>Windows Central is reporting “from multiple sources” that Project Astoria is now on hold indefinitely, and “may even be shelved completely.” For its part, Microsoft hasn’t said much about Astoria recently, and one source told the site that “the Android app porting is not going as planned.” It also looks like Windows 10 Build 10586 has the Android subsystem removed completely.

I knew it was bullshit when I first heard about it.

I feel like running android applications on Windows phone would be a bad idea anyways. One of the strengths of Windows phone is that the applications that are made natively for it are really nice. I would be worried that android applications on Windows phone would destroy the unique design language that Windows phone has. Besides the hardware, why would I buy a Windows phone when I can just run Android on an android phone natively?

>tfw lagdoid even lags as a subsystem

I just wish they were maintained.

Windows should do it owns thing. They have the manpower and industry prowess to work with major app developers to port over the most used apps to Windows platforms so they run natively.

What I would really like is for Windows to develop their own alternative to these popular apps and fuck up the shitty Android ecosystem for good. I hate Android so much, it is a fucking nightmare on mobile devices.
>>
>>51424615
>android = bad even though they have all the users and apps
>windows = good even though they have no apps
Your post only makes sense if you bought a windows phone and are now regretting it.
>>
>>51424554
>>Android is bad
It is tho. Literally a botnet.
>>
>>51424670
And Windows/Cortana is not the same how?
>>
>>51424668
I was given an android phone and I am regretting it. I am saving money to get a decent Windows phone now that I have Win10 on my laptop. I want to see how they harmonize with each other. All I need is some apps to support my lifestyle.
>>
>>51424554
I don't use Windows phone. I'm just saying that when I think of upsides of Windows phones, I think of the nice native applications it has. I'm not denying that windows phone definitely is in desperate need of apps. I just think this isn't the right way of going about it.

WP dev here...

IMO, that was a failed attempt... to think you could run android as a subsystem inside a hyper-v machine on a phone, and not have it lag to hell and back... that was ridiculous.

I do fin the fact that they brought hyper-v over to phones fascinating. Let's wait for a x86 based windows phone, and run some funny OSes on our phones. Could be fun.

Also, the approach to iOS app porting is much nicer.

I'm glad this is dead and shelved.
>>
>>51424739
What's so bad about it?
>>
>>51424747
Too small, the file manager is retarded, can't run my NDS emulator without shitting itself and still hasn't gotten lollipop update notification. I am stuck at KitKat.
>>
>>51424741
>Let's wait for a x86 based windows phone, and run some funny OSes on our phones. Could be fun.
I'm still waiting for a phone that runs a normal desktop OS like windows without emulation (and the driver/performance problems attached to it)
>>
>>51424761
You seem to be running a custom rom on it. Pretty sure you have to manually flash a lollipop rom.
Also you could always install a good file manager
>>
>>51424741
>, and not have it lag to hell and back...
And how did blackberry do it?
They also run android apps on their OS, but without lag, on 2 years old hardware.
>>
>>51424766
Rumors say MS is investigating into Win32 app support for Continuum enabled phones.

It could be as close as possible to what you consider a normal desktop OS on a phone. I'm really waiting to see someone put some mobile intel CPU into a phone and let it run whatever the user wants.
>>
>>51424817
>I'm really waiting to see someone put some mobile intel CPU into a phone
Well, there are phones like the Zenfone
Only problems are the bootloader and display driver
>>
>>51424811
The have a middle layer between the app and BB OS, the don't have Android running as a subsystem inside a virtual machine.

Also...

>without lag

Lol bait/10 bud, nicely memed desu senpai
>>
>>51424817
Jesus Christ people stop over hyping mobile Intel CPUs so much. Without a huge ass cooler they can't even run a 8 years old OS without lag
>>
>>51424942
>What is a zenfone?
>>
>>51424554
>>>51424538>Android is bad
well it is. it literary corrodes and makes unusable every hardware it touches. Just had cousin around last week with LG G3. My mothers L630 way way way smoother when launching apps and scrolling then that.
IT is so bad that they had to remove it from the win 10 mobile because it ruined the performance of the OS
>>
Damn, good thing I sold my shitty Lumia 830

The Nexus 5 is a better phone

Probably better to get ports from iOS than ports (or emulated "ports") from Android.

Somebody else has to take their place. Microshaft obviously couldn't hack it. Maybe sailfish os or oxygen os could take its place.

>>51424498
I've read this earlier. They had two problems with Android support as I recall.

One is that Android allows some system functions to be vendor definable; they use different services per vendor. If MS emulates that, they have to emulate all different vendor specific functions too (for apps that check this), which is impossible on the long run.

The other is that it would essentially kill all Windows Mobile app development, since everyone could just write for Android, as WP can emulate it. That would seriously piss off the little developer base they have.

I think they can still get IOS apps to work, though. Or was that just "we made it super cheap for you to recompile your IOS apps for WP"? I forgot.
>>
>>51426633
>Now comes the time for eternal slumber.

That is not dead which can eternal lie,
And with strange aeons even death may die.
>>
>>51426792
Nah, WP can do it. With Microsoft backing it with it's cash it can happen. The question is how much will the shareholders allow to be spent on it?
>>
>>51424739
Lol that phone sucks. I had so many returned under warranty from faulty boards. Son many others I know had the same problem. First and last samkek device.

Who's idea was that?
>>
>no apps

Stock a fork in it, Windows phone... Oops I mean Windows 10 Mobile... is dead.

Android app compatibility was a bait and switch to trick users into buying into the platform.

Glad I switched back to Android
