. Society would be a lot better if people didn't consume so stupidly. Or actually people really need to just stop being such retards and savage emotional creatures in general.

Consumerism drives innovation.

Its why the USSR started out great than stagnated. Whats cool as shit in 1950 is fucking old busted shit in 1970.

Innovation leads to new shit which leads to cheaper old shit. Rich wants new shit always, middle will splurge and lower gets what they can.

Due to this, old tech thats still viable trickles down to the lower classes.
>>
>>51572406
Perhaps, but a drives will almost certainly respond differently to a stress test than to standard usage. A drive that shits bricks under tough conditions might last a decade in a comfy home PC.

And honestly, the fact that they had RMAs and refurbs in there completely discounts their entire results before you even get into the details.
>>
>>51569961
Get the fuck off my /g/, you ignorant plebe. You are cancer.

>>51569949
>company gets caught red handed lying to people and switching parts
>people still willing to buy their products
There's just no helping some people, anon.

This is why companies keep doing bullshit, anons. Because they know they can get away with it with enough people who are ignorant and don't pay attention. Usually, /g/ is better informed, but not neo /g/, apparently.
>>
>>51572515
>Consumerism drives innovation.

Ideally. Unfortunately in practice under the current form of capitalism, it doesn't happen perfectly like that. This is simple business and economics 101, as well as history if you go study stuff like trickle down economics, though that's more political, but your comment reminded me of that, and it has some relevance.

I think a modern example /g/ could attest to is Apple. Their design of "simple" and "clean" has led to things like the disappearance of the removable battery and sim card on Samsung's latest phones, overall movement in the whole industry favoring irrationally slimmer devices, to the point where it has an effect on durability of the device.

People are irrational and buy things based on emotions, in most cases, which is the main faulty assumption the reasoning that consumers necessarily push innovation.

INCREMENT THE COUNT
>>
>>51572488
Yeah, that's a given. Doesn't mean you can't talk about it. Unfortunately I guess the fact that it is a subject that has to be talked about explicitly shows how shitty the situation actually is.

>>51572652
Also, what >>51572585 says.
>>
>>51572526
Alright, fair enough.

I suppose I'm just a fan of Backblaze for trying to do something. Our purchasing decisions could be so much easier if manufacturers would just publish their goddamn failure rates, but of course their not going to do that.

Well nothing is perfect and there will always be snake oil salesmen but thats true of controlled socitiys anyways. The only difference is they are selling to the goverment rather than the populace.
>>
>>51572800
However, consumerism (capitalism) is the best way to innovation, historically.

Innovation is what drives the human spirit. To be anti innovation is to be anti human.
>>
>>51572800
To be sure, I never offered communism or other more socialist designs as an alternative. I think you're mixing me with the other anon.
>>
>>51572824
Yup, and as consumers and citizens, we should be wary of what companies and policy makers are doing that would play a role in impeding innovation. Unless you're a luddite of course - then go fuck yourself. As well, we should seek to inform and influence others to be beneficial consumers and good citizens instead of dumb consumerist sheep.
>>
>>51572652
>trickle down economics

We all stopped reading right there.
>>
great website stability there newegg
>>
>>51572897
Of course but expecting a great minority of the consumers to not be mindless sheep is folly. A better way to go about it is to create a sizable minority of consumers who are knowledgeable thus creating a market for good products. This is basically what happens in most capitalist countries

I have SLI 980 Ti's. Is G-Sync necessary? I want a monitor in 1440 @ 144Hz & 1ms or 4k @ 60Hz, and I'm gonna pull the trigger on Monday, but I'm not sure what I should do. I can get either a multimonitor set up, or a single good monitor.
>>
>>51573476
They also attempted to keep shopping after he died
>>
>>51573491
might as well get it. it's a decent feature, and you can't use freesync. then again, with that kind of horsepower you may want to opt to use ULMB instead in a lot of games
>>
>>51573579
I'm dumb. what's ULMB?

>>51573516
Fucking animals.
>>
>>51573589
Ulmb allows less than real life motion blur. It's uncanny how clear you can see.
>>
>>51573589
ultra low motion blur. closest thing to CRT smoothness you can get on an LCD

it's mutually exclusive with gsync/freesync though. you can only use one at a time. it somewhat reduces image qualty, and you need to maintain very high, steady FPS for it to be useful, but with two 980 TIs that should be no problem in most games
>>
>>51573605
ULMB is only available on G sync monitors though, right?
>>
>>51573626
freesync monitors can have it too. so technically you could buy a (much cheaper) freesync monitor and just run it in ULMB all the time, but there may still be situations where you want to use gsync instead. basically if you can't maintain steady 120+ fps in a game, gsync is more beneficial
>>
>>51573590
Animal is an understatement. These people are cancer.
>>
>>51573626
no, ULMB predated g-sync and freesync. It was originally part of nvidia's 3d spec, then people found out you could "hack" it to reduce motion blur for a CRT-like experience. now it's being marketed that way and improved by some manufacturers. just be aware it doesn't work the same on all monitors, so put in your research. for example one of the first monitors people got this working on was the original 144hz asus, but it fucks with the colors among other things, a monitor like the xl2411z or another benq has much more control over this feature.

anyone know how the AMEX $25 discount thing at Newegg works? is it an instant discount, or does the $25 get refunded to your card? wondering if it would work with an AMEX gift card...
>>
>>51573491
g-sync, like v-sync is better when you can't maintain a good FPS or have a lot of dips. if you can maintain a good FPS it's not that beneficial. plus to an extent you can reduce variance already by locking your FPS then disabling v-sync, which you can do with any graphics card and any monitor through software. you still get some tearing but it's acceptable and much better than v-sync (imo).
>>
>>51568163
No
>>
>>51568353
I really want this as a gift for my dad. All he would need is to be able to watch some Russia Today live stream on YouTube and the last cheapo Samsung tablet we got couldn't handle the Putin so is this actually somewhat powerful?

Probably going to go to Best Buy today anyway to see it in person.
>>
>>51568378
But it's not false advertising. Physically there are 4GB of ram on the card, it's just that 512MB of it is slower.
>>
>>51573688
On most games I get decent (80 on the low end) FPS at 1080, with SLI 980 ti's, but I'm not sure how I would do on another resolution.

If you had 700 bucks to spend what would you do in my situation?

2 1080's w g sync, 1440 or 4k w g sync, or get a ULMB or two?

>buying a prebuilt desk
You wouldn't buy a prebuilt PC, right? So why would you buy a prebuilt desk? Just make your own, basic tools and lumber aren't expensive, and if you can handle putting a PC together there's no reason you shouldn't be able to cut a few 2x4s and nail them together.

>letting yourself get dehydrated just so you won't ruin your beautiful laminate desk
>>
>>51569278
>consoles
>1080p 60fps
lol no, not even close. Most games struggle to run at 30fps.
>>
>>51573791
I would get 1440 with g-sync. you should be able to maintain above 60 on most games and the g-sync will make the variance better. there is no point getting multiple gaming-oriented monitors unless you plan to span them during gaming. 144hz and ulmb are nice but they're mostly beneficial to fast-paced competitive FPS like CS or quake, so if you don't play a lot of those kinds of games higher resolution and/or IPS would be more beneficial. if you can get an IPS that has g-sync and is above 1080p get that. if you have to sacrifice resolution for IPS I would.
