Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
No news.
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Is X201 Tablet worth for amateur painting assuming I've never done this before? I've watched few videos and noticed quite a bit of lag. Also, one video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVAl9eu6Jlk) states that pressure curve is a bit fucked up as well.

Mine on x220
>>
I have two options I'm considering atm, a X220 with i5-2540M and a T440 with i5-4300U and I'm a bit undecided on which one to pick.

From what I've read the X220 would have a better keyboard and I think I'd like the smaller formfactor better.

Then again the T440 would come with newer hardware (and shittier kb).

Both machines have SSDs in them and the X220 is obviously cheaper. Is there really any difference between the hardware if I'm going to only use it for school stuff and browsing?
>>
>>51418888
Does /tpg/ have multiples of a single model or do you anons prefer getting different models each time

Just got a T410 with a broken right mouse click (the upper one). This is the best thinkpad I could get in my country, there was a T420 but it was sold fast.

How it compares to the T420? Same thing except the cpu?
>>
Can only seem to find T420's for around about the £100+ mark. Is that about right?

Anyone buy a refurb from newegg? Can i get a recommendation on a seller?

>>
>>51419872
Sorry mate I don't know but can someone clarify if those refurbished computers are just used ones that are retouched aesthetically and sold for a lot? I don't know but sounds to me like that could be the case.
>>
>>51419940

It's a simple matter, do you move a lot with the computer? Get the X220, otherwise the T440 has a bigger screen which can be useful if you research a lot.

Hardware won't matter much, I'm doing way fine on a T410, just decide over portability vs. screen size.
>>
I need the pre **1/*10 with the longest battery life. I know the **20 and beyond have really good batteries, but I'm seriously budget restricted now.

I just need it for basic usage, so I'd probably be fine with a P4M model.
>>
I was posting in the previous thread, but I'm not gonna make you go back to read it. To summarise:

>University gives us £3000 in store credit, £500 each semester
>Their stock is varied enough
>I can get a Thinkpad, a HP Probook or a Macbook

I am onky asking because there seems to be a few Thinkpads that are not "proper" Thinkpads. Can you help?
I am willing to try the Macbook Pro as I only know Premiere and would like to learn FinalCunt, however I could just learn at the Uni Macs.

Any thoughts?
>>
>>51419867
Yeah, 120-200 depending on condition and specs is normal
>>
>>51420008
Thanks mate, I'll probably go with the X220 in that case.
>>
i can pick up a x60 model for 40$ mint condition. t5600/2gb. Can i upgrade it somehow? What's the best cpu i can get for it? and max ram?

>Buy W520 off eBay for $500
>Sell Macbook
>You are now $2500 richer

Gaming the system

This is exactly what my company did with me. They gave us $2,000 to buy a computer for work, I bought fully loaded T540p, sold it as soon as it arrived, and then used the money to buy an old X201 since that's all I really needed.

New to Thinkpads, what's the cheapest I can get a new battery for my X60 and where can I get it? It doesn't hold a charge anymore. Other than the battery this is pretty much the best 25$ purchase I've ever made. It runs faster than a 400$ craptop made today, looks better, is more durable and more expandable. Does everything I need a general computer to do.

day 2 with t420

smell has gone away about 95%

have tried to carry it and use it around the house to see how it would fare during university

concluding currently that it would be okay but a chromebook would be better. the battery life is usable at best even with a new genuine 6 cell. the weight is okay and about as heavy as you'd ever want your laptop to be. the keyboard is alright, even if the keys are worn. I don't think that it's the greatest thing ever. The older keyboards on say the 61 and 60 series are much better. The trackpad is 100% useless because it's so awful. The trackpoint is nice but using a bluetooth mouse would still be much better.

currently getting 4 hour at 73% battery life at half brightness and wifi on with a couple of tabs open.

I'm still not sure if this is a meme or if it's actually worth the money, but I have a few more days to decide whether or not to return it.
>>
>>51425004
1 hour per cell is reasonable battery life.
If you don't value the performance and upgradeability of the 420 over the lower weight of the Chromebook then just go with your preference.
>>
>>51425103
I get all of that, but you can only upgrade this thing so much until it doesn't really matter anymore. Unless you will need 16GB RAM in the future, the RAM upgrade-ability is useless. Unless you really want to spend an ass-load on a i7 that will get like 500 points on passmark higher than the 2520 that is in this... You can put three internal drives in this, which is nice. The screen is a nice size and resolution. They keyboard is okay, but even compared to that CB3 chromebook, it's not mindblowing. The trackpad is a typical thinkpad trackpad/total garbage.

The whole upgrade-ability of these 5 year old thinkpads is a bit of a bullshit argument, IMO. You're going to have to pay for those upgrades, anyway so who cares anyway? The keyboard is tactile and such, but I don't feel like I type faster on it or anything. It just feels different. This isn't my first thinkpad. my boarding school used thinkpads exclusively and I used one for actual work for years. The performance to price is the only pro I can see when you compare this to a chromebook/cheap new laptop. It's durable, yeah, but if you take care of what you own, you don't really have to worry about that too much.
>>
>>51424157
EBay or Amazon if they have them. Get a new Chinaman battery, they're *almost* as good as the real thing.

Alternatively if you're good at DIY you could just order some new 18650 cells and rebuild your existing battery.

more info:

Ive been mostly installing to a CF card on a T43p, then swapping the card into an IDE-> CF adapter in the 240x. I have however also tried an IDE HD in the 240X. But all actual installs take place on the T43p, and are confirmed functional

>pic is X200s vs 240X
>>
>>51427937
USB 3.0 is also essential for me so that's also why I thought the T420s would be preferable to the T420.
>>
>>51427992
Not >>51427982 but owner of a T420s (bought new when it came out).

The weight difference isn't that noticeable, especially if you switch the optical drive with a bay battery for extended battery life.

As mentioned before, the switching graphics are a pain to handle, especially if you want some battery life from it without just completely deactivating the dedicated graphics.

WiFi can be spotty in GNU/Linux, but that may have changed in recent updates.

Nevertheless, it is still a good machine.
>>
>>51428048
Oh yeah, USB 3.0, the included SSD and USB charging while turned off were the convenience features of the T420s that weren't default on the T420.
>>
>>51428089
Yeah, I think I'm going to go with the T420s. I found someone selling one with an extra battery in the optical drive slot which I assume would make up for the crappy battery life anyway.
>>
>>51428089
>USB charging while turned off
That's standard on the 420 rear usb port as well.
>>
>>51428112
The batteries certainly don't age well with daily use, but with the Utrabay battery and some power management you should be able to get some battery life from it.

Also, the Ultrabay batteries can be hot-swapped.
>>
>>51427644
Could anyone comment on the T430 and T430s as well? The difference in price between the XX30 models and the T420s I'm looking at is minimal, but the only think holding me back from going with the XX30 series is the chiclet style keyboard.

>>51420617
If you've never used a ThinkPad before, getting a current or late gen model does not matter. The keyboards layout and build is not dogshit like how everyone exaggerates.

Honestly it just depends on processor, battery life, hard drive and screen. Are there display models to try out or is it just a box you get?

>>51421547
Eh... paid $900 but I ended up liking the $200 T430 a lot more. It's a fancy schmancy computer, but I feel its a bit too think for my sort of behaviors and not as potent.
With that said I liked the Chromebook Pixel a lot, only wish it had a TrackPoint to be the perfect laptop in a sense.

Battery lasts me I think 8 hours.

I have that problem too. Its pretty damn tough to find a good old linux distro to work on that machine, I am having more of a problem of chrome not downloading it fully, something corrupts it in the end.

Anyways, I've been using a lot of different distros loading onto my A31p but to no avail.
My A22 doesn't want to load a DVD, and I don't have any CD drives, shit sucks.

I had waited over a year to find one, one popped up on eBay, I expected fierce bidding competition, no one else seemed interested, I ended up making an offer at the last minute for like $41 shipped and the seller accepted. The battery is bulging, but other than that everything about it seems fine

I would occasionally look for one every few months, I had the eBay app on my phone but since they switched to the newer GUI, its a bitch to even bother my followed searches.

I've got an X130e, one of the Intel models. Honestly, I like it a lot. It's sturdy, fast, quiet, has great audio quality which astonished me in such a low-end model, and the keyboard is slightly nicer than on more proper modern Thinkpads due to a lack of backlighting.

It looks like a huge piece of shit with the curved design and the screen is one of the worst things I've ever laid eyes on, but for a cheap little machine I'm surprisingly happy with it.

for usb installers, its good to just always use 4M

if you go too low, the installer would run slower. going too high just (I think) makes it take up a little more space. 4M is basically the largest block size commonly used and so it will safely ensure your install will not be slowed down by using too small of a block size

Any 15" T-series since the T61 has resolution options up to 1920x1200 (reduced to 1920x1080 from the T510 and on). T510 is probably the easiest to come by, since it's not quite as powerful as a T520 and it's also not 16:10 like the older models, leaving it somewhat undesirable and cheap as a result. I have one though and it's still a great machine in its own right. I'm particularly impressed by the cooling, even my T60 modded with a T500 fan running on the top setting can't match these temps.

Are you playing 1080p60 stuff and using Firefox? Try Chrome, which should be half the CPU usage. Also update your video drivers if they are older than 2014. Besides that, Thinkpads generally do run a bit hot because they prioritize noise.

You might as well buy a mac at that point. Classic macs are more upgradable than modern thinkpads.

mSATA SSD + HDD in the main bay
>>
>>51449954
I have a normal SSD in the main bay right now. Can't I use both this and my other HDD or am I forced to use an external hard drive if I want more space?
>>
>>51450474
I think you can use another internal HDD with the docking station, but other than that you really don't have any options. X series doesn't have Ultrabay, just the one SATA bay and the mSATA slot if you don't have a WWAN card. Also worth noting is that the SATA bay is only 7mm high, so you can't put a standard 9.5mm HDD in there. Or at least you can't if you want to be able to get it out again.

please help me finding the right distrobution (graphic card related problems)
I do love Linux but somehow my Thinkpad's W541 graphic cards doesn't. Nvidias Quadro K2100M drives me crazy.
I really want to use I3 as the Window Manager. So it can be nearly any distro.
What do you think, which one should I go for? I always have problems with nouveau. I tried many distros by now..
Help really appreciated.

Is this ThinkPad love an American thing? Are they not so ubiquitous and value for money here in Europe / the UK?

I like the idea of a rugged functional laptop with nice keyboard to supplement my desktop which I don't use so much these days.

But if these threads are based on the fact American businesses love them and flood the market with cheap 2nd hand thinkpads then maybe I should just pick up a cheaper "regular" laptop.

At the moment I use a netbook with Xubuntu on.
>>
>>51453823
Britbong here, I always see good deals on T420's and X220's on ebay, so I don't think it's purely an american thing. Heck, several lecturers at my university carry around old Thinkpad's
>>
>>51453758
Try openSUSE, it's the only one that's modernenough and plays nice with my gtx980. It even runs the lastest and greatest driver on Linux (352.63), since you can download the actual official drivers from the nvidia website.
>>
>>51454011

Sweet I'll look into it.

Gotta beat this shitty netbook (though it is small)
>>
>>51453823
Europoor from Denmark here, I generally don't see prices as low as people show off in these threads either.

But used/refurbished Thinkpads never seem to be more expensive than equally specced consumer laptops either, so there's that.
>>

Now all I need is an external GPU and some way to ramp up the cooling in this baby. I wonder how cheaply I could get a replacement chassis

So I installed Windows 10 on a T61 and it run perfectly fine. However it started having annoying quirks:

>WLAN wouldn't connect after waking up from sleep, requiring either resetting the WLAN module or troubleshooting the connection
>touchpad somehow launched Cortana when dragging from the right edge towards the center
>died on 90% battery

I looked on the Lenovo website and apparently the T61 is not officially supported for W10. Is W10 ever going to come to these aging machines? Meanwhile I went back to W7.
>>
>>51455152
I suspect most of these are driver issues. However there seem to be no drivers for W10 on this machine

The tablet version of the x230 already has a new keyboard, thinklight and a fingerprint reader, and the difference between a 3320m and a 3520m is miniscule.

ive had mine for 2 years so the keyboard isnt so new

it does not have a thinklight, and mine didnt have the reader either

what do you all think of the dell Chromebook 13? I'm thinking about getting the i3 8gb, swapping out the ssd and throwing Debian on it.
>>
>>51453462
I loved he X230 when I used it, similar to the X220's frame, except chicklet and not accepting third party batteries
I haven't tried the X240, but they changed it to a slimmer chassis and of course no track point, but it had two batteries I think

Thie x131e models are Linux compliant and have either an i3 or AMD CPU. If you are not autistic about keyboards, looks like a decent couch PC.

Not up to primary latpop quality, but seems like a decent 2nd portable with the battery life they have.

there is also this thing called "Lenovo PC Experience" on my taskbar, pic related, that cannot be removed
nothing comes up when i right click it and I cannot uninstall it
also how should i clean the outside casing and the hinges (fingerprint magnets)
