Is X201 Tablet worth for amateur painting assuming I've never done this before? I've watched few videos and noticed quite a bit of lag. Also, one video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVAl9eu6Jlk) states that pressure curve is a bit fucked up as well.

I have two options I'm considering atm, a X220 with i5-2540M and a T440 with i5-4300U and I'm a bit undecided on which one to pick.

From what I've read the X220 would have a better keyboard and I think I'd like the smaller formfactor better.

Then again the T440 would come with newer hardware (and shittier kb).

Both machines have SSDs in them and the X220 is obviously cheaper. Is there really any difference between the hardware if I'm going to only use it for school stuff and browsing?

Just got a T410 with a broken right mouse click (the upper one).This is the best thinkpad I could get in my country, there was a T420 but it was sold fast.

How it compares to the T420? Same thing except the cpu?

Can only seem to find T420's for around about the £100+ mark. Is that about right?

It's a simple matter, do you move a lot with the computer? Get the X220, otherwise the T440 has a bigger screen which can be useful if you research a lot.

Hardware won't matter much, I'm doing way fine on a T410, just decide over portability vs. screen size.

I need the pre **1/*10 with the longest battery life. I know the **20 and beyond have really good batteries, but I'm seriously budget restricted now.

Gaming the system

This is exactly what my company did with me. They gave us $2,000 to buy a computer for work, I bought fully loaded T540p, sold it as soon as it arrived, and then used the money to buy an old X201 since that's all I really needed.

I have a chance at getting an X1 Carbon Gen 3. Is it any good? Price isn't too high yet either but I am still swaying whether to bid or not

any drawbacks to getting the tablet version of the x220? (durability?)

New x61 owner here. Can anyone recommend a tray to use with my Thinkpad?

Cooling pads have failed me in the past. I just want to be a fatass NEET and lay in bed with my Thinkpad sitting over me.

New to Thinkpads, what's the cheapest I can get a new battery for my X60 and where can I get it? It doesn't hold a charge anymore. Other than the battery this is pretty much the best 25$ purchase I've ever made. It runs faster than a 400$ craptop made today, looks better, is more durable and more expandable. have tried to carry it and use it around the house to see how it would fare during university

concluding currently that it would be okay but a chromebook would be better. the battery life is usable at best even with a new genuine 6 cell. the weight is okay and about as heavy as you'd ever want your laptop to be. the keyboard is alright, even if the keys are worn. I don't think that it's the greatest thing ever. The older keyboards on say the 61 and 60 series are much better. The trackpad is 100% useless because it's so awful. The trackpoint is nice but using a bluetooth mouse would still be much better.

currently getting 4 hour at 73% battery life at half brightness and wifi on with a couple of tabs open.

I'm still not sure if this is a meme or if it's actually worth the money, but I have a few more days to decide whether or not to return it.

I get all of that, but you can only upgrade this thing so much until it doesn't really matter anymore. Unless you will need 16GB RAM in the future, the RAM upgrade-ability is useless. Unless you really want to spend an ass-load on a i7 that will get like 500 points on passmark higher than the 2520 that is in this... You can put three internal drives in this, which is nice. The screen is a nice size and resolution. They keyboard is okay, but even compared to that CB3 chromebook, it's not mindblowing. The trackpad is a typical thinkpad trackpad/total garbage.

The whole upgrade-ability of these 5 year old thinkpads is a bit of a bullshit argument, IMO. You're going to have to pay for those upgrades, anyway so who cares anyway? The keyboard is tactile and such, but I don't feel like I type faster on it or anything. It just feels different. This isn't my first thinkpad. my boarding school used thinkpads exclusively and I used one for actual work for years. The performance to price is the only pro I can see when you compare this to a chromebook/cheap new laptop. It's durable, yeah, but if you take care of what you own, you don't really have to worry about that too much.

theres no native ethernet on the machine. the machine does not have usb 2 natively either, but i have installed a usb 2.0 card, and also have a usb 2.0 -> 10/100 ethernet adapter. at any rate, to do an ethernet install, i still think id need to boot off a floppy

Another option would be booting up some 2006 version of Debian and then doing dist-upgrades through every generation.

How is the T430 compared to the T420s? The keyboard on the T420s definitely seems like it'd be nicer but the faster processor and graphics card on the T430 also seems favorable. I'm just going to be using this laptop for general computer and programming.

Ive been mostly installing to a CF card on a T43p, then swapping the card into an IDE-> CF adapter in the 240x. I have however also tried an IDE HD in the 240X. But all actual installs take place on the T43p, and are confirmed functional

The weight difference isn't that noticeable, especially if you switch the optical drive with a bay battery for extended battery life.

As mentioned before, the switching graphics are a pain to handle, especially if you want some battery life from it without just completely deactivating the dedicated graphics.

WiFi can be spotty in GNU/Linux, but that may have changed in recent updates.

Nevertheless, it is still a good machine.

Utter shit anon here. My sole experience with the x120e is from when my school had them. Single core atom and windows 7 lagged on the simplest thing. Even after I convinced the staff to let me debloat it. It was actually my first thinkpad line experience, leading me to believe that they were all utter shit, but then again, I was a macfag. I have that problem too. Its pretty damn tough to find a good old linux distro to work on that machine, I am having more of a problem of chrome not downloading it fully, something corrupts it in the end.

Anyways, I've been using a lot of different distros loading onto my A31p but to no avail.
My A22 doesn't want to load a DVD, and I don't have any CD drives, shit sucks.

I had waited over a year to find one, one popped up on eBay, I expected fierce bidding competition, no one else seemed interested, I ended up making an offer at the last minute for like $41 shipped and the seller accepted. The battery is bulging, but other than that everything about it seems fine

Just sent back my T420 for an X201 (40 dollars less). T420 wasn't bad but I couldn't fit it in my backpack. Thank god for free to-and-return shipping. Really hoping this one has a solid battery.
Anyway I tried installing Debian on it and I kept getting the shitty CD-ROM not detected error when using USB. I couldn't find where the flash drive was in /dev/, thought it was /sdb/ but that didn't work. Anyone have advice for when I try again?

I've got an X130e, one of the Intel models. Honestly, I like it a lot. It's sturdy, fast, quiet, has great audio quality which astonished me in such a low-end model, and the keyboard is slightly nicer than on more proper modern Thinkpads due to a lack of backlighting.

It looks like a huge piece of shit with the curved design and the screen is one of the worst things I've ever laid eyes on, but for a cheap little machine I'm surprisingly happy with it.

if you go too low, the installer would run slower. going too high just (I think) makes it take up a little more space. 4M is basically the largest block size commonly used and so it will safely ensure your install will not be slowed down by using too small of a block size

Win7 or Win8.1 on an x230t?

I'm in the market for a x220-ish device but after looking at comparable elitebooks i noticed theyre way cheaper.
Is this because of the thinkpad meme or am i missing something that makes the x220 superior? (apart from the keyboard maybe)

So I got a Thinkpad. It's my first laptop, so my first linux install on a mobile device.

I'm running Manjaro and the battery life sucks, I hardly get half the amount I got under the Windows 7 install that came with the computer.

What can I do to optmize that, other than installing TLP?

Any 15" T-series since the T61 has resolution options up to 1920x1200 (reduced to 1920x1080 from the T510 and on). T510 is probably the easiest to come by, since it's not quite as powerful as a T520 and it's also not 16:10 like the older models, leaving it somewhat undesirable and cheap as a result. I have one though and it's still a great machine in its own right. I'm particularly impressed by the cooling, even my T60 modded with a T500 fan running on the top setting can't match these temps.

So I think the internal microphone on my T420 is fucked. The microphone mute button doesn't work (doesn't light up and doesn't mute mic), and when I talk the recipient simply hears muffled distortion not unlike demons speaking in tongues. I think you can use another internal HDD with the docking station, but other than that you really don't have any options. X series doesn't have Ultrabay, just the one SATA bay and the mSATA slot if you don't have a WWAN card. Also worth noting is that the SATA bay is only 7mm high, so you can't put a standard 9.5mm HDD in there. Or at least you can't if you want to be able to get it out again.

I do love Linux but somehow my Thinkpad's W541 graphic cards doesn't. Nvidias Quadro K2100M drives me crazy.
I really want to use I3 as the Window Manager. So it can be nearly any distro.
What do you think, which one should I go for? I always have problems with nouveau. I tried many distros by now..

I like the idea of a rugged functional laptop with nice keyboard to supplement my desktop which I don't use so much these days.

But if these threads are based on the fact American businesses love them and flood the market with cheap 2nd hand thinkpads then maybe I should just pick up a cheaper "regular" laptop.

So I installed Windows 10 on a T61 and it run perfectly fine. However it started having annoying quirks:
